COMBINED OPERATION: OPENING UP

NEW MARKET PROSPECTS

In a modernization project that was realized for the

first time worldwide by SMS Siemag in 2004, an
existing hot rolling mill was extended by installing
new components in order to additionally allow cold
rolling operations on the same mill. The extra capaci-
ty thus achieved enables our customer, a leading
aluminum processor, to supply the aeronautical and
automotive industries reliably with suitable products.

Airwash exhaust-air
The initial configuration is constituted by a 128 cleaning system.
reversing hot-rolling millstand for plates. When the
modernization measures are completed, it will be
possible additionally to cold-roll aluminum strips of
width up to 2,800 mm on this stand. The fast-acting
shifting devices for the work rolls with CVC plus
technology contribute directly to the attainment of
a wide and profitable product range.

HIGHER FORMING CAPACITY,

VERY SHORT STANDSTILL TIMES

The modernization concept offered by SMS Siemag in

respect of engineering, production, logistics, installa-
tion and coordination for the mechanical, electrical and
automation systems of the millstand has made it pos-
sible to replace the complete mill while keeping stand-
still times extremely short. With the resulting extra
yield of power and efficiency, the customer is now
able to attain higher forming capacity and to supply
the aeronautical industry with plates in larger dimen-
sions and with improved metallurgical properties.

The initial configuration was constituted by a 148

reversing hot-rolling mill for plates. This has been
replaced by a 160mill of this type which is now
capable of rolling aluminum plates up to a maximum
width of 3,900 mm.

Our cold rolling mills are designed as all-inclusive

concepts. This enables the customers to satisfy all of
the requirements for attaining for top economic and
technical performance. Millstands, work rolls, backup
rolls, drives, shifting devices, adjustment and retract-
ing devices these mechanical core components
have a decisive advantage due to their technological
excellence.

An example of this is the CVC plus for continuous

adaptation of the roll gap. Through axial shifting of
the CVC plus rolls in opposite directions, the effect
of a positive or negative roll crown is achieved in a
continuously variable manner. The strip possesses
optimum flatness, an improved surface and a lower
degree of edge drop. The smaller number of roll
changes results in a cost advantage. The coordinated
arrangement of millstands and peripherals serves
to optimize the transport of the materials to be

place at high speed up to 50 m per minute. The Packaging systems
fact that SMS Siemag supplies all equipment items Automatic guided vehicle systems
from a single source ensures the perfect integration
and harmonization needed for efficient continuous
operation. Strip gauges from 0.2 to 2.9 mm and strip
widths from 400 to 1,500 mm are achieved. The

cessing are automated throughout all processing
stages. For the crucial procedures, Level 2 process
models are available. These make use of sensor and
