Background
The American Heart Association has recommended tail-cuff blood pressure
measurement for high-throughput experimental designs, including
mutagenesis screens and genetic crosses. However, some tail-cuff methods
show good agreement with radiotelemetry and others do not, indicating that
each tail-cuff method requires independent validation.
Methods
We validated the volumepressure recording (VPR) tail-cuff method by
comparison to simultaneous radiotelemetry measurements.
Results
BlandAltman analysis of 560 cycles from 26 independent measurement
sessions showed good agreement between VPR and radiotelemetry
measurements, with tail-cuff measurements being 0.25 mm Hg lower than
telemetry measurements on average. However, the VPR method was less
accurate, compared to radiotelemetry, at extreme high and low (i.e., <110 or
>180 mm Hg) systolic blood pressures (SBPs).
Conclusions
We conclude that the VPR tail-cuff method provides accurate blood pressure
measurements over the physiological range of blood pressure in mice.

Pressure controlled ventilators deliver a constant ow of inspiratory gas at the onset of the inspiration

Pressure in the airways and lungs are now maintained until the end of the inspiratory cycle. At this time,

Blood Collection
A variety of blood collection tubes and methods are available for you to choose from. The Microvette
CB300 is optimal for serum/plasma recovery. Our line of S-Monovette offers you a closed blood
collection system that allows the user to collect blood according to the individual animal or the
condition of access using either the aspiration or the vacuum principle. The Microvette 100/200 is a
simple and easy capillary blood collection system. You have a choice of either conical (ideal for bar
coding or labeling) or round bottom inner tube (optimum mixing results). The prepared micro tubes
provide the researcher with secure transport and storage.
Surgical Instruments
Ideal for small animal lab instrument decontamination
Compact hot bead dry sterilizer provides an easy way to sterilize your surgical
instruments in an effective and efcient manner. The middle of the unit is
loaded with dry glass beads that are heated to 260C. All you need to do is
insert the instrument into the beads, wait 15 seconds, and the portion of the
instrument in the beads is sterilized.

Animal Warming
Uses tap water for added convenience
Mercury free system decreases potential hazards
The HTP-1500 heat therapy pump allows you to safely warm your
animals. This is one of the most accurate localized heat therapy
system available. Its bright and easy-to-read display provides
continuous real-time temperature readings. The digital controller uses
proprietary software to manage your prescribed set-point temperature
to within one-degree Fahrenheit (1.0F). Three temperature safety
limits guard against the possibility of overheating and the Hi Limit
Switches can be tested without taking the unit apart! Use with MRI
compatible pads and blankets on page 40.

Micro-Temp LT
Self-calibrating, microprocessor control eliminates need
for costly manual calibration
The self-calibrating Micro-Temp LT heat therapy system provides
the consistent delivery of therapeutic heat through compatible heat
therapy pads. A variety of safety features are incorporated into the
Micro-Temp LT. These features include audible and visual alarms for
animal protection. Additional protection includes an audible and visual
alarm if temperature exceeds 1C over set point, ideal for small animal
applications. The new Micro-Temp LT will also shut down in the event
the system tips over or when the water level is too low. Use with MRI Pads and blankets available on page 40.

The RightTemp Homeothermic System provides you with an easy and accurate method to warm, monitor,
and control animal temperature. RightTemp uses Far InfraRed heat. The body can absorb as much as 90%
of Far InfraRed heat compared to only 20% with conventional techniques. Far InfraRed allows researchers
to safely warm animals for a longer period of time without unknowingly overheating the animal.
The controller displays both the animals temperature and the set temperature. You have the ability to
program high and low indicators to maintain the temperature at a therapeutic level. The set temperature is
always displayed on screen. You can choose either
centigrade or farenheit readings. Ordering Information

MANTELLO
Ambulatory Surgical Warmer
The MANTELLO Ambulatory Surgical
Warmer provides a safe and effective way
to warm your animals during and after

body metabolism thereby discharging
anesthetics and toxins, which aid in
faster recovery from surgery. The

Temporary Identication
A felt tip marker can mark the ear or tail for several days. Dyes may be used to color a patch of fur; which
will generally last several weeks, however restricted to albino and light colored animals. Another method
is to shave a patch of fur on the back or side of the animal.
Permanent Identication
Methods for permanently identifying rodents include ear punching, ear tagging, tattooing, and
subcutaneously implanting a numerically coded transponder microchip.
Animal Identification
Self-piercing and self-locking tags are used in research and laboratory
animals, such as rats, mice, and other small animals. The tags are
silver in color and made of a monel, nickel-copper alloy with excellent
corrosion resistance, strength, and ductility.
Laser etched characters provide optimal visibility. Black lettering
is etched directly on the tag. Random sequences of a hundred
consecutive tags are available for immediate shipment.

Animal Handling
There are several different methods of animal handling.
It is important to note that improper handling causes
distress and/or pain. Minimal animal handling should be
the research objective. Different animals require specic
methods of handling.
Physical Restraint
Physical restraint is the use of manual or mechanical means to limit some or all of
an animals movements for the purpose of examination, collection of samples, drug
administration, therapy, and experimental manipulation. Animals are restrained for
brief periods, usually minutes, in most research applications. Restraint devices should
be suitable in size, design, and operation to minimize discomfort and injury to the
animal. Restraint devices are never permanent animal housing.
Prolonged restraint
If prolonged physical restraint is required, animals should be conditioned over a period
of gradually increasing time. Certain experiments require animal conditioning to
reduce the level of stress.
Note:
For the comfort and
proper fit. Animals in chairs and slings require closer monitoring than those restrained by tethering jackets or harnesses. A wide variety of animal
restraint devices is available in this section and on our website.

Paw volume measurements of inammation and edema studies are easily taken with the our
Plethysmometer. The acrylic table is designed to be stable using a 30 cm wide base. The extended 25 cm
top gives ample area for resting wrists to maintain stability while holding the subject. Three water
columns have a 1.3, 1.9 and 2.5 cm inner diameter for different paw sizes from mice to large rats. The
column rises 3.75 cm from the table top for easy insertion of the paw.
The water column is connected by tubing to a pre-calibrated low pressure transducer. The transducer
gives consistent readings regardless of the water level. The table and transducer are used with our
computer program for the easiest experimentation possible. The table can also be connected to a recorder
or other data collection system.
One of the best features of the PVP001-R Data Acquisition software is the hand and foot free operation.
No more trying to nd the keyboard or the foot pedal while holding an active animal. Simply dip the paw,
then the computer program automatically takes a base line reading just before the paw was dipped, hold
the paw steady for a few seconds and a second reading is automatically taken.
The volume signal and sample marks are displayed on a chart. Paw volume is automatically calculated
and displayed on digital meters. Acknowledgement of the reading after the dip is done by a simple
mouse click.

Provides an accurate and economical means for monitoring respiratory
signals and other low pressure systems. Available ranges are 2, 5,
20, 50cm water or custom ranges can be ordered. The transducers are
pre-calibrated and can be used with or without ampliers. Typical use is
with pneumotachometers, plethysmographs or airway pressure, etc.
TRN050 Blood Pressure Transducer
An extremely reliable, economical blood pressure transducer. It has ner specications and is much
more rugged than standard transducers. Its ow through design is easy to use and the solid state
construction provides excellent signal delity. Typical uses are for direct blood pressure, blood vessel
