Abstract: This work quantifies the productivity index increment of a horizontal well by the exploitation of a more distant sandstone, when between the closer sandstone and the more distant sandstone there exist a closed formation. This situation arises sometimes in the drilling of offshore horizontal wells. In these cases, it becomes necessary to quantify the profit of a greater productivity against the additional costs of drilling and completing a more lengthy well. For this quantification, a previously developed mathematical model has been used, which takes into consideration the effects of the frictional and the accelerating pressure losses. Sensibility analyses are presented with relation to the length and productivity of the more distant sandstone. An economical study is also presented for the case of an exponential production decline.
