Letter from the Editor

Helping overcome
productivity challenges
The race for increasing productivity is endless no matter where you are.
Europes rich history and mature markets pose many challenges social,
political and economic as it adapts to globalization. In addition, as Eastern
European countries, such as Poland and the Czech Republic, develop their econo-
mies, competitive dynamics are greatly affected. Like many companies around the
globe, European firms are reassessing their productivity to
compete in the global economy.

Europe also faces the challenges of an aging workforce and a shortage of

skilled engineering. Like the United States, Europes experienced engineers
are set to retire in the next five years and their intellectual capital with them.

Throughout its 35-year history, Intergraph has been helping customers around
the world to improve productivity in placement and operation of CAPEX facilities.
Today, our SmartPlant Enterprise is helping customers change the way they do
business by offering solutions that make them more productive and enable them
to capture and reuse their intellectual capital across the entire enterprise.

As you will read in this issue of Insight, Paul Hodges, of Shaw Stone & Webster
in the United Kingdom, discusses global projects and the outlook for the
industry (p. 4).

This issue of Insight highlights the successes of several customers:

Murray & Roberts, an engineering firm based in South Africa, has

successfully transformed its project handover to 100 percent digital with SmartPlant
Foundation (p. 6). German-based Linde Engineering is one of
several contractors that implemented a concurrent engineering infrastructure
with Intergraph tools to deliver Snhvit on time (p. 16). OMV Aktiengesellschaft,
in Austria, saw a paradigm shift in its ability to execute plant modifications
using up-to-date P&ID data from SmartPlant P&ID (p. 10).

Europe, the Middle East and Africa are poised to meet the challenges of its
changing business climates and a global economy. And Intergraph will continue
to be there to help.

four different constituents: senior manage-

going to receive the implementation, and
lastly, the general company population.
By properly communicating during all
phases of the process, everyone in
the company can be aware as the
innovations mature.
