2.2 PROCESS FLOW

Process flow of how wastewater is treated:

Wastewater Odor Screening Primary Secondary

Collection Control Treatment Treatment

Sludge Disinfection Tertiary Bio-solid

Treatment Treatment Handling

1) Wastewater collection
- Collection systems are put in place by municipal administration, home owners as well
as business owners to ensure that all the wastewater is collected and directed to a
central point. This wastewater is then transported to a treatment plant using
underground drainage systems.

2) Odour Control
- Odour control is very vital because wastewater holds a lot of dirty substances that can
cause a bad odour through the years. To make sure that the neighbouring areas are
free from the foul smell, odour treatment are commenced at the treatment plant.

3) Screening
- Screening involves the elimination of huge objects such as broken bottles or bottle top,
cotton buds, diapers, face wipes, nappies, plastics, rags, sanitary items or any other
object that can damage the equipment in the treatment plant.

4) Primary Treatment
- Involves the separation of macrobiotic solid matter from the wastewater and is done by
pouring the wastewater into large tanks for the solid matter to settle at the surface of
the tanks. The sludge that settles at the surface of the tanks is detached by a scrappers
and is pushed to the centre of the cylindrical tanks. The remaining water is pumped for
secondary treatment.

5) Secondary Treatment
- Also called as the activated sludge process, the secondary treatment stage involves
adding seed sludge to the wastewater to ensure that is broken down further. Air is first
pumped into huge aeration tanks which mix the wastewater with the seed sludge which
is basically small amount of sludge, which fuels the growing of microorganism that uses
oxygen and the growth of different small microorganisms that devour the residual
organic matter.

8|ENVIRON HOLDINGS SDN BHD

6) Bio-solids handling
- The solid matter that settle out after the primary and secondary treatment stages are
directed to digesters. The digesters are heated at room temperature. The solid wastes
are then treated for a month where they experience anaerobic digestion. All through
this process, methane gases are produced and there is a formation of nutrient rich bio-
solids which are recycled and dewatered into nearby companies. The methane gas
produced is usually used as a supply of energy at the treatment plants.

7) Tertiary Treatment
- This stage is similar to the one used by drinking water treatment plants which clean
raw water for drinking purposes. The tertiary treatment stage has the ability to remove
up to 99 percent of the impurities from the wastewater.

8) Disinfection
- After the primary treatment stage and the secondary treatment process, there are still
some diseases causing organisms in the remaining treated wastewater. The
disinfection process is an essential part of the treatment process because it guards the
health of the animals and the local community who use the water for other usages.

9) Sludge Treatment
- The sludge that is produced and collected during the primary and secondary treatment
processes requires concentration and thickening to enable further processing.

15 | E N V I R O N H O L D I N G S S D N B H D
TASK 1: To read up on sewage wastewater treatment activity. To list out what type of treatment
is involved and type of equipment normally used for the treatment.

The task given is to search and read about sewage treatment activity, type of treatment involved
and the equipment that normally used in wastewater treatment. From this task, I gain some knowledge
about wastewater treatment. Wastewater treatment is the process of eliminating pollutant from
wastewater and converting the wastewater into bilge water that can be discharged into the environment.
There are several stage that are involved in the wastewater which are preliminary, primary, secondary
and tertiary. Wastewater may be dealt with near where the wastewater is created, which may be known
as a decentralized system or maybe an on-site system (in septic tanks, biofilters or aerobic treatment
systems).

Preliminary treatment is the pre-treatment that removes all substances that are easily to
collected from the wastewater before they can damage the pumps and wastewater line of primary
clarifiers. The equipment that are involved in this stage are screener, grit chambers, fat and grease
removal or skimming tanks.

Primary treatment is aimed to remove the fine suspended solids that cannot be removed in the
preliminary treatment. This treatment essentially involves the process of sedimentation or settling.
Sedimentation is normally occur in a large tanks called primary sedimentation tanks or clarifier.

Secondary or biological treatment is designed to considerably degrade the organic content

material of the sewage that are derived from human waste, food waste, soaps and detergent. This stage
of treatment can be classified as aerobic suspended growth system, aerobic attached growth system,
anaerobic suspended growth system and anaerobic attached growth system.

Tertiary treatment or advanced treatment is occasionally needed for the elimination of

suspended and dissolved materials, after the conventional primary and secondary treatments. In
general, the effluent of the sewage acquired after secondary treatment can be conveniently disposed
without causing any nuisance. There are four major processes under tertiary treatment which are solids
removal, biological nitrogen removal, biological phosphorus removal and disinfection.

16 | E N V I R O N H O L D I N G S S D N B H D
ASSIGNMENT: The differences between Positive Displacement, PD Blower and Turbowin
Blower.

Positive Displacement Blower

A positive displacement blower, also known as a PD blower or rotary air blower. PD blower is
a sort of equipment that is used to move air or gas for a diversity of applications. More precisely, this
devices apply positive displacement technology by deceiving a certain capacity of air then discharging
or forcing it out against the system pressure. The air is frequently forced into some type of pipe or hose
to drive material or gas to a destination.

Table 1: The advantages and disadvantages of Positive Displacement (PD) Blower.

Pros Cons
1. Ability to force the bag open to its max size and 1. PD Blowers are noisier (typically 85 db and
force product into a bag - PD blowers are designed to sometimes greater)
output a constant amount of air pressure and volume
simultaneously. Volume and flow are needed in the
correct ratios to fluidize the product and move it into
the bag. The Pressure side of the equation is also
needed to fully open the bag to its maximum potential
and deliver the product and sufficient velocity to
prevent it from mounding up at the discharge of the
spout (which will cause weight inaccuracy, longer fill
times, under filled bags, product spilling when the bag
is removed and other negative side effects.
2. Capable of delivering the highest level of production 2. Higher installation cost
output
3. Can be located up to 100 feet away from the bagger 3. PD Blowers require maintenance (periodic
keeping the noise away from people and the blower checking of oil and cleaning air filters). However, the
out of the dirt and dust of the working area maintenance of PD blowers require is very little.
4. Rebuild area- use standard TEFC motors and drive 4. The expense of capital to buy the blower
components that can be purchased locally

17 | E N V I R O N H O L D I N G S S D N B H D
Turbo Blower

Turbo blower is a high speed centrifugal blower integral with a Permanent Magnet
Synchronized Motor (PMSM), driven through an inverter. In turbo blower, the energy is transfer from a
rotating shaft to air or gas. A pressure rise is achieved by adding kinetic energy to a continuous flow of
air through the rotor or impeller. A turbo blower is different from a turbo compressor by the lower
pressure ratio, with compressor being above 2.5. Turbo blower or centrifugal blower performs in the
middle range of pressure up to 200 kPa while turbo compressor increasing the pressure up to several
hundred of kPa. The blower runs on a levitated shaft with air bearings, thus eliminating wear and tear
through friction and contact and also eliminate vibration and the need of oil lubrication.

The blower of Turbowin is no-oil, low noise (<85 db), semi-permanent and eco-friendly turbo
blower which is combined with the latest technical capability of turbo. Turbowin blower provides the
best efficiency through the use of a high-speed motor, air bearings and a centrifugal compressor design.
This blower will lessen the electricity cost by 30% compared to traditional blower design such as PD
blower and provide a clean and quite working environment.

18 | E N V I R O N H O L D I N G S S D N B H D
TASK 2: a) To identify type of aerator that are available in the market and the difference.

b) To differentiate between Aqua-Jet surface aerator and DDM Mixer.

The second task given by the supervisor is Task 2. This Task is given in second week of
internship. This task consist of 2 question which are: 1) to identify the type of aerator that are available
in the market and make comparison between then, 2) to differentiate between Aqua-Jet surface aerator
and DDM Mixer.

Aerator are various device that are used for the aeration or mixing air with another substance,
such as soil or water. These devices are used to add oxygen to the water. Aeration is a unit process in
which air and water are delivered into intimate contact. Turbulence rise the aeration of flowing streams.
Aeration occur in the aeration tank which are place after the primary clarifier. Aeration as a water
treatment practice is used for the following operations: carbon dioxide reduction (decarbonation),
oxidation of iron and manganese found in many well waters (oxidation tower), ammonia and hydrogen
sulfide reduction (stripping).

The type of aerator that are commonly used in the wastewater treatment can be categorised
into 2 category which are submerged and surface. The aerators that are fall into the submerged
category are diffused air (fined bubble & coarse bubble), sparger turbine and mixer or aerator while the
aerators that fall into the surface category are low-speed turbine aerator, high-speed floating aerator,
aspirating and cascade aerator. The listed type of aerator that found in the market for this task were
SOFIE, the 2-in-1 submersible aerator and mixer (by EUROPELEC), LTF, the low speed surface aerator
(by EUROPELEC), AQUAFEN, the floating high speed surface aerator (by EUROPELEC), High Speed
up-flow aerator (by TYBSA), Team Low Speed Aerators (by TYBSA), High Speed Aspirating aerators
(by TYBSA) and Cascade aerator. All these type of aerator have their own specification and application.

Aqua-Jet Surface Aerator and Aqua DDM Mixer are some of the Environs product. Both equipment are
used in the aeration tank. Aqua-Jet Surface Aerator are designed to provide optimum oxygen transfer
in variety of municipal and industrial wastewater applications while Aqua DDM is designed to provide
maximum mixing efficiency. Aqua-Jet Surface Aerator has upward mixing pattern while Aqua DDM has
downward mixing pattern.

TASK 3: a) Working principle of peristaltic pump.

b) Advantages of peristaltic pump vs other type of pumps (centrifugal, diaphragm

pump, progressive cavity pump).
c) Do comparison between Bredel pump vs Verderflex pump.

This task is given by my Industry Supervisor on the fourth week of the industrial training. This
task is about Peristaltic pump. From the task given, I gained some knowledge about Peristaltic pump.
Peristaltic pump is a type of Positive Displacement Pump utilized to pumping an assortment of fluids.
Those liquid will be held inside a flexible hose or tube fitted in the pump casing. The genuine pumping
principle, known as peristalsis, is totally based on alternating compression and relaxation of the hose
or tube, drawing content in and propelling product out from the pump. A rotor is used to squeeze a leak-
proof tube or hose, thereby forcing the pumped fluid through the hose. As the pumps rotor turns this
sealing pressure moves along the tube or hose forcing product to move away from the pump and into
the discharge line. Where the pressure has been released the hose or tube recovers creating a vacuum,
which draws the product into the suction side of the pump, the priming mechanism. Combination of the
suction and discharge principles produce a powerful self-priming positive displacement action.
Peristaltic are suitable for dispensing, metering and general transfer applications. Typically, peristaltic
tubing pumps offer flow rates as low as 0.0007 ml/min to 45 litres/min and are able to generate pressure
up to 8.6 bar (125 psi).

The advantages of the Peristaltic Pump are the only part of peristaltic pump that comes in
contact with the liquid is tubing. The fluid does not contact with the peristaltic pump so there are no
parts to clean such as valves, diaphragm, seals etc. Thus, make the pump is easy to clean and to
sterilise. All you have to do is to clean or replace the tube. This easy tubing replacement means reducing
the maintenance times and cost. Next, the isolation between the pump moving parts and the process
media, thereby eliminating any risk of cross contamination. Besides that, this pump is suitable for
aggressive, slurries, shear sensitive and viscous fluid. A peristaltic pump is non-siphoning which means
that they prevent back flow into the system. This promotes accuracy during dispensing.

Bredel pump and Verderflex pump both are the peristaltic pump but different brand and
manufacture. Bredel pump is manufactured by Watson-Marlow Fluid Technology Group while
verderflex pump is manufactured by Verderflex. The unique direct-couple design of Bredel heavy duty
hose pumps combines the small footprint of close-coupled pumps with the reliability and ease of use of
long-coupled pumps. Verderflex Industrial peristaltic pumps are extremely robust pumps, ideal for
heavy duty operations on intermittent or continuous duty cycles. The hose used for Bredel Pump are

TASK 4: a) Application of Aquafine UV System.

b) The differences between Aquafine UV System and TrojanUV.

The fourth task that I received from my industry supervisor is about Aquafine UV system.
Aquafine UV are one of the Environ Holdings product. This product are usually used at the tertiary stage
of wastewater treatment. Tertiary stage is for the elimination of suspended and dissolved materials,
after the conventional primary and secondary treatments. The treatment is using ultraviolet (UV)
technology. Ultraviolet (UV) is a powerful technology that has been successfully deployed in industries
such as pharmaceutical, semiconductor, power generation, food and beverage, cosmetic, agriculture,
health care, etc. UV does not add anything to the water stream along with unwanted colour, odour,
chemical, taste or flavour nor does it generate any harmful via-merchandise. UV simplest imparts
energy to the water move inside the form of ultraviolet light to inactivate microorganisms and decrease
chemicals inside the water. The Aquafine UV systems meet the most stringent criteria, including
acceptance by the FDA. The primary advantages of UV systems are environmentally friendly, user
friendly, effective and compact.

The most common application of UV in water treatment is disinfection, but UV also can be used
for the applications in water treatment such as UV disinfection, Chlorine and Chloramine destruction,
Ozone destruction and TOC (Total Oxidizable Carbon) reduction. The other industrial or commercial
market for Aquafine UV systems are aquaculture, food and beverage, life sciences, marine, oil and gas,
power generation and recreational water. There are many series or models for the Aquafine UV
systems. The series that are available for Aquafine UV systems are Chlorid series, CSL series, LS HX
series, MPR series, Optima series, Optima HX series, SCD H series, SL series, SwiftBeverage series,
TrojanUVLogic series and UVK series. Every series in Aquafine UV system are used for different
markets and applications.

Aquafine UV and TrojanUV are both fall under the Trojan Technologies. The business that are
encompassed by Trojan Technologies other than Aquafine and TrojanUV are Trojan Marinex, Salsnes
Filter, USP Technologies and VIQUA. The goods and services supplied by those corporation play
crucial roles in making diverse degree of water treatment progression more powerful, efficient and
maintainable. Aquafine UV are UV disinfection systems for industrial and commercial water and
wastewater treatment while Trojan UV are UV disinfection and UV-oxidation systems for municipal
water and wastewater treatment. Aquafines advanced UV water treatment systems meet the changing
requirements and needs of a diverse customer base around the world. Aquafine UV system provide UV
solutions for TOC reduction, chlorine and chloramine destruction, ozone destruction and disinfection for
many applications in the industrial/commercial sector. TrojanUV designs, manufactures and sells
pressurized and open-channel UV disinfection systems for municipal wastewater and drinking water,
and UV-oxidation systems for environmental contaminant treatment applications.

Site Visit: Testing and Commissioning Turbo Blower

The Testing and Commissioning (TNC) program was held to test the new Turbo Blower
installed at the wastewater treatment plant. The Turbo Blower was installed at the wastewater treatment
plant by the Environs workshop men a few weeks before the TNC program. Turbo blower is a high
speed centrifugal blower integral with a Permanent Magnet Synchronized Motor (PMSM), driven
through an inverter. In turbo blower, the energy is transfer from a rotating shaft to air or gas. The TNC
program was held for four days and was conducted by the technical engineer of the blower supplier.
The function of the Turbo Blower is to supply oxygen into the aeration tank.

On the first day (31st July 2017), we cleaned the area of the new installed blower at the blower
room. The area of the blower is quite dusty and sandy, so we cleaned the area before the TNC program
started. On the second day of the program which is on 1st August 2017, final installation on the
Permanent Magnet (PM) Motor part of the Turbo Blower the technical engineer of the blower supplier.
After that, the technical engineer make an inspection on the blower and its environment condition before
he started the blower. The technical engineer taught us about the components of the Turbo Blower.
The Turbo Blower consist of User Interface Unit, Driving/Inverter system, Control Panel, Blow off Valve,
Suction Filter System and PM Motor.

On 2nd August 2017, we attended a briefing for the Turbo Blower operation and the control
parameters that are being used in the operation of the blower in the meeting room at WWTP. The
briefing was for Environ only. After that, we learned about the start-up procedure for the Turbo Blower
on the site. The whole process to operate the blower was shown to us by the technical engineer. In the
evening, the continuation of the early briefing was held at the Environs meeting room.

On 3rd August 2017, a briefing for the blower operation was held for the client of the Turbo
