3. LIGHTING
1 INTRODUCTION
Lighting on the DHC-6 Twin Otter series 300 is used to illuminate the cockpit area and all flight
instruments. The majority of the instruments are internally lighted. For general illumination a dome
light is used, and a utility light is conveniently located for both the pilot and copilot positions.
Standard passenger illuminated warning signs are available for the cabin area, and emergency
lights are available to illuminate the exits if required. Various standard and optional lights illuminate
the exterior.
2 GENERAL
Airplane lighting is divided into interior and exterior lighting. Interior lighting is further divided into
cockpit, cabin, and emergency lighting. Cockpit lighting consists of instrument panel lights, flight
instrument lights, overhead console lights, utility lights, and a dome light. Cabin lighting consists of
general cabin lights, passenger reading lights, entrance lights, passenger warning signs,
emergency lights, and baggage compartment lights. Exterior lighting consists of position lights,
landing lights, anti-collision strobe and rotating beacon lights, taxi light, wing inspection lights, and
optional logo lights.
3 INTERIOR LIGHTING
The interior lighting consists of six general cabin lights, two cockpit utility lights, a cockpit dome
light, passenger reading lights, an entrance light, forward and aft baggage compartment lights, and
cabin sign lights. An airstair door light on the fuselage exterior is in circuit with the entrance light.
3.1.3Panel Lighting
White panel lighting is provided for the flight instruments
and engine instrument panels, trim controls, overhead
console, emergency panel, and DC meter panel. Post
lights illuminate the flight instrument panel. Edge lights
illuminate the engine instrument panel, overhead console,
emergency panel, trim controls, DC meter panel, and flap
indicator. The hydraulic pressure gages are illuminated by
eyebrow lights. An example of general panel lighting is Figure 3-3-2. Cockpit Dome
shown in Figure 3-3-3. Light
3.2.1Cabin Signs
Two cabin signs (Figure 3-3-6) inscribed "NO SMOKING"
and "FASTEN SEAT BELTS" are installed in the cabin to
the right of the cabin/flight compartment doorway. Lights
controlled by NO SMOKING and FASTEN BELT switches
located on the overhead console illuminate them. The
circuits are powered from the right DC bus through the
FLT COMP LT circuit breaker located on the main circuit
breaker panel.
3.2.4Entrance Lights
The entrance lights consist of a threshold floodlight
recessed in the cabin roof and an airstair door
floodlight located on the fuselage exterior forward of
the door. The lights are controlled with either of two
switches: the ENTRANCE switch (Figure 3-3-9)
located on the overhead console and the
BOARDING LIGHTS rocker switch located on the
woodwork immediately forward of the door. The
entrance lights circuit is powered from the battery
bus through the COMPT LTS circuit breaker located
on the rear bulkhead circuit-breaker panel.
4 EXTERIOR LIGHTING
The exterior lighting system consists of position lights, landing lights, and an anticollision light;
wiring is installed for the addition of a special order taxi light and wing inspection lights. A lower
anticollision light and strobe lights can also be installed by special order. All exterior lights are
powered from the left or right DC buses. Exterior lighting locations are shown in figure 3-4-1.
With BEACON switch located on the overhead console. Beacon light power is from the left DC bus
through the BEACON LT circuit breaker located on the overhead circuit-breaker panel. By special
order a lower-rotating ant collision beacon light is mounted on the underside of the rear fuselage.
The same BEACON switch on the overhead console controls it. Power for the lower light is routed
from the right DC bus through the ANTI COLL LT LOWER circuit breaker located on the overhead
circuit-breaker panel. On earlier airplanes, without strobe lights, the rotating beacon light is
controlled with the ANTI COLL switch located on the overhead console.
Optional logo lights may be installed on the upper surfaces of the horizontal stabilizers. These
lights are designed to illuminate the sides of the vertical stabilizer. The control switch is located on
the overhead console, and the light receive power from the right DC bus through the LOGO LTS
circuit breaker located on the main circuit breaker panel.
