CausesofAlzheimer'sdisease
Alzheimer'sdiseaseiscausedbypartsofthebrainshrinking(atrophy),whichaffectsthestructureandfunctionofparticularbrainareas.

Thesereducetheeffectivenessofhealthyneurons(nervecellsthatcarrymessagestoandfromthebrain),graduallydestroyingthem.

Althoughit'sstillunknownwhattriggersAlzheimer'sdisease,severalfactorsareknowntoincreaseyourriskofdevelopingthecondition.

youreach65yearsofage.
However,it'snotjustolderpeoplewhoareatriskofdevelopingAlzheimer'sdisease.Around1in20peoplewiththeconditionareunder65.Thisiscalled
earlyonsetAlzheimer'sdiseaseanditcanaffectpeoplefromaroundtheageof40.
Familyhistory
ThegenesyouinheritfromyourparentscancontributetoyourriskofdevelopingAlzheimer'sdisease,althoughtheactualincreaseinriskissmallifyou
haveaclosefamilymemberwiththecondition.
However,inafewfamilies,Alzheimer'sdiseaseiscausedbytheinheritanceofasinglegene,andtherisksoftheconditionbeingpassedonaremuch
higher.
