A. General
This paint schedule is made according, to shioovvner's requirement and SIGMA
paint company's recommendation and shipyard's shipbuilding practice.
The painting works including surface preparation to be executed in accordance
with builder's practice. The surface preparation grades to be as per international
standards ISO.
Copper, copper alloy, aluminum, alloy and stainless steel in weather areas to be
painted in general unless otherwise specified.
Time schedule for painting of each coat to be decided according to the Builders
construction schedule but particular to be within recoating intervals recommended
by the paint maker. In case of a surpassed over-coating interval, surface treatment
to be done in accordance with SIGMA recommendation.
Painting for the parts or spaces not specially specified to be similar to the
surrounding space or comparable space.
Coating of machinery, electrical equipment, outfitting, navigation equipment,
furniture etc. to be done by the manufacturers standard unless otherwise specified .
When, paint damage occurs before or after installation on board the damaged parts
to repair with equivalent paint to original and in case of extensive damage a full
coat to be applied after repairs.
All sharp edges, edge of small holes, such as slots, scallops, drain holes etc.,
flame cut free edges of structural steel and lamination to be ground smooth. The
criteria of steel preparation shall be in accordance with the basic ship building
spec.
Pinholes and welding spatters have to be removed during surface preparation
according to paint maker's recommendation.

B. SURFACE PREPARATION
1. Primary surface preparation
All steel plates and profiles (except surface of plates to cargo tanks, slop tanks
and residual tanks) used for the construction of the tankers and with thickness
between 6mm and 40mm are to be shot blasted by automatic line to JS085G1--1:
Sa2.5 (hereinafter all mentioned de-rusting grades are according to ISO standard).
After blasting, the surface profile (Rz) should be between 4075rnicrons, equals
to the profile of ISO 8503 Medium grade to Course grade.
Profiles and steel plates with thickness less than 6mm or more than 40mni are
to be grit blasted to Sa2.5 and with surface profile (Rz) between 4075microns
2. Shop priming
After primary surface preparation, all stee! material (except surface of plates to
Page 3 of 3

cargo tanks, slop tanks and residual tanks) must be protected by one coat of
inorganic zinc silicate shop-primer immediately as per yard usual practice, DPT:
1520microns to be equal to 2025microns on test plate.
3, Secondary surface preparation
For secondary surface preparation, grinding or blasting to be chosen according
to different positions and different type of paints, to achieve relevant cleaning
grade.
Before the first coat is applied, the welding seams, the damages on shop primer
by welding, burning, rubbing, etc., and the rusted steel surface to be prepared in
accordance with the following table.

meanwhile the original surface profile retained, and foreign matters such as oil or
grease contamination, zinc salt and dust must be removed.
Fuel oil tanks, diesel oil tanks, lub. Oil tanks, sludge tanks, etc. to be cleaned
and oil wiped,
4. Cleaning before coating or over-coating
The surfaces to be cleaned of oil, moisture, dust, and other foreign materials
with thinner , fresh water, wire brush, or compressed air prior to coating .

C. App i i cat i on of Paints

1. Environment Request.
During paint application and during early curing stage, the atmosphere relative
humidity measured near to the substrate must not exceed 85%. Special care "will be
taken for water ballast tanks, due to reduced air movement in these enclosed
spaces.
Before and during application of paints, the temperature of substrate must be at
least 3 C higher than the dew point of the atmosphere.
At block stage and on slip way / after lunching, forced ventilation and suitable
humidity are required to improve the vapor of thinner and the drying/curing
progress of film, during application and early curing stage.
2. Film Thickness Measurement
In principle the film thickness management is in order to control the total DFT
(dry film thickness) of a coating system. But if the primer and the topcoat have
absolutely different property and performance, then the DFT of primer coats and
the DFT of topcoats must be controlled separately. Under water hull paint
thickness to be checked before and after application of anti-fouling paint and
recorded.
In general, 90% of the readings must not be less than the specified DFT and
the rest 10% readings must not be less than 90% of the specified DFT unless
otherwise specified.
Piigc 5 of 5

a. '"specified DFT' mentioned above means the DFT specified in the paint schedule
agreed by yards and SIGMA and approved by the owner.
b. Three readings should be taken around one point, "fake the average as the final
reading.
c. The dry film thickness don't need to be measured in welding seams, free edge of
structural members, the edge of small holes such as slots, scallops, drain holes,
air holes, etc. as well as the areas within 1 cm adjacent to the above areas.
3. Stripe Coat
in principle stripe coat before or after full spray is necessary to wet/cover
rough substrate and to build up specified DFT for hand welding seams, free edges,
back of softeners, etc. It is not necessary to apply stripe coat at automatic welds.
4. The painting to be carried out by high pressure airless spray in general. Where
the spraying is impractical, the brush or roller to be used.
5. Paint film finished can not have the defects such as holiday, color oozing, lifting
and bubbles. For cosmetic area such as topside, superstructure, sagging, brush
trace and wrinkle should be avoided. These defects found should be repaired
and/or should be done over again if the defect is serious.
6. In asoects of scaffolding, lighting, ventilation, Daintina interval, choose and
adjust of painting equipment, yard must follow the requests in the technical
data-sheet of SIGMA and suggestions from the technical service of SIGMA.
Relevant safety rules must be fulfilled.
7. All anti-fouling paints in flat bottom area shall be finished before launching. So
we can save time in docking due to not shifting docking block.
8. After installation of small fittings and other hot work in way of drinking water
tanks are finished, Fresh (Potable) water tanks to be sand-blasted. Then 7785
sigmaguard csf 85 will be applied for the whole tanks. Any damages that occurs at
later stage must be ground to St3 and touched up according to the specified paint
system.
9. The stainless steel which have to be painted shall be degreased and treated by
sand paper and painted with one coat of 7417 signia universal primer 60microns
before installation.
10. No paint for void spaces not accessible for painting, just protected by corrosion
inhibitor.
11. In general, the steel structure surfaces and welding seams to be painted before
the leak test. However, erection welding seams and fillet welding seams forming
tank boundary to be painted after the leak test. The adhesive tape may be used to
Pa.ue 6 o f 6

protect the erection joints and the fillet welding seams waiting for leak test from
contamination by surrounding painting.
12. All ballast tanks, cooling water tank, cooling water drain tank, oily bilge tank,
sea water duct, washing water tanks and boiler feed water tank shall be painted
with two coats according paint schedule in block stage. After block erection, the
erection welding seams, fillet welding seams for air tieht test and damages will be
ground to st3 and touched up with two coats according to paint spec,
13. Cargo tanks, slop tanks and residual tanks shall be painted after launching,
14. Rudder and rudder horn inside shall be ground to st2 at least and painted with
one coat of zinc silicate shop primer before closing plate. Some corrosion inhibitor
will be put into rudder and rudder horn in order to improve corrosion protection.
15. Upper deck shall be painted after launching. The DFT of zinc silicate primer
should be controlled strictly.
16. After the specified coating is applied, the damages in paint film to be repaired
at proper time. When the damage reaches the steel surface an rust occurs, the
surface to be cleaned by the wire brush and /or disc sander, edges to be feathered
and to be touched up as originally specified.
