Reflection Paper
MALAYBALAY CITY CENTRAL SCHOOL

This is the first school we visited in our field trip last February 19, 2016. It was Friday
when we have our trip to Malaybalay for the purpose of visiting SPED schools and Special
Children. When we arrived in the Principals office, we are asked by our teacher to offer a song
to the teachers inside the office. After singing, we planned to sing in the following rooms were
going to visit that we will render a song and by using sign language for the HI (Hearing
Impaired) children. We chose to sing Love in any Language and start to learn the basic sign
language of each sentences.
The first and third room that we visited is for the Hearing Impaired children in Grades 4
and 6. That was the first HI room we have entered and they have 3 teachers and 12 students.
The ages of the students ranges from 11-16. According to their teacher, some of the deaf and
mute students have only acquired this kind of disability not a congenital. When we were
inside, we sand for them using sign language and we have noticed that the students were
much behaved. They focus their eyes to their teachers as they deliver the message. I have
observed that when somebody is talking they were much behaved and really giving their
attention to the person. Their room is not really a conducive room for it is small and there are
a lot of them. But their equipment can really help and teach their children to learn how to
communicate. The activities given to the students are really appropriate to the ages of the
students. I also appreciated their teacher because, she is really fun and active and so, her
students really enjoyed their class.
The second room we visited is for the VI (Visually Impaired) students. But they only have
2 students and 1 teacher. Their classroom is only small, but a very conducive room for the 2
students. I really appreciate their learning materials like braille, radio, plastic eggs, egg trays,
and other teaching aids used by the teacher. I also appreciated the teachers patience in
teaching her blind students. Sequencing of activities are also part of their lesson. Acquainting
letters used plastic egg models. Luke James is the name of the student and I am very happy to
know and interact with this kid. But, as they go on with their lesson, I observed that the kid is
Fast Learner. When he was asked by his teacher, he can answer right away.
The fourth room we visited is the children with ID (Intellectual Disabilities). This kind of
ability affects how they talk, act, learn and understand things. When we entered the room, we
are welcomed by the three students together with their teacher. At that moment, they are
having their class about Daily Living. We are asked by their teacher to assist in their activity
which is how to use the iron, and how to iron clothes. I have observed that students are happy
and excited when we are many inside the room. They enjoyed their activity and thanked us for
being their assistants in their class. I observed that the teachers strategy of teaching is
Inductive Method. First, she teach what is the purpose of the electricity, the iron and the
stand. I appreciated their classroom very much for it is really a conducive classroom. They
have fan inside the room, tables and chairs and enough space to use for their activities. The
school also offers special program to the SPED students which is their Mainstreaming and
Social Day. The Sped students are asked to gather inside the room and have their social
activity.
The fifth room is also a room for students with Intellectual Disability but to be specific,
those are Mentally Retarded students. The teachers strategy in teaching her students is really
scaffolding strategy because she really needs to spoon feed the lessons to her students.
The last room we visited is for the Autism and ADHD. But unfortunately, we didnt meet
the students with Autism and ADHD because they already went home because it was
noontime. But, as we enter their room, I have observed that they have more toys, learning
materials, bigger rooms and chairs. Why? Because, this kind of activity need attention, and
space for them to play. Their attention span is just very short. So, thats why they need more
space and things to play and to use for learning. All in all, they have 8 teachers in SPED at
Malaybalay Central School.
