PART-A (10x2=20)
1. What is phase distortion?
2. Name the types of distortion?
3. Give the equations for the characteristic impedance and propagation constant of a
dissipation less line.
4. Define standing wave ratio.
5. Mention the disadvantages of single stub matching.
6. Design a quarter wave transformer to match a load of 200 to a source resistance of
500. The operating frequency is 200 MHz .
7. Write the disadvantages of constant- k filter.
8. A prototype LPF is to be designed which must have R0 = 600 ohm, f c = 1KHz,
. Find filter elements [ L and C ].
9. Define the terms phase velocity and group velocity.
10. What is the dominant mode of rectangular wave guide? Why?
PART-B (5x16=80)
11. (A) (i) Derive the equation for wave length & velocity of propagation (6)
(ii) Explain: Waveform distortion (7) [or]
(B) (I) What are the types of waveform distortion introduced by a transmission line. Derive the
condition for the distortion less operation of a transmission line. (6)
(II) The constants of a transmission line are R=6/Km, L= 2.2mH/km, C=0.005F/Km, G=0.25x10 -3
mho/Km . Calculate the attenuation and phase constant at 1000Hz (7) [or]
12. (A) (i) Derive the expressions for the input impedance of the dissipation less line. Deduce the input
impedance of open and short circuited dissipation less lines (6)
(II) A lossless line in the air having a characteristic impedance of 300 is terminated by
unknown impedance .The first voltage minimum is located at 15cm from the load. The standing wave is 3.3 .
Calculate the wavelength and terminating impedance (7)
(B) (I) Discuss the method of power and impedance measurement on the line (6)
(II) A slotted line experiment performed with the following results: Distance between successive
minima is 2.1cm, distance of first voltage minima from load 0.9cm, SWR is 2.5 and R 0= 50. Determine the load
impedance (7)
13. (A) (I) A load has admittance YR/G0 = 2.75 +J1.75. Find the length and location for a single-stub tuner,
short circuited. Use smith chart and verify the result by using direct formula. (6)
(II) What is quarter wave transformer? Discuss the application of quarter wave line in Impedance
matching (7) [or]
(B) A long lossless transmission line with Z 0=50 operating at 2GHz is terminated with a load (60+J40).
If v=0.6c on the line, find reflection coefficient, standing wave ratio and input impedance. Use smith chart (13)
14. (A) Derive the expression for characteristic impedance of symmetrical T and section networks. (13)

(B) Design a constant K -section band elimination filter (both T and - section) with cut-off frequencies
of 2KHz and 6KHz. The design impedance is 500 . (13)
15. (A) A pair of perfectly conducting plates is separated by 7cm in air carries a signal with frequency of
6GHz in TE 1 mode. Find cut-off frequency, phase constant, attenuation constant for f=0.8fc and cut-off wavelength

(B) Derive the field expression for TM wave propagation in rectangular waveguide with relevant
expressions and diagrams for the field components. Write the instantaneous field expressions for TM 12 mode in
rectangular waveguide. (13)

PART-C

1. A 50 transmission line connected to a load impedance ZL = 60+j80 the operating frequency


is 300MHz. A double stub turner spaced on eighth of the wave length apart is used to match
level the line, find the required length of the short limited stub using smith chart.
