Jamie Oliver and His Campaign

Name: Jamie Oliver
Nick name: The Naked Chef
Birthday: 27 May 1975
Place of birth: Essex, England
Occupation: Chef
Work: host of a series of broadcast reality shows on cooking

Jamie Oliver is known for advocating healthy diets for school kids. He has been campaigning to
ban junk food and to improve the quality and nutritional value of school lunches for students
across the United Kingdom since 2005.

He believes that food can affect ones mood, behaviour, health, growth and even the ability to
concentrate.

A lunchtime school meal should provide a growing child with at least one third of their daily nutritional
intake, he says.

To revolutionise the school meal system, he suggests that:

Schools should provide compulsory cooking classes for students so that they can learn more
about food and develop good eating habits.

Parents should have an understanding of the basics of family cooking and pay attention to
food nutrition while preparing meals.

Teenage Problems Forum

Published in 2005, the book Smashed: Story of a Drunken Girlhood recounts Koren Zailckas personal
experience as an underage alcoholic starting at the age of 14. She was drinking so much that at 16, she
had her stomach pumped in the emergency room, experienced countless blackouts and had practically
ruined her school life. Her memoir is brilliant yet terrifying, and it makes people aware of an
5 alarming issue teenage drinking.

Do you know any other teenage drinking stories, or have any comments to share with us? Please send
them to our website.

I think the entertainment and advertising industries have a lot to do with the increasing number of cases of
alcohol abuse amongst youngsters. There are often scenes on TV dramas and in films where actors and
actresses are indulging in alcohol. There are also advertisements which portray handsome men holding
alcoholic drinks with a cool and trendy image, surrounded by beautiful women. All these allure teenagers to
try drinking alcohol. If we are to do something to prevent teenage drinking, I think these advertisements
should be strictly monitored.

Research shows that alcohol causes more damage to the brain of maturing youngsters than was previously
thought. Evidence suggests that youngsters who drink a lot have a weaker memory than those who dont.
The younger the drinkers, the greater the damage alcohol does to their brain. It is horrible!

I am 18 and I have to say I drink every weekend. I dont see the problem with it. The overwhelming pressure
from school, family and part-time work drive me crazy. Every time I feel stressed, I drink. When I get drunk,
I can get away from reality at least for a while. Usually I cant recall what I do when Im drunk, but its no
big deal.

My son became an alcoholic when he turned 17. It was his peers at school that gave him the first sip. It
didnt take very long before he got addicted to it and even started drinking in broad daylight. He skipped
school and got arrested for fighting (when he was drunk). My husband and I were very worried. Luckily, a
friend of mine, who was a family counsellor, advised us to sit and explain the danger of excessive drinking
to our son, in a calm and positive manner. We did as he said and things gradually got better. Family support
is really crucial in helping kids rid them of their bad habits.

I dont think alcohol abuse among teenagers is a problem in Hong Kong, but I do know a few people my age
who have problem with drinking. They take in quite a lot of alcohol when they go clubbing, and often end
up doing weird things in the street. Because they stay out so late at night, they are always tired. As a result,
they perform poorly at school.

I had a similar experience to Koren Zailckas when I was a teenager. I thought it was fashionable to drink,
and was addicted to three glasses of whisky a day. I knew it was not a wise thing to do, but I couldnt help it.
I did not have the determination to quit drinking until one day the doctor told me that my stomach had been
seriously damaged by the huge amount of alcohol I took in. As a victim of teenage drinking, I sincerely urge
all teenagers to stay away from alcoholic drinks.

My father has been addicted to alcohol for more than ten years. I always wondered what was so special
about the drink. One day, out of curiosity, I tried a sip. I spat it out at once in disgust I swear I will never
try another sip of it again!

Last week the Teenage Committee organised an anti-drinking seminar at my school. I was upset by the
number of accidents caused by drink driving. The most powerful message I got was Drinking does not
only ruin your own life, but other innocent peoples lives as well. It is such an irresponsible act! If alcohol
brings nothing but harm, why should you keep drinking it?

Ive decided to take up voluntary work for the committee. I hope to help spread this message, especially
around campus and to my fellow schoolmates.

Around the Clock

Over the last few years, more and more Internet bars, cafs and fast food shops in Hong Kong have chosen
to stay open around the clock. Just as in 24-hour convenience stores, you can have food and drinks there any
time you like. They are good places not only for food lovers, but also for diligent students, video game
players or even homeless people.

During examination periods, it is not hard to see groups of students burying their heads in piles of books and
notes in fast food shops. They think the study environment in a fast food shop or a caf is better than their
home or a library. I like to study in a fast food shop with my classmates because its not as strict as a library.
We cant talk freely or eat in a library. But in a fast food shop, we can discuss our homework and have
something to eat when we are hungry, said Tom, a Secondary Five student.

In a very different frame of mind, fans of video games gather at 24-hour fast food shops to play video games.
With their PSP or NDS in hand, they can make virtual connections to other players and challenge each other.
Page 3
Some of them become friends and meet up almost every night at fast food shops. My son used to go to
Internet cafs to play online games. Now, he goes to fast food shops to play PSP with others. Sometimes, he
stays there overnight because it is free of charge, and he doesnt come home until seven oclock in the
morning! a mother said angrily.

However, there is a less desirable reason for staying overnight in fast food shops. In Hong Kong, and even in
cities as prosperous as those of Japan, 24-hour fast food shops have become shelters for homeless people.
People can sleep there overnight even if they do not spend a single dollar in the shop. 24-hour fast food
shops have become the paradise of homeless people.

With more and more 24-hour restaurants, the sleeping hours of some Hong Kong people must be getting
shorter. Some people upset their biological clock and turn fast food shops into their second home. No matter
how convenient 24-hour restaurants are, we really should look after our bodies better and lead a healthy and
balanced life.
