Investigation of a Cube dipped in paint

If a cube of width, length, and height n is dipped into paint and then split into smaller
cubes each of width, length, and height 1unit then it will give n3 small cubes some of
which will have three painted faces, some of which will have two painted faces, some of
which will have one painted face, and some of which will have no painted faces.

Three Painted Faces

The cubes which have three painted faces are those which came from the corners of the
larger cube. Because a cube always has 8 corners, there will always be 8 cubes with three
painted faces.

Two Painted Faces

The cubes which have two painted faces are those that were situated along the edges of
the larger cube with the exception of those from the corners, which have three painted
faces.

Because each edge of the larger cube was n smaller cubes long, the number of cubes
along an edge with two painted faces can be given by n minus the two corner cubes.

Because a cube has 12 edges each of which contains n-2 cubes with two painted faces,
the total number of cubes with two painted faces can be given by 12(n-2)

One Painted Face

The cubes which have one painted face are those that were situated central to the faces of
the larger cube, excluding those around the edges.

Each face of the larger cube can be considered as a square containing n2 smaller cubes.

From above we know that each edge of the cube includes n-2 edge cubes plus two corner
cubes. Each face has four edges, however each corner cube is shared between two of
those edges and so the number of cubes around the edges of a face can be given by
4(n-2)+4

This means that each face of the larger cube includes n2-[4(n-2)+4)] or n2-4n-4 cubes with
one painted face. This is the same as (n-2)2

Because a cube has 6 faces, the total number of cubes with a single painted face is 4
times the number of cubes on each face with a single painted face. This can be given by
4(n-2)2
No Painted Faces

The cubes with painted faces are those situated on the outside faces of the original cube.
If these cubes were taken away, the remaining unpainted cubes would be left as a cube
with length, height, and width each two less than the original cube.

This means that the number of cubes with no painted faces can be given by (n-2)3

For an a x b x c cuboid

For a cuboid with sides a x b x c, the number of cubes with painted faces would chan
along with the lengths of the cuboids edges as follows.

Three Painted Faces

Since the Cuboid still has 8 corners, there will still be 8 cubes with three painted faces.

Two Painted Faces

The cuboid will contain 4 edges of each length; a, b, and c. The number of cubes along
each edge with two painted faces will be equal to the length of the edge excluding the
corner cubes.

Therefore the number of cubes with two painted faces is equal to 4(a-2)+4(b-2)+4(c-2) or
4a-8+4b-8+4c-8

Giving 4a+4b+4c-24

One Painted Face

The number of cubes on each face with a single painted face is equal to a square with
length and width two shorter than the length and width of that face as with the nxnxn
cube above, except that now there are two faces of dimensions a x b, tow faces of a x c
and two faces of b x c.

The total cubes with a single painted face is therefore given by

2(a-2)(b-2)+2(b-2)(c-2)+2(a-2)(c-2)
Or

2(ab+bc+ac)-8(a+b+c)-12

No Painted Faces

The number of cubes with no painted faces remain those of an inner cuboid with the outer
painted cubes removed, which is (a-2)(b-2)(c-2)
