In 1934 Tregers began the production of steel windows. —— By 1942 / 43 Tregers produced: steel windows, fibre "The Builder's Prteud suitcases and galvanised hardware The company was at this time known as Rhodesian Tin and Steel Manufacturers (Pvt) Ltd the forerunner of today’s Monarch Steel. A factory was commissioned at its existing site in Khami Road, ” and assumed its Monarch name. By 1947, all the steel ware goods had been transferred to the Khami Road factory and by 1953, a branch had been opened in Harare. At this stage, the product list included: window frames, door frames, fly screens, electric water heaters, stainless steel sinks, urinals, wheelbarrows and bread bins. In order to meet the needs of a growing company and industry in general, The Steel Service Centre was opened in 1981. As the “heavy metal” brother to the other companies in the ‘Treger Group, Monarch Steel concentrates primarily on builders ware. Monarch Steel has three manufacturing divisions producing: windows and doors frames, sanitary ware, kitchen furniture, builders and domestic hardware. These three factories are supported by their own Steel Service Centre, plastic injection department, toolroom, plaiting shop, foundry and garage, ensuring continuity of material supply and components required for production. An indication of the size of Monarch Steel is to be found in the Steel Service Centre, which has the capability of de-coiling and cutting to length mild steel sheets. It has the capacity to handle in excess of 25 000 tonnes per annum, ensuring a supply to meet local and export requirements.
