salvezza.
Il bilancio dellanno 2012 per il Gruppo Cavagna si chiude positivamen-
te se consideriamo i tempi in cui stiamo navigando.
Nonostante un economia italiana in piena recessione e unUnione
Europea che stenta a dare credibilit alla propria struttura e alla pro-
pria moneta unica, il Gruppo riuscito a mantenere le proprie quote
di mercato diversificando le vendite in pi di 124 paesi e ampliando il
proprio portafoglio prodotti.
Solo grazie alla presenza produttiva e commerciale del Gruppo sui cin-
que continenti, stato possibile mantenere il livello delle vendite pari a
quelle del 2011. Nonostante i mercati sudamericani ed asiatici abbiano
rallentato la loro crescita rispetto agli anni precedenti, hanno permesso
tuttavia di compensare larresto quasi drammatico della richiesta italia-
na e di buona parte del fabbisogno dei nostri prodotti in Europa.
La domanda cresciuta in Asia anche grazie alla ristrutturazione in
corso della Cavagna Group Asia che sta dando i primi risultati nei mer-
cati Gpl asiatici e australiani. Abbiamo assistito a una forte crescita sul
mercato australiano per valvole per gas industriali e la nuova gamma di
regolatori RV, Kosan plus e la nuova gamma di regolatori per barbecue
prodotti dalla Zhongshan Cavagna per il mercato australiano. Da ricor-
dare inoltre lapertura dei nuovi uffici commerciali a Bangkok quale
polo distributivo per il gruppo in Asia. Da menzionare inoltre nel 2012
la prima vendita nella storia del gruppo di valvole integrate per gas
medicali fornite in Giappone ad ospedali ed ambulanze.
Anche in Sudamerica, nonostante il rallentamento del mercato prin-
cipale (Brasile), in tutta la regione il trend stato comunque positivo
grazie anche alle prime vendite significative delle valvole metano auto
in Colombia, Brasile e Venezuela.
La Cemco Kosangas ha iniziato la produzione e la commercializzazione
di nuovi prodotti come la valvole P13 brasiliana e il regolatore doppio
stadio per bombole da 45 kg. Questi ci hanno permesso per la prima
volta nella storia di entrare nel mercato Gpl bombola brasiliano. Un
nuovo edificio sorger alla periferia di Santiago su un terreno di 24.000
metri quadrati e ospiter la nuova unit produttiva della nuova Cemco
Kosangas. Linaugurazione prevista per la prossima primavera.

2012: another difficult year for
the Italian and European eco-
nomy. The Asian and South
American markets are slowing
down, but they are our salvation.
The Cavagna Group budget for the year 2012 has closed positively,
considering the times we are going through.
Despite the Italian economy being in full recession and the European
Union striving hard to obtain credibility for its structure and its single
currency, the Group has managed to maintain its own shares of the
market by diversifying sales in more than 124 countries and expanding
its product portfolio.
It is only thanks to the production and commercial presence of the
Group on the five continents that has it been possible to maintain sales
at the level of those in 2011. Despite the slowdown of growth in the
South American and Asian markets compared to previous years, they
have nevertheless allowed us to compensate for the almost dramatic
halt in Italian demand and a large amount of demand for our products
in Europe. Demand has increased in Asia thanks also to the ongoing
restructuring of Cavagna Group Asia which is providing its first results
in the Asian and Australian LPG markets. We have witnessed a strong
growth in the Australian market for valves for industrial gases, along
with the new range of RV regulators, Kosan plus and the new range of
regulators for barbecues produced by Zhongshan Cavagna for the Au-
stralian market. Also worthy of note is the opening of new commercial
offices in Bangkok as a distribution centre for the group in Asia. 2012
also saw the first sales in the groups history of integrated valves for
medical gases supplied in Japan to hospitals and ambulances.
In South America, too, despite the slowdown of the main market
(Brazil), over the entire region the trend has still been positive, thanks
also to the first significant sales of valves for methane cars in Colombia,
Brazil and Venezuela.
Cemco Kosangas has begun the production and marketing of new pro-
ducts such as the Brazilian P13 valve and the double stage regulator
for 45 kg cylinders. These have allowed us for the first time in history
to enter into the Brazilian LPG cylinder market. A new building will
be constructed on the outskirts of Santiago on land of 24,000 square
meters which will accommodate a new production unit for the new
Cemco Kosangas. Its opening is scheduled for next spring.
The emerging East European market has provided very satisfactory

strando una crescita a doppia cifra in Russia e nei paesi dellEx Unione
Sovietica in particolare in Ucraina, Bielorussia e Uzbekistan. Le valvole
metano per autobus e altri mezzi pesanti, unitamente alle valvole per
pompieri e per gas medicali sono state lelemento trainante della cresci-
ta di questa regione e su cui il Gruppo sta investendo numerose risorse.
Grazie allintroduzione di nuove gamme di prodotto come le valvole
per metano auto, le Viproxy per gas-mix ed heliox, le valvole pe la
gasificazione dellacqua potabile, la nuova gamma industriale kosan
plus si riusciti a penetrare nuovi mercati diversificando cos il rischio
di esposizione a un solo segmento dellindustria.
Nonostante il mercato nord americano non stia navigando in acque
migliori rispetto a quello europeo, il Gruppo Cavagna ha raggiunto
comunque lobiettivo che si era posto per il 2012 con USD 50 milioni
di vendite. Il cambio euro/dollaro ci stato favorevole permettendo
cos di mantenere la competitivit dei nostri prodotti sul mercato nord
americano.
Il mercato medio orientale che storicamente ha sempre rappresentato
un punto di forza per i nostri prodotti, a causa dellinstabilit politica
che ha colpito tutta larea del Medio Oriente e in parte anche il Nord
Africa ha subito una brusca frenata darresto.
Il 2012 stato anche lanno dellacquisizione del 100% di Mesura
Francia. Questa recente operazione ha portato due nuovi siti pro-
duttivi uno in Francia e una Joint Venture in Tunisia che hanno dato
definitivamente lopportunit al Gruppo di entrare nel segmento del
metano domestico. La gamma di regolatori gas metano per applicazio-
ne domestica residenziale e commerciale, completa perfettamente la
gamma dei regolatori Gpl gi esistente.
La domanda di Gpl, a fronte della concorrenza del metano domestico
e dellelettricit di origine nucleare, sta subendo una contrazione nei
mercati maturi. Il Gruppo, grazie ai regolatori e i prodotti MESURA riesce
oggi a garantire la sua presenza anche in questi mercati. Il segmento del
metano domestico e relativi componenti (come contatori, armadietti,
etc) ha molti pi utilizzatori rispetto allattuale mercato del Gpl nel
mondo e garantir quindi grandi opportunit di crescita alla nostra
Divisione Regolatori.
Le previsioni per il 2013 non sono confortanti n per il mercato italiano
ancora in recessione n per buona parte del mercato europeo.
Dobbiamo continuare a lavorare come nel 2012 puntando sulla crescita
nei mercati emergenti e consolidando la nostra posizione nei nuovi
mercati apertisi nel 2012 focalizzandoci sulle opportunit che sapranno
offrire i mercati asiatici e sudamericani.
Cos come diventa altrettanto importante investire energie mirate
e risorse sulla Divisione Regolatori che da oggi si arricchisce di una
gamma di prodotti per il vasto mercato del gas metano.

Uzbekistan. The methane valves for buses and other heavy vehicles,
together with valves for the fire brigade and for medical gases have
been the driving force behind the growth of this region and the Group
is investing significant resources therein.
Thanks to the introduction of new product ranges like the valves for
methane cars, the Viproxy valves for gas-mix and heliox, valves for
gasification of drinking water and the new industrial range kosan plus,
it has been possible to penetrate new markets, thereby diversifying the
risk of exposure to a single segment of the industry.
Despite the North American market not sailing in better waters than
those of the European market, the Cavagna Group has nonetheless
achieved the objective it set itself for 2012 with USD 50 million of sales.
The Euro/Dollar exchange rate has been in our favour, thereby allowing
us to maintain our product competitiveness on the North American
market. The Middle East market, which has historically represented a
strongpoint for our products, as a result of the political instability that
has affected the whole area of the Middle East and also parts of North
Africa, has suffered a sharp slowdown.
2012 was also the year of the acquisition of 100% of Mesura France.
This recent operation has brought two new production sites; one
in France and a Joint Venture in Tunisia which finally provided the
opportunity for the Group to enter into the segment of domestic
methane. The range of methane gas regulators for domestic residential
and commercial application perfectly completes the already existing
range of LPG regulators. The demand for LPG, in the face of com-
petition from domestic methane and electricity of nuclear origin, is
undergoing a contraction in mature markets. The Group, thanks to the
MESURA regulators and MESURA products is now able to guarantee
its presence even in these markets. The segment of domestic methane
and the respective components (such as metres, cabinets, etc) has
many more users compared to the current market of LPG in the world
and will therefore guarantee huge opportunities for growth for our
Regulators Division.
The forecasts for 2013 are not reassuring for the Italian market in reces-
sion or for a good part of the European market.
We must continue to work as we did in 2012, focusing on growth in
emerging markets and strengthening our position in the new markets
that opened up in 2012, targeting opportunities that the Asian and
South American markets might be able to offer.
It has also become increasingly important to invest targeted energies
and resources on the Regulators Division that is now enriched by a
range of products for the vast market of methane gas.

Stiamo per lasciarci alle spalle un 2012 dominato dallo
spettro della crisi economica, nazionale ed internazio-
nale. Un 2012 in cui il Nord Italia, storicamente traino
delleconomia nazionale grazie alle sue industrie e
allintraprendenza dei suoi industriali, ha vissuto e sta
vivendo un brusco arresto della crescita, con conse-
guente chiusura di numerose aziende.
Un 2012 in cui la parola dordine in ambito economico
stata prudenza. Un 2012 in cui il diktat ha imposto a molte
aziende di restare alla finestra in attesa di una congiuntura
economica pi favorevole. Un 2012 in cui, nonostante tutto questo,
il Gruppo Cavagna ha deciso di investire, ancora una volta, denaro e
risorse umane per acquisire una nuova azienda.
Questa volta la divisione

appena lambito: quello del Gas
Naturale.
Il nuovo acquisto si chiama
Mesura. Lazienda, fondata
nel 1949 dalla famiglia Mann,
si occupa dapprima della fab-
bricazione di contatori per il
gas, decidendo pochi anni
dopo, su richiesta della Regia
Municipalizzata di Bordeaux, di
dedicarsi alla progettazione e
fabbricazione di regolatori per
il gas.
Nel 1956 la societ si stabili-
sce nella zona industriale di

In questo contesto la Mesura cresce, fa evolvere i suoi prodotti e la sua
tecnologia ed acquista sempre maggiore credibilit in ambito naziona-
le ed internazionale.
Tutto ci si concretizza con lottenimento dellISO 9001 versione 2000,
con la certificazione NF, con la creazione di partenariati con quattro
societ in Algeria, Tunisia, Turchia e Polonia e, cosa pi importante, con
laccreditamento quale fornitore di serie A presso la compagnia Gaz de
France e le sue numerose sedi in tutto il mondo.
Dal lontano 1949 ad oggi, numerose trasformazioni hanno interessato
questazienda francese, trasformandola da piccola realt artigianale in
cui allinizio lavoravano 5 persone a societ di respiro internazionale,
che conta su una equipe di 76 dipendenti ed un fatturato che si atte-
ster a fine 2012 a circa 13mln di euro.
Il Gruppo Cavagna inizia ad interessarsi a Mesura nel 2008, ponendo in
essere le prime relazioni mirate a migliorare gli acquisti della compo-
nentistica. A tal fine stata messa a disposizione di Mesura la Cavagna
Pressofusioni per lo stampaggio del corpo del regolatore B6, concretiz-
zatosi con le prime spedizioni a met 2009.
Nel 2009 Cavagna acquista il 30% delle quote di Mesura, rendendo

We are about to emerge from a 2012 haunted by the
spectre of the national and international economic
crisis. A 2012 during which Northern Italy that,
with its industries and dynamic entrepreneurs, has
always been the traditional powerhouse of the
Italian economy, has borne the brunt and and is
still negatively affected by an abrupt retrenchment
of growth with consequent closing of numerous com-
panies. A 2012 in which the main watchword on the
economic front has been prudence. A 2012 in which many
companies have been forced to maintain a watching brief while
awaiting a more favourable economic climate. A 2012 in which,
despite all the above factors, the Cavagna Group has decided to
invest, once again, money and human resources in the acquisition of
a new company.
With this operation, the Regulators Division acquires a manufacturing
unit that will allow it to enter a market only partially explored to-date:
Natural Gas.
After operating initially in the manufacture of gas meters, the new
acquisition, Mesura, founded in 1949 by the Mann family, decided
some years later, at the request of the state-owned gas company of
Bordeaux, to focus on the design and manufacture of gas regulators.
In 1956, the company relocated to the industrial zone of Forbach, a
small town on the French-German border more widely known for its
intense coal mining activities, in the not too forgotten past, and as the
site of a famous battle during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
Building on these bases, Mesura continued to expand, upgrading its
products and technology and acquiring increasing credibility both
nationally and internationally.
All this resulted in awarding of ISO 9001 version 2000 certification,
NF certification and the creation of partnerships with four companies
in Algeria, Tunisia, Turkey and Poland and, even more important,
accreditation as A series supplier at Gaz de France and its numerous
sites worldwide.
From 1949 to-date, various changes have taken place at this French
company, transforming it from a small artisan firm with initially 5
persons into a company of international scope with a team of 76
employees and a turnover expected to be in the region of Euro 13
mln at the end of 2012.

Tutto ci viene condotto e supervisionato da Bernard Schlick, nel rispet-
to e nella consapevolezza di essere soci di minoranza e con la ferma
volont di non voler rompere gli equilibri societari.
Tutto ci che accade dal 2009 ad Agosto 2012 storia passata che porta
con s avvenimenti che reputo essere di scarso interesse per il lettore
di questo breve articolo. Ci che parla di nuovo e novit ha il sapore
destate. E infatti nellAgosto di questanno che il Gruppo Cavagna
sigla il passaggio del 100% delle quote Mesura dalla famiglia Mann. A
tal proposito, la vecchia propriet, cosi ha commentato lavvenimento,
rivolgendosi ai dipendenti: .le competenze del Gruppo Cavagna,
applicate ed unitamente a quelle di Mesura, permetteranno di poten-
ziare al massimo i differenti dipartimenti delle due Societ, soprattutto
a livello degli acquisti, R&D, industrializzazione e organizzazione com-
merciale. Tutto ci sar fatto nel rispetto della continuit delle azioni
in corso dotando Mesura dei mezzi finanziari necessari per investire
nel miglioramento dei mezzi di produzione, lestensione della gamma
tramite lo sviluppo di nuovi prodotti, per aumentare, attraverso una
migliore competitivit, la presenza di Mesura sul mercato gi acquisito
e poter conquistare delle nuove porzioni del
mercato stessopersonalmente sono molto
contento di poter assistere a questa nuova vita
allinterno della storia di Mesura.
Ma cosa rappresenta Mesura per il Gruppo
Cavagna? Si tratta di una risposta inesauribile in
poche righe, ma per sommi capi posso affermare
che Mesura rappresenti:
La porta dingresso per un mercato, quello
del Gas Naturale, che viaggia parallelamente a quello del GPL ed
in continua espansione grazie alla sempre maggiore metanizza-
zione delle citt;
Un tassello per completare il puzzle che vuole, in un prossimo
futuro, un Gruppo Cavagna capace di offrire ai propri clienti una
gamma di prodotti completi, potendo cosi parlare con le Oil
Companies, passando per gli O.E.M. e finendo con la rete di distri-
buzione al dettaglio;
La possibilit di sinergie con clienti e fornitori di Mesura;
La possibilit di crescere, tutti, confrontandosi con un mercato che
funziona con politiche e modus agendi diversi rispetto a quelli cui
ci hanno abituato i nostri clienti.
La famiglia Cavagna, forte di un positivo rapporto trentennale, ha
deciso di affidare la direzione generale ad una delle persone di punta
del Gruppo, il quale ha contribuito attivamente a far si che Cavagna
diventasse leader mondiale nella fabbricazione di valvole e regolatori
per gas Gpl e gas tecnici: lIng. Bernard Schlick.
Da Agosto ad oggi, numerose attivit di cambiamento sono iniziate in
Mesura. LIng. Schlick sta dando nuova forma al reparto produttivo, al
fine di migliorarne lefficienza e le performances. Una nuova gamma di
regolatori in alluminio sta prendendo vita in questi giorni, grazie allin-
terazione con il dipartimento R&D Corporate, in modo da abbassare i
costi di produzione e rendere Mesura sempre pi competitiva rispetto
alla concorrenza. Anche il dipartimento commerciale ha in corso un
restyling, sulla falsariga della struttura adottata a livello Corporate.
Potrei scrivere ancora molto riguardo questa nuova scommessa ma

Sar un 2013 di certo impegnativo per il Gruppo ed il personale coin-
volto nel progetto Mesura. Tuttavia, vivendo tutto questo da spet-
tatore privilegiato, posso assicurarvi che gli sforzi sin qui fatti e cui
saremo chiamati in futuro, daranno a tutti noi, donne e uomini del
Gruppo Cavagna, enormi soddisfazioni.

The Cavagna Groups initial interest in Mesura dates back to 2008
when the first relations were established in order to improve purcha-
ses of components. For this purpose, Cavagna furnished Mesura with
die castings for forging of the body of the B6 regulator, and the first
shipments were made in mid-2009.
In 2009, Cavagna acquired a 30% interest in Mesura, thus promoting
effective technical-commercial synergy. The operation was conducted
and supervised by Bernard Schlick, in complete respect and aware-
ness of Cavagnas position as minority shareholders and with the firm
intention of maintaining equilibrium between the two companies.
Everything that happened between 2009 and August 2012 is now
past history involving events that I consider are of little interest to
the reader of this short article. Summer is the season that brings new
events and new beginnings. In fact, in August this year, the Cavagna
Group concluded the transfer of 100% of Mesura shares by the Mann
family. Addressing employees, the former owners commented on
the event as follows: .the capabilities of the Cavagna Group,
applied and combined with those of Mesura, will promote maximum
optimisation and reinforcement of the various
departments of the two companies, in parti-
cular as regards Purchasing, R&D, industrialisa-
tion and sales organization. Every step will be
taken to assure continuity of current actions,
providing Mesura with the financial means
necessary to invest in improvement of produc-
tion equipment, extension of its range through
the development of new products, to reinfor-
ce Mesuras presence on the market already
acquired, through improved competitiveness, and the possibility of
capturing significant market shares personally, I am very pleased
to be able to witness this new period of life in the history of Mesura.
However what does Mesura represent for the Cavagna Group? This
cannot be summed up in a few lines but, briefly, it can be said that
Mesura represents:
a gateway to the Natural Gas market which runs in parallel with
that of LPG and continues to expand, driven by the conversion
of cities to natural gas;
a piece of a puzzle that, in the near future, will allow the Cavagna
Group to offer its customers a complete product range, thus
dealing directly with Oil Companies, passing through OEMs and
up to and including the retail distribution network;
the possibility of forging synergies with Mesura customers and
suppliers;
the possibility of growth for all involved, competing on a market
characterised by different policies and methods of operation
from those normally adopted with our customers.
The Cavagna family, in view of a strong, positive relationship of thirty
years, has decided to entrust general management to a leading per-
son of the Group who has played an active role in propelling Cavagna
to a position as world leader in the manufacture of LPG and technical
gas valves and regulators: Ing. Bernard Schlick.
From August to-date, numerous changes have been introduced at
Mesura. Ing. Schlick is revamping the production department in order
to improve efficiency and performance. A new range of aluminium
regulators is currently taking shape based on interaction with the
Corporate R&D department in order to trim production costs and
improve Mesuras competiveness in relation to main competitors. The
sales department is also being restyled along the lines of the structure
adopted at Corporate level.
There still remains great deal to say about this new challenge but I
prefer that readers appreciate all that has been achieved, consulting

2013 promises to be a year of considerable commitment for the Group
and personnel involved in the Mesura project. However, viewing all
this as a privileged spectator, I can assure you that efforts made so far
and those that may be necessary in the future will be a source of great

Progetto Iraq: verso la conclusione dei lavori del primo impianto

Nel precedente numero di Gas Review era stato descritto il lavoro svolto
per la preparazione e la spedizione del materiale necessario allallesti-
mento di tre impianti per la riparazione e ricondizionamento di bombo-
le per GPL ad uso domestico, secondo quanto definito dal contratto con
la Societ Ministeriale Irachena, Gas Filling Company.
I tre impianti sono destinati a coprire il fabbisogno nazionale, andando
a servire tre aree geografiche differenti: area Nord grazie al sito di Al
Aleel (Mosul), area Centro grazie al sito di Al Rusafa (Baghdad) e area
Sud grazie al sito di Al Nassirya (Nassirya).
Nel corso dell anno 2011, Gas Filling Company ha progressivamente
avviato i lavori edili per la costruzione dei capannoni e degli uffici
destinati ad ospitare nei tre siti gli impianti forniti da Cavagna Group
Engineering.
Nei primi mesi del 2012, una volta terminate le opere civili per lo sta-
bilimento di Al Rusafa (Baghdad), si dato avvio allinstallazione degli
impianti di servizio per la fornitura di energia elettrica, aria compressa,

acqua, illuminazione e GPL allinterno del capannone, nonch allinstal-
lazione allesterno del capannone delle necessarie unit di raffresca-
mento e di aspirazione fumi.
Una volta avviate queste attivit relative agli impianti di servizio, il team
dei supervisori di Cavagna Group Engineering si occupato di coor-
dinare linstallazione dei macchinari necessari per il processo di ripa-
razione e revisione delle bombole che verranno processate allinterno
dellimpianto, fase che si conclusa nel mese di Luglio.
Successivamente, alla fine di Settembre, sono state avviate le attivit di
calibrazione e programmazione delle componenti elettroniche e pneu-
matiche dei diversi macchinari, in modo da finalizzare linstallazione dei
macchinari con il loro avviamento ed avvio alla produzione.
Negli ultimi mesi del 2012, stato poi previsto di procedere con il test
ed il training del personale locale, che sar poi il diretto utilizzatore dei
macchinari installati da Cavagna Group Engineering.
In circa 6 mesi di attivit in Iraq sono stati impiegati circa 15 tecnici
supervisori con competenze meccaniche ed elettroniche diverse che si
sono alternati durante le diverse fasi.
Per superare le difficolt di comunicazione, Cavagna Group Engineering
ha potuto contare sullausilio di un capo-supervisore italiano ma di
lingua madre araba.
Il servizio di sicurezza per gli spostamenti giornalieri per raggiungere il
cantiere ed allinterno del cantiere stesso stato prestato direttamente
da membri dellEsercito Iracheno, al fine di garantire la migliore garan-
zia per i supervisori italiani.
Per lanno 2013 sono previste ulteriori attivit in Iraq: oltre a prose-
guire con il completamento delle attivit nel primo sito di Al Rusafa
(Baghdad), previsto lavvio delle attivit di installazione del secondo
sito presso Al Aleel (Mosul), che stato possibile visitare nel mese di
Luglio 2012 e che ha terminato le opere civile a fine Ottobre 2012.

The work carried out to prepare and ship the material necessary to
set up the three plants for domestic LPG cylinder repair and recon-
ditioning, as defined by the contract with the Iraqi MoO Gas Filling
Company, was already described in the previous number of Gas
Review.
The three plants, intended to cover national requirements, serve three
different geographical areas: the North via the Aleel (Mosul) site, the
Centre via the Rusafa (Baghdad) site and the South via the Al Nassirya
(Nassirya) site.
During 2011, Gas Filling Company gradually initiated the building
works for construction of the industrial sheds and offices intended to
house the Cavagna Group Engineering plants at the three sites.
Completion in early 2012 of civil engineering works for the Rusafa
(Baghdad) plant marked the start of installation of utility systems for
the supply of electric energy, compressed air, water, lighting and LPG
inside the shed and also installation outside this of the necessary air
exchange and fume extraction units.
Following the start of plant utility system activities, the Cavagna
Group Engineering team of supervisors coordinated installation of the
machinery necessary for repair and overhaul of the cylinders, which
will be processed inside the plant.
This phase

machinery in order to finalise installation of the machinery, with com-
missioning of this and start of production.
Testing and training of local personnel who will be the direct users of
the machinery installed by Cavagna Group Engineering is scheduled
for the closing months of 2012.
The around 6 months of activity in Iraq involved some 15 technicians
supervisors with different mechanical and electronic skills who alter-
nated with each other during the various phases.
To overcome communication difficulties, Cavagna Group Engineering
was able to rely on the assistance of an Italian chief-supervisor whose
mother tongue is Arabic.
The security service for daily travel to the site and inside this was
furnished directly by members of the Iraqi Army in order to guarantee
maximum safety of Italian supervisors.
Further activities are planned in Iraq during 2013: in addition to
continuing completion of the activities at the first site of Al Rusafa
(Baghdad), installation activities will start at the second site at Al Aleel
(Mosul) which it was possible to visit in July 2012 and where civil engi-
neering works were completed at the end of October 2012.

La WLPGA (Associazione Mondiale del GPL) con sede a Parigi, oggi

Siamo orgogliosi della lunga e proficua collaborazione con il Gruppo
Cavagna che tra gli Associati pi attivi dellOrganizzazione.
La WLPGA mira a incrementare la visibilit globale del GPL attraverso
attivit di comunicazione, azioni di lobby e diverse campagne di pro-
mozione. Una iniziativa recente stata il lancio del progetto COOKING
FOR LIFE. La campagna quinquennale si aperta nel Settembre 2012
durante il Forum Mondiale di Bali, Indonesia. Il progetto vuole inco-
raggiare lutilizzo del GPL nei paesi in via di sviluppo. Proprio in questi
paesi oggi, luso dei combustibili tradizionali come legna e carbone,
sono causa di7,2%molti problemi di salute legati allinquinamento dellaria
allinterno delle unit abitative. 8,8%
Tre miliardi di persone utilizzano i cosiddetti combustibili tradizionali
legna, carbone, carbonella o sterco essicato di animali - per cucinare su
fornelli antiquati o fuochi allaperto. Cucinare in questo modo tradizio-
nale ha gravi conseguenze sulla salute: attualmente, nei paesi in via di
sviluppo, almeno due milioni di persone muoiono ogni anno a causa di
malattie derivanti dallemissione di particolato prodotto dai tradizionali
carburanti utilizzati per la cottura. Linquinamento dellaria domestica
provoca infezioni alle vie respiratorie, polmoniti, cancro ai polmoni,
malnutrizione, nascite sottopeso e altro. E considerata la decima tra le
principali cause di morte evitabile nel mondo e tra le cause ambientali
di morte seconda solo alle malattie dovute alla contaminazione delle
acque.
Si registrano ogni anno pi morti premature causate dallinquinamento
dellaria domestica che quelle per malaria, tubercolosi o da virus HIV/
AIDs. Tuttavia finora non stata data la giusta importanza a questo pro-
blema rispetto allimpegno profuso per la cura e la prevenzione delle
altre malattie sopra menzionate.
Il GPL rappresenta una soluzione valida perch una fonte di ener-
gia eccezionale che pu essere impiegata ovunque. La campagna
COOKING FOR LIFE mira a spingere un miliardo di persone a sostituire,
entro il 2030, il metodo attuale di cucinare, dannoso per la salute, con
il GPL decisamente pi pulito. Tale cambiamento porterebbe nei paesi
in via di sviluppo enormi benefici, non solo da un punto di vista sociale,
ma anche economico: prevenire 500.000 morti allanno, per lo pi tra
donne e bambini, a causa dellesposizione diretta alle emissioni nocive
dei fuochi di cottura con legna e combustibili anche pi inquinanti;
conservare 2,4 milioni di ettari di foreste, corrispondenti alla superficie

The World LP Gas Association (WLPGA), based in Paris, France, is the
authoritative global voice for the LP Gas industry and represents all its
various sectors. The WLPGA is proud to have an excellent long standing
relationship with Cavagna Group who are a valued and active member
of the Association.
The goal of the WLPGA is to significantly increase worldwide awareness
about LP Gas through outreach, lobbying and a broad range of com-
munication activities. One of the new initiatives and target areas for
communications and development for the WLPGA is the debut of the
COOKING FOR LIFE. The five-year campaign was launched in September
2012 during the9,5%World LP Gas Forum in Bali, Indonesia. COOKING FOR
LIFE aims to encourage the uptake of LP Gas in developing countries
that are deeply affected by indoor air8,5%
pollution from cooking with tradi-
tional fuels, such as wood and charcoal.
Three billion people rely on traditional fuels - wood, coal, charcoal or
animal waste - for cooking on antiquated stoves or open fires. Cooking
the traditional way has dire consequences on health: at least two million
people die each year from illnesses brought on by indoor air pollution
in developing countries. Indoor air pollution causes respiratory infec-
tions, pulmonary disease, lung cancer, malnutrition, low birth weight,
and other conditions. It is the tenth leading cause of avoidable deaths
worldwide and in environmental causes of death is second only to con-
taminated waterborne diseases.
There are more premature deaths every year from indoor air pollution
than from malaria, tuberculosis, or HIV/AIDs. Yet the issue has not had
the same urgency and commitment behind it as these other diseases.
Until now, that is.
One solution is LP Gas, an exceptional energy that can be used virtually
anywhere. The COOKING FOR LIFE campaign aims to transition one
billion people from cooking with traditional fuels to cleaner burning
LP Gas by 2030. Such a shift would bring huge social and economic
benefits to developing countries, including: preventing 500,000 deaths
per year, mostly women and children, from toxic exposure to cooking
fires with wood and dirtier fuels; 2.4 million hectares of forest land con-
served, more than the rainforest lost in the Brazilian Amazon in 2005;
and EUR100 billion in economic output through time-saving modern
cooking.
The WLPGA will achieve this by mobilizing support from a wide range
of governments, public, private and non-profit institutions to create
the policies and build the infrastructure to expand the use of LP Gas.

La presenza commerciale del Gruppo in Cina ha ormai una lunga
storia, iniziata tramite semplici esportazioni, poi attraverso un ufficio
commerciale a Shanghai che seguisse il mercato interno. In seguito,
quando i produttori di applicazioni a gas hanno iniziato a spostare
le produzioni in Cina, si e avvertita la necessita di avere una presen-
za piu stabile per meglio gestire la logistica e accorciare i tempi di
consegna ai clienti. Inizialmente si e gestito un magazzino nella zona
franca di Zhuhai e poi, quando i volumi sono aumentati, la Reca ha
aperto unazienda produttiva a Zhongshan, nel cuore della provincia
manufatturiera del Guangdong, a due passi da Hong Kong e Canton.
I primi passi dellindustralizzazione e della produzione sono stati da
Glen Karle, general manager con una lunga esperienza produttiva in
Cavagna North America e deceduto prematuramente nellestate 2008,
e da Francesca Cavalli e Federico Auddino, rispettivamente sulla parte
societaria/contabile e nelle vendite/marketing.
Dapprima focalizzata alla produzione dei regolatori propano per il mer-
cato americano, lazienda ha poi via via allargato la gamma che ormai
copre la richiesta di diverse decine di paesi, Europa, Medio Oriente,

Over the years, the Group has gradually built a strong commercial
presence in China, restricted initially to export operations and follo-
wed, subsequently, by setting up of a commercial office in Shanghai
to follow the internal market. When gas applications providers started
to shift production to China, the Group decided that a more stable
presence was necessary in order to improve management of logistics
and to shorten delivery times to customers. After initially managing
a warehouse in the Free Trade Zone of Zhuhai, as volumes increased,
Reca opened a production unit at Zhongshan, in the heart of the
province of Guangdong, the manufacturing hub of the country and
within easy reach of Hong Kong and Canton. The first steps in indu-
strialisation and manufacturing were taken by Glen Karle, General
Manager with long-term production experience at Cavagna North
America, before his untimely death in the Summer of 2008, and by
Francesca Cavalli and Federico Auddino, who followed up corporate/
accounting and sales/marketing aspects respectively.
The company, focussed initially on the production of propane regu-
lators for the American market, gradually extended its range which
now covers the requirements of some tens of countries, Europe, the
Middle East, South Africa, Australia, with in some cases direct exports
but in particular through Chinese BBQ and cooker manufacturers. Its
firm presence in China has allowed the regulators division to maintain
its role as global leader. As, at the moment, Zhongshan Cavagna is the
only company in China with a more or less complete product range,
comprising local production and a warehouse of stocks of products
made in Italy, it has been selected by sector lead companies such as
Weber, Landmann, Enders, Outdoorchef, De Longhi, Rothemberger to
support their global growth

The Chinese economy has recently shown signs of slowing under
the impact of strong increases in inflation rates and the decline in
demand from Western countries, first and foremost Europe. The
Chinese Government will be faced with the challenge of boosting
domestic demand and of investing in infrastructures to maintain the
countrys growth rate. This will be an occasion for the introduction of
new environmental policies and more wide-scale use of clean fuels.
On the other hand, China will be forced to adopt more stringent,
effective safety and consumer protection policies in many sectors,
last but not least the gas sector where the still few and far between
regulations complying with international standards are often only
partially applied or simply on paper. This will be the real opportunity

Il programma di conversione al GPL in Indonesia
The LPG Conversion Programme in Indonesia
La WLPGA ha recentemente avviato un progetto in collaborazione
con le Nazioni Unite denominato Cooking for Life per favorire
il passaggio dai combustibili inquinanti attualmente utilizzati per
la cottura domestica al GPL, combustibile pi ecologico e pulito.
Sono state promosse diverse iniziative a livello mondiale per pro-
muovere lutilizzo del GPL nelle applicazioni domestiche.
Una di queste iniziative partita in Indonesia, dove il recente
programma del governo per promuovere tra la popolazione la
conversione dallutilizzo di cherosene al GPL,
ha attirato molta attenzione. Tutto ci dovuto
alla vastit del progetto stesso, allobiettivo
molto ambizioso e al successo che loperazio-
ne ha ottenuto.
Nel 2007 lIndonesia ha intrapreso questo
importante progetto per portare, entro cin-
que anni, il GPL in pi di 50 milioni di case,
sostituendolo al kerosene come combustibile
utilizzato per cucinare.
Per decenni il cherosene stato finanziato
dal governo Indonesiano come combustibile
principale per le famiglie e il mercato ittico.
Tuttavia, con laumento della popolazione e
laumento del prezzo del petrolio, il sistema di
sponsorizzazione ha gravato troppo sul bilan-
cio del governo. Nel 2004 il cherosene stato
utilizzato giornalmente da 48 su 52 milioni
di famiglie in gran parte per cucinare con un
costo medio mensile inferiore a 150 dollari.
I motivi per scegliere il GPL rispetto al chero-
sene sono diversi:
Il GPL meno inquinante;
Il GPL riduce il rischio di malattie derivanti dalle emissioni
prodotte durante lutilizzo dei combustibili tradizionali usati
per la cottura;
Il GPL, rispetto alle biomasse e il carbone, riduce in modo signi-
ficativo le emissioni di inquinanti;
Luso del GPL contribuisce alla riduzione della deforestazione.
Prendendo in considerazione le esperienze delle politiche di sov-
venzione attuati dai paesi vicini come la Thailandia e la Malesia e la
bont delle infrastrutture legate al mercato del GPL in Indonesia, il
governo decise di lanciare nel 2007 il programma di passaggio. Tale
programma, a seguito di uno studio di fattibilit fu implementata
da Pertamina progressivamente in alcune aree della citt di Jakarta.
Lobiettivo iniziale del programma era quello di convertire a livello
nazionale 42 milioni di famiglie e microimprese. Cifra che fu succes-
sivamente incrementata a 54-58 milioni di unit. Tutti i cittadini che
soddisfavano i requisiti del programma avrebbero avuto il diritto di
ricevere gratuitamente il pacchetto iniziale, che consisteva in una
bombola GPL da 3 kg, un primo riempimento, un fornello a brucia-
tore singolo ed un kit tubo e regolatore.

The WLPGA has recently embarked on a project with the UN called
Cooking for Life to encourage the switch from these high polluting
fuels used for domestic cooking to the clean burning LP Gas.
There have been several initiatives around the world to encourage the
use of LP Gas in domestic applications.
In Indonesia, one of these initiatives involved a recent government
program related to the switchover from kerosene to LP Gas. The pro-
gram attracted quite a lot of attention due to the importance of the
project, the very ambitious target and ultima-
tely its successful implementation.
In 2007 Indonesia undertook this massive ener-
gy program to convert, over a time span of five
years, its primary cooking fuel from kerosene
to LP Gas in more than 50 million households.
Kerosene, the main fuel for households and
fisheries, for decades had been subsidized by
the Indonesian Government. However, due to
population growth and increasing oil prices,
this subsidy became a huge burden for the
government.
In 2004 kerosene was consumed by 48 of 52
million households. The majority of households
used it for daily cooking. Most had a low-to-
medium expense, under USD 150 per month.
The choice of opting for LPG as a replacement
fuel to Kerosene are various:
LPG is cleaner burning compared to
kerosene;
LPG prevents illnesses deriving from
the use of traditional fuels during indoor use particularly
among the lower income classes;
LPG, when used for cooking on traditional stoves, compared
to solid fuels, such as biomass and coal, emits significant lower
amounts of greenhouse-related pollutants;
LPG reduces deforestation.
Taking into account the subsidiary policy experiences of neighborho-
od countries, such as Thailand and Malaysia, and thanks to a more
developed LPG infrastructure in Indonesia, the government decided in
2007 to launch the conversion programme.
Following a feasibility study and a one-month market trial carried out
by Pertamina in areas of Jakarta, the program was gradually imple-
mented over a period of several years.
The initial program goal was to convert 42 million households and
micro businesses nation wide. Later the target was extended to 54-58
million units. People meeting the program requirements would benefit
from a free Initial Package, consisting of a 3 kg LP Gas cylinder, a first
fill, and a cooking kit consisting of a one-burner cooking stove, and a
hose regulator kit. The kerosene conversion project was carried out
only in those areas in which the conversion packages were distributed.
The withdrawal was accomplished by gradually replacing the kerosene

La conversione al GPL fu portata a termine solo in quelle aree
dove sono stati distribuiti i pacchetti di conversione. Il ritiro stato
effettuato gradualmente sostituendo la catena di fornitura del
cherosene. A fine 2008, erano gi stati distribuiti 19 milioni di kits
di conversione. Nel 2009, Pertamina ne distribuisce altri 24 milioni.
Ulteriori 10 milioni di kits si aggiungono nel periodo tra il 2010 e
2011. Alla fine del programma previsto un aumento del consumo
del GPL di 4 5 volte rispetto alle previsioni inizialmente ipotizzate
da Pertamina. Tutto ci ha richiesto una pianificazione e un rapi-
do sviluppo delle infrastrutture su larga scala. A met del 2012, il
programma stato attuato in 23 province Indonesiane, con oltre
53.900.000 kits di conversione forniti alla popolazione. In meno di
6 anni dallinizio del programma, Pertamina ha gi distribuito i kit
iniziali a quasi 54 milioni di famiglie e piccole-medie imprese, vale a
dire, il 93% del target prefissato. Nel 2012 si prevede che il risparmio
relativo alle politiche di sovvenzione del governo ammonter 6,9
miliardi di dollari. Numerosi sondaggi sulliniziativa del pacchetto
iniziale bombola GPL da 3 Kg furono realizzati per vedere dove
apportare delle eventuali migliorie. La maggioranza degli intervista-
ti ha risposto in maniera positiva alliniziativa, evidenziando i benefi-
ci ottenuti come un sistema di cottura pi rapido, locali pi puliti, e
soprattutto una riduzione di circa il 30% dei costi del combustibile
usato per cucinare. Grazie al successo e al rapido sviluppo del pro-
gramma, il governo ha chiesto ai produttori locali di bombole di
aumentare la capacit produttiva. Il numero di produttori locali, pari
a 13 nel 2006 (prima del programma), aumentato a 67 nel 2012,
con un conseguente eccesso di capacit produttiva delle bombole.
Tutto ci ha avuto un impatto negativo sul mercato a causa del
gran numero di bombole illegali in circolazione. Queste bombole
sono difficili da controllare, una volta entrati nel sistema di ricarica
di GPL. Il Gruppo Cavagna ha partecipato attivamente in questo
progetto, fornendo a Pertamina pi di 5 milioni di valvole (quasi
il 10% del fabbisogno totale). Ora Pertamina deve mettere in atto
un programma di ricondizionamento per le bombole da 3Kg che
sono state introdotte sul mercato anni fa. Continueremo a fornire il
nostro know-how, il servizio e lelevata qualit dei nostri prodotti a
Pertamina e alla gran parte della popolazione indonesiana.

supply chain. By the end of 2008, 19 million conversion packages were
distributed. By 2009, Pertamina had distributed 24 million. In 2010-
2011, an additional 10 million packages were on the market.
Once the programme is finalized Pertamina forecasts that the LP Gas
sales volume will increase up to 4 to 5 times, compared to the initial
planning. The project obviously required planning and a large scale
infrastructure development. The program this year, up and till today,
has already been implemented in 23 provinces throughout Indonesia,
with 53.9 million conversion packages supplied to the population.
Since implementation of the program six years ago, Pertamina
has distributed initial packages to almost 54 million households
and small-medium business, i.e., 93% of the target. By 2012 the
governments savings on the subsidy program amounted to 6.9 billion
US dollars. Surveys conducted to determine consumer satisfaction
of the 3 kg LP Gas initial package were carried out to understand
were improvements could be made. The majority of the interviewees
pointed out benefits such as faster cooking, cleaner kitchens, and
most importantly, and a cut of their cooking fuel expenses by appro-
ximately 30%. Thanks to the rapid development of the program, the
government addressed the local cylinder manufacturer market to
increase production capacity.
The number of local manufacturers, which were only 13 in 2006 (befo-
re the program), increased to 67 in 2012, thus resulting in an excess
cylinder production capacity. This has impacted the market negatively,
thus resulting in the circulation of a large number of illegal cylinders
on the market. These illegal cylinders are difficult to control once they
have entered the LP Gas refilling system. Cavagna Group actively parti-
cipated in this project, supplying Pertamina with more than five million
valves (almost 10% of the total quantity). Today Pertamina must initiate
a reconditioning program for the huge quantity of 3Kg cylinders which
were introduced in the market years ago. We are looking forward to

Pertamina and to the majority of the Indonesian population.

Quando si pensa allAmerica Latina, e giusto Immaginarla come
un insieme di stati che, da nord a sud, si snodano tra Messico ed
Argentina. Questi paesi sono accomunati da ununica lingua - lo
spagnolo - fatta eccezione per il Brasile, dove la lingua ufficiale
il portoghese.
Sono per paesi assai diversi tra loro per cultura e tradizioni, mor-
fologia del territorio, posizione geografica, situazione politica ed
economica, nonch approccio al business e potere dacquisto.
Linsieme di questi fattori fa si che le potenzialit di ciascun paese e
quindi le conseguenti opportunit che rappresentano per il Gruppo
Cavagna, siano molto differenti da stato a stato.
Malgrado questa diversit, tali paesi presentano un minimo comu-
ne denominatore: da anni registrano tassi di crescita economica
secondi solo ad alcuni stati del continente asiatico e ben superiori
a quelli riscontrati nelle economie mature di Europa, Stati Uniti e
Giappone. Un esempio concreto di questo trend positivo proprio
il Brasile, che ha attualmente superato sia lItalia che lInghilterra
nella classifica degli stati per il loro PIL.
Tuttavia, sia per gli investitori esteri che per le aziende esporta-
trici come il Gruppo Cavagna, importante considerare fattori
come il protezionismo, la volatilit cambiaria, linstabilit politica
e la diseguaglianza sociale, elementi che concorrono a formare il
rischio paese, elevato nella maggioranza degli stati di centro e
sud America.
Le esportazioni del Gruppo Cavagna in America Latina - cosi come
la presenza attraverso sedi produttive locali - notevolmente
aumentata. Vi sono 3 filiali produttive: Cile, Colombia e Venezuela;
ed una rete distributiva che copre tutti i paesi e che commercializza
sia prodotti Made in Italy, sia quelli fabbricati in loco.
Nel comparto valvole per gas industriali, la crescita stata a doppia
cifra con un consolidamento della nostra quota di mercato in tutti i
paesi. Per quanto riguarda le valvole destinate al settore medicale,
abbiamo introdotto le prime migliaia di Viproxy sul mercato. Le
aspettative per lanno che sta per concludersi erano maggiori, ma
la crescita sperata solo rimandata al 2013.
Nel comparto GPL, settore dove abbiamo una forte concorrenza
locale nei vari paesi, il 2012 si dimostrato un anno con parecchie
insidie, tra cui la svalutazione del Real Brasiliano e il divieto alle
importazioni di valvole imposto tramite un decreto legge del gover-
no argentino. In Peru e Colombia sono inoltre terminati Programmi
governativi volti allo sviluppo ed alla riorganizzazione del settore.
Per quanto riguarda le valvole per metano auto, dove i poten-
ziali mercati sono Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brasile e
Argentina; abbiamo effettuato le prime vendite di valvole bombola
e di carica in Colombia, Venezuela e Peru.
Lanno 2012 ci ha inoltre visto partecipi di tre eventi fieristici di rile-
vanza internazionale: la Hospitalar a Sao Paolo per il settore medi-
cale, la Iberoamericana a Panama per il segmento GPL ed infine la
NGV Global a Citt del Messico, dove abbiamo esposto la gamma
prodotti per metano da autotrazione.

Latin America can rightly be considered a set of countries that, from
North to South, untwine between Mexico and Argentina.
These countries share the same language, Spanish, except for Brazil
where the official language is Portuguese.
However, they differ considerable as regards culture and traditions,
morphology of the territory, geographical position, economic and
political situation, and also approach to business and purchasing
power.
Taken together, these factors determine the potential of each country,
which differs considerably, and therefore the consequent opportuni-
ties they represent for the Cavagna Group.
Despite this diversity, these countries are characterised by a mini-
mum common denominator: for years, they have achieved economic
growth rates that are second only to various countries of the Asian
continent and well above those of the mature economies of Europe,
the USA and Japan.
Brazil, which has currently overtaken England in the classification of
countries according to GDP, is an effective example of this positive
trend.
However, foreign investors and export companies such as Cavagna
Group must give due consideration to factors such as protectionism,
volatile exchange rates, political instability and social inequality, ele-
ments that contribute to determining country risk that is high in
most Central and South American countries.
Cavagna Groups exports to Latin America and also its presence
through local manufacturing sites have increased considerably. It
has 3 manufacturing sites located in Chile, Colombia and Venezuela
and a distribution network covering all the countries which sells both
products Made in Italy and also local products.
The valves for industrial gases sector has reported double-digit
growth, consolidating our market share in all the countries.
As regards valves for the medical sector, we have launched the first
thousand Viproxy valves on the market. Our forecasts for the year now
ending were higher but the growth desired has only been postponed
to 2013.
In the LPG sector, characterised by strong local competition in
the various countries, 2012 proved to be year beset by various
pitfalls, including devaluation of the Brazilian Real and the ban on
imports of valves imposed by a Decree of the Argentine Government.
Government Programs for the development and reorganization of the
sector have also ended in Peru and Colombia.
As regards auto natural gas valves, with potential markets in Colombia,
Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil and Argentina, we have completed the
first sales of cylinder and filling valves in Colombia, Venezuela and
Peru.
In 2012, Cavagna Group participated in three industrial fairs of inter-
national scope: the Hospitalar at Sao Paolo for the medical sector, the
Iberoamericana in Panama for the LPG segment and the NGV Global
at Mexico City where we exhibited our product range for natural gas
powered vehicles.

Cosa ci riserva il 2013?
Ovviamente pensare positivo dobbligo, ma con una dose di
realismo, visto che la crisi economica globale non lascia indenne
nemmeno lAmerica Latina.
Le opportunit di crescita verranno sicuramente dal Brasile, dove
la nostra quota di mercato sul GPL molto bassa ed abbiamo di
conseguenza buone possibilit di crescita sia con prodotti di valore
aggiunto che con le valvole e regolatori bombola e per serbatoi.
Per gli altri paesi, prevediamo tuttavia un mantenimento delle
quote di mercato attuali per le valvole bombola per gpl.
Grazie ad una maggior presenza sul territorio ed allunificazione
della rete distributiva della divisione valvole e di quella regolatori,
prevediamo di poter aumentare le vendite di regolatori GPL e di
tutti i nostri prodotti destinati ai serbatoi. Lidea di offrire
ai nostri distributori e clienti finali un pacchetto prodotti
molto pi completo, aumentando i rispettivi poteri con-
trattuali nei confronti del mercato.
Continuer invece la crescita di prodotti destinati al
mercato dei gas medicali, dove ci sono le premesse
perch nel 2013 le vendite aumentino soprattutto
sul mercato Brasiliano, Messicano e Colombiano.
Nonostante la nostra ferma convinzione delle
potenzialit del nostro prodotto di spicco: la
Viproxy, i volumi di vendita cresceranno nella
misura in cui il mercato sviluppi la necessit di
passare dalla tecnologia tradizionale: quella
con valvola e regolatore separati, ad una val-
vola con regolatore integrato.
Per quanto riguarda le valvole per gas indu-
striali prevediamo un consolidamento delle
quote di mercato acquisite, con una crescita
di qualche punto percentuale soprattutto
sul mercato Brasiliano.
Dalle valvole per metano auto, ci aspettia-
mo in primis una crescita importante in
Colombia e Venezuela e a seguire in Peru,
Bolivia e Brasile.

What can we expect in 2013?
Obviously, positive thinking is essential but also a good dose of rea-
lism seeing that the global economic crisis has not spared even Latin
America.
Growth opportunities will certainly come from Brazil where our market
share on LPG is very low and, therefore, we have good possibilities of
growth with both value added products and cylinder and tank valves
and regulators.
In the other countries, we expect to maintain our current market sha-
res for LPG cylinder valves.
Reinforcing our presence in the territory and uniting the distribution
network of the valves and regulator divisions, we expect to increase
sales of LPG regulators and of all our tank products. Our idea is to offer
our distributors and end customers a more complete product
package, improving their respective bargaining power with
regard to the market.
On the other hand, we expect continuing growth of
products for the medical gases market where the
assumptions exist for an increase in sales in 2013, in
particular on the Brazilian, Mexican and Colombian
markets. Although we are firmly convinced of the
potential of our flagship product, i.e. the Viproxy
valve, sales volumes will grow to the extent to
which the market develops the need to move
from conventional technology, i.e. with separate
valve and regulator, towards a valve with inte-
grated regulator.
As regards valves for industrial gases, we expect
to consolidate market shares already acquired
with a few percentage point increases in parti-
cular on the Brazilian market.
For natural gas valves, we expect first and
foremost major growth in Colombia and
Venezuela followed by Peru, Bolivia and
Brazil.

The Lean Distribution Project
Dopo aver implementato varie tecniche lean allinterno dei reparti
produttivi Omeca quali il Kanban, la misura dellindice di rotazione del
magazzino, il TEO Tempo Attraversamento dellOrdine, lOEE Overall
Equipment Effectivness, le cinque S, la misura della puntualit di con-
segna, etc., e perseguendo lottica del kaizen, ovvero del miglioramento
continuo, Cavagna Group ha deciso di estendere anche sulle politiche
di distribuzione la filosofia snella, cercando di migliorare quindi le
attuali relazioni e modalit di gestione con le filiali distributive.
La prima ad essere stata coinvolta nel progetto lean distribution
stata Cavagna UK. Per lean distribution si intende il monitoraggio dei
flussi di informazione fra casa madre e filiale, avente lo scopo di snellire
i processi di approvvigionamento dellazienda di distribuzione.
Calandoci nellaspetto pratico del progetto, si sono dapprima disegnate
le mappe del valore del processo distributivo attuale e futuro con lin-
tento di verificare i tempi necessari alla gestione dellordine e ad indi-
viduare i passaggi a valore aggiunto per il cliente; si poi passati ad
analizzare accuratamente lo stato del magazzino della filiale e lindice di
rotazione per ogni prodotto (che consiste nel rapporto tra il valore esi-

After adopting various lean manufacturing techniques at Omeca pro-
duction units, such as Kanban, measurement of order lead time, Overall
Equipment Effectiveness, the five S, measurement of punctual delivery,
etc., and pursuing a kaizen approach i.e. continuous improvement,
Cavagna Group has decided to extend application of lean philosophy
also to distribution policies in order to improve current relations and
management methods with distribution centres.
Cavagna UK was the first to be involved in the lean distribution project,
i.e. monitoring of information flows between the parent company and
centre with the aim of streamlining distribution centre procurement
processes.
On a more practical front, first of all the current state and future state
value stream maps of the distribution process were constructed in order
to verify the times involved in managing the order and to identify any
steps with value added for the customer. This was followed by a detai-
led analysis of the state of the warehouse of the centre and the turnover
ratio of each product (i.e. the ratio between the average value of stock
in a certain period of time, the so-called average inventory value, and
the value of goods sold in the same period), identifying all items with
a higher turn rate. Products for which there is a stable demand during
the year were then identified, the so-called green stream codes not
affected by unforeseeable peaks or sudden drops in demand but which
are sold continuously by the centre and which, therefore, lend themsel-
ves to application of kanban logic (literally tag, which consists in a
visual re-order system in which inventory
is replenished only in the case of effective
product depletion).
To launch the project (initiated in December
2011 and which came on stream in May this
year), ten green stream codes were selected
and, to-date, 21 codes are already controlled.
All these items are monitored on a weekly
by Cavagna UK with its sales data. This file
is then analysed by the logistics function of
Omeca which, using specifically-designed formulas, calculates the mini-
mum product stock below which a production order must be inserted
so as to guarantee that the foreign branch is able to furnish a suitable
level of customer service. This aspect also contributes to determining
the level of stocks that must be maintained at the branch.
After establishing the items for which an order must be issued and
subsequently produced according to the lead times of each article, the
commercial function informs the foreign branch of the need to order
specific products. Cavagna UK then sends its own purchase order to the

le attivit in settembre 2012 ed entro fine anno si inizieranno a gestire

do varie complessit rispetto alla prima esperienza:
1. Cavagna North America attualmente ha a disposizione anche
altri magazzini nel territorio degli Stati Uniti e alcuni magazzini
anche presso i clienti; questo richiede un supplemento di analisi
e di attenzione;
2. Presso la filiale in New Jersey attivo un reparto per la modifica
dei nostri prodotti, soprattutto regolatori, che svolge attivit di
sostituzione di alcuni accessori, personalizzazione dei prodotti
ricevuti dalle divisioni produttive e controllo della conformit
dei pezzi;
3. La distanza, anche se potr sembrare un aspetto banale, non aiuta
in questo tipo di progetti. Il tempo necessario ai prodotti per
attraversare lAtlantico ed essere disponibili in CNA una compli-
cazione aggiuntiva al flusso del valore. Iniziando il progetto con
Cavagna North America sono state proposte alcune attivit paral-
lele prontamente accettate da CNA. Fra le altre, il progetto 5S nel
reparto lavorazioni (inteso come quelle attivit riassunte al punto
2 sopra). Una migliore gestione e ordine delle attrezzature, degli
utensili e di tutti gli apparati di produzione, nonch dei materiali
presenti nel reparto, porteranno ulteriori benefici. Il responsabile
dellarea si prontamente messo al lavoro con entusiasmo, que-
sto ad indicare anche la voglia di miglioramento che presente
nel nostro Gruppo.
In conclusione, per riassumere, il progetto della lean distribution oltre
a snellire le dinamiche di approvvigionamento dei centri distributivi,
tende a migliorare le sinergie fra casa madre e filiale che confron-
tandosi sempre pi assiduamente riescono a migliorare da un lato le
performance produttive e dallaltro lo stock di magazzino e il servizio
al cliente.

In this particular case, various complexities were
encountered compared with the first experience:
1. The fact that, at the moment, Cavagna North America also has
other warehouses in the territory of the United States and also at
customers imposes extra analysis and attention;
2. The New Jersey facility comprises a workshop for modification
of our products, in particular regulators, which replaces certain
accessories and customises products received from the manufac-
turing divisions, also verifying component conformity;
3. Although apparently banal, distance does not help in this type of
projects. The time necessary for the products to cross the Atlantic
and be available at CNA further complicates the value stream.
On launching the project with Cavagna North America, various parallel
activities were proposed and promptly accepted by CNA. These inclu-
ded, amongst others, the 5S project in the workshops (i.e. those activi-
ties summed up in point 2 above). Improved management and tidiness
of equipment, tools and all production facilities and also of materials
present in the shop will generate further benefits. The area manager
promptly set to work with enthusiasm, also reflecting the typical will
to improve of our Group.
Summing up, in addition to streamlining distribution centre procu-
rement dynamics, the lean distribution project also aims to improve
synergies between the Parent and branch which, through increasingly
assiduous confrontation, succeed in improving both manufacturing
performance and inventory and customer service.

Grazie al mio esordio nel mondo degli sport acquatici, ho avuto la pos-

Al fine di ridurre la sua impronta ecologica, il Gruppo Cavagna ha intra-
preso una serie di politiche ambientali per la riduzione degli impatti
diretti. Segue una breve descrizione delle strategie pianificate raggrup-
pate nei diversi ambiti dintervento. Il Gruppo Cavagna da anni utilizza
fonti di energia rinnovabile per la minimizzazione delle emissioni di
CO2 e di altri gas climalteranti al fine di ostacolare i cambiamenti clima-
tici, considerati unanimemente tra le sfide ambientali pi importanti
a livello globale, e di ridurre le immissioni di inquinanti in atmosfera.
In particolare, su 440 m2 del tetto del capannone industriale stato
inizialmente installato nel 2007 un generatore fotovoltaico composto
da 375 moduli in silicio monocristallino ad alta efficienza di potenza di
picco pari a 48,75 kWp.
Tale impianto fotovoltaico stato ampiamente potenziato nel 2010,
aumentando la potenza di picco di quasi dieci volte (445,44 kWp),
coprendo una superficie del tetto del capannone industriale pari a
3.080 m2 con 1.856 moduli in silicio mono-cristallino ad alta efficienza.
Lenergia elettrica prodotta annualmente dallimpianto di 441.463
kWh, pari a poco pi del 25% del consumo medio annuo dello stabili-
mento. In termini di tutela ambientale, la produzione da fonte rinnova-
bile di tale quantitativo energetico ha evitato che circa 345 tonnellate di
CO2 fossero immesse ogni anno in atmosfera; ci corrisponde al quanti-
tativo di CO2 assorbita da un bosco di circa 6.500 mq.

Cavagna Group has always considered its environmental commitment
as one of the core principles of the company, seeking product quality
excellence and safety while cutting down to a minimum the related
environmental impact.
Hence, in order to implement effective and active action focused
on environmental protection, besides conducting business in total
compliance with both Italian and Community regulations on the
environment, the Cavagna Group has launched a series of actions
designed to prevent, manage and reduce the environmental impact
that is both directly and indirectly related to the activities performed.
The environmental policies implemented by the company are regu-
larly implemented to achieve ongoing improvements in the results
obtained in the framework of environmental protection, in order to
exploit the latest technologies and good manufacturing practices
available.
Lastly, it must be said that late in 2013 the Omeca and Pergola divi-
sions set the goal to implement an Environment Management System
To reduce its ecological footprint, the Cavagna Group has imple-
mented a series of environmental policies designed to reduce direct
impact. The following is a brief description of the planned strategies,
grouped by field of intervention.
The Cavagna Group has long made use of renewable energy sources
to minimise the emission of CO2 and other gases that affect the cli-
mate in order to prevent climate changes, which are unanimously
deemed as the most crucial global environmental challenges, and to
cut down the release of pollutants into the atmosphere.
In 2007 a photovoltaic generator including 375 high efficiency mono-
crystalline silicon modules with peak wattage of 48.75 kW was initially
installed on 440 m2 roof that covers the industrial facility.
Said photovoltaic plant was extensively reinforced in 2010, increasing
peak wattage by almost ten-fold (445,44 kWp), covering the industrial
facilitys roof surface of 3,080 m2 with 1,856 high efficiency mono-
crystalline silicon modules.
The power yearly generated by the plant is 441,463 kWh, which is little
more than 25% of the mean yearly consumption of the facility.
In terms of environmental protection, production of such a quantity of
energy from a renewable source has avoided about 345 tons of CO2
from being yearly released into the atmosphere, which is the amount
of CO2 absorbed by 6,500 m2 of woodland.

Nel biennio 2011-2012 altre unit produttive del gruppo, in Italia e allestero,
sono state attrezzate con pannelli fotovoltaici che concorrono a potenziare il
quantitativo energetico da fonte rinnovabile .
Lo stabilimento di Ponte S.Marco dotato di un impianto di cogenerazione per
la produzione di energia elettrica da fonte rinnovabile (olio vegetale grezzo), di
potenza nominale pari a 420 kW elettrici e 380 kW termici.
La produzione di circa 3,15 GWh allanno. Dallacqua di raffredda-
mento del motore dellimpianto di cogenerazione, nonch dai fumi
di scarico, viene recuperato calore impiegato come fonte di energia
termica: lacqua che raffredda il motore del cogeneratore, viene usata
per preriscaldare lacqua delle lavatrici per il lavaggio dei pezzi; inoltre,
in inverno, viene usata anche per scaldare lacqua utilizzata dalle caldaie
per il riscaldamento degli interni. Tutti gli impianti di illuminazione dello
stabilimento sono dotati di crepuscolare per il risparmio energetico.

re). Per ridurre gli spostamenti e le
assenze dal posto di lavoro, sono
state istituite in sede una mensa ed
un asilo per i figli dei dipendenti.
Linstallazione di un vaporizzatore
ed impianto di osmosi per acqua
delle lavatrici permette di separare
la parte oleosa dallacqua, con i
seguenti risultati: prima dellistallazione venivano smaltiti circa 50.000
litri allanno di olio mescolato ad acqua, ora vengono smaltiti circa
10.000 litri allanno di solo olio. Lacqua recuperata dal vaporizzatore
viene usata per rabboccare il livello di acqua delle vasche.
Oltre a quanto sopradescritto, il Gruppo Cavagna si avvale di altre
strategie e politiche per ridurre lutilizzo delle risorse. Tra queste, si
sottolineano: politica di riduzione degli imballaggi; riutilizzo e riciclo
degli imballaggi dei fornitori; realizzazione di un circuito dellacqua
emulsionata e recupero del truciolo, che permette di riciclare lacqua,
non contenente batteri, per le lavorazioni. In particolare, i lavori fatti
con lo scopo di mantenere lacqua non contaminata da batteri, hanno
permesso di ridurre da 18 a 7 il numero di cisterne di olio ( da 1.000 litri
cadauna) usate annualmente per la lavorazione.

During 2011-2012 other business units in Italy and abroad installed
solar panel systems thus reducing CO2 emissions. The facility has a
cogeneration plant for power generation from a renewable source
(raw vegetal oil), with nominal power 420 kW (electric) and 380 kW
(thermal).
It produces about 3.15 GWh a year.energy from a renewable source
has avoided about 345 tons of CO2 from being yearly released into
the atmosphere, which is the amount of CO2 absorbed by 6,500 m2
of woodland. From the cogeneration plant motor cooling water and
from exhaust fumes, heat is recovered and used as a source of ther-
mal energy: water that cools the cogenerator motor is channelled to
preheat water used by washing machine to rinse items. Moreover,
in winter, it is also used to warm the water that runs through boilers
employed for internal heating. All the lighting systems of the facility
are fitted with energy saving dimmers. The use of LED lamps is also
being assessed to cut down power consumption. The ecosustainable
transport solution implemented by the Cavagna Group includes 30-35
company vehicles that are rented
to employees. These vehicles are
regularly replaced and serviced (the
mean duration of a contract is 48
months).
The corporate car policy envisa-
ges the possibility of only choo-
sing from models manufactured by
Italian firms, and envisages measu-
res to cut down CO2 emissions (e.g.
engine capacity limit of the cars).
In order to reduce commuting to
and from the workplace and rela-
ted absences, we charter a com-
pany canteen and a nursery school
for our employees children. The
installation of a vaporiser and of an
osmosis plant for washing machine water enables separation of the
oily part of water, with the following results: prior to installation about
50,000 litres of oil mixed with water were disposed of every year; now
about 10,000 litres of only oil are disposed of every year. The water
recovered by the vaporiser is used to top up the water level of tanks.
Besides the above, the Cavagna Group also adopts other strategies
and policies to cut down the use of resources, including: packaging
reduction policy; reutilisation and recycling of packaging sent by
suppliers; creation of water emulsion circuit and recovery of wood
shavings in order to recycle water free of bacteria for processing.
Particularly, work implemented to ensure that water is not contamina-
ted by bacteria has allowed to cut down the number of oil tanks used
yearly for processing from 18 to 7 (1,000 litres each).

fenomeno che ci attanaglia da tempo. A volte,
per, anzich fuggire allestero circolano, rima-
nendo nellambito cisalpino e cammin facendo
arrivano anche a ... Ponte San Marco, dove
vanno a rimpolpare la gi folta schiera di intel-
letti, di cui fortunatamente siamo ben forniti! E
cos Davide e Valentina, due giovani ingegneri
ambientali romani, invece di andare allestero in
cerca di miglior fortuna sono diventati per alcu-
ni mesi due nostri colleghi. Sono loro, infat-
ti, i vincitori della prima edizione del Premio
Amleto Cavagna, a cui hanno partecipato con
il progetto di ricerca dedicato allottimizzazione
del settore impiantistico del gas ed al sostegno
dei ricercatori nel settore delle migliori tecnolo-
gie applicate allo sviluppo sostenibile. In pratica
abbiamo istituito questo premio, dedicato alla
memoria di uno dei padri fondatori del nostro
Gruppo, per approfondire alcuni aspetti legati
allefficienza energetica delle reti di approvvi-
gionamento del gas ed alla riduzione dei costi
di gestione degli edifici gi esistenti. Gli scopi
erano molteplici: capire come ristrutturare al
meglio gli edifici per renderli adatti alle nostre applicazioni a GPL (che
noi abbiamo rinominato Greengear); capire come e quando utilizzare le
nostre Greengear per risparmiare sulle bollette; capire quanto le nostre
Greengear inquinano meno rispetto alle applicazioni tradizionali; capi-
re con quale strategia di marketing posizionare commercialmente le
nostre Greengear sul mercato.
Entro fine anno speriamo, quindi, di essere in grado di comprendere
come inserire i nostri sistemi Greengear in una logica integrale di edifici
efficienti ed automatizzati (building efficiency e building automation)
nellambito delle smart grid energetiche delle nuove citt a zero consu-
mo di energia (cosi come previsto dagli obiettivi di Europe 2020).
Questo nostro primo progetto, che ci auguriamo di replicare, dimostra

Cross-border brain drain is a phenomenon
that has afflicted us for some time, resulting
in a general exodus of talents. In some cases,
however, instead of fleeing abroad, these
talents circulate, remaining in the Cisalpine
environment and, continuing on their way,
also arrive at... Ponte San Marco where they
go to join the already vast legion of intellec-
tuals with which, fortunately, we are well sup-
plied! Davide and Valentina, two young Roman
environment engineers, rather than seeking
their fortunes abroad, became our colleagues
some months ago. Davide and Valentina are,
in fact, the winners of the first edition of the
Amleto Cavagna Prize in which they parti-
cipated with a research project dedicated to
optimisation of the gas engineering sector
and support of researchers in the sector of the
best technologies applied to sustainable deve-
lopment. We have established this prize, dedi-
cated to the memory of one of the founders of
our Group, to investigate various aspects tied
to the energy efficiency of gas supply networks
and reduction of the running costs of existing
buildings. The project addressed a variety of goals: understand the
most effective way to restructure the buildings to make them suitable
for our LPG applications (which we have renamed Greengear); under-
stand how and when to adopt our Greengear to save on gas bills;
understand the extent to which our Greengear is less polluting than
conventional applications; understand the marketing strategy to be
adopted for commercial positioning of our Greengear on the market.
Therefore, by the end of the year, we hope to understand how to
insert our Greengear system according to a building efficiency and
building automation approach in the smart energy grids of new zero
energy use cities (as established by Europe 2020 targets).
Our first project, which we hope to replicate, confirms that, without

come, pur senza impiegare eccessive risorse, si possa riuscire a coniuga-
re linvestimento nella ricerca con i benefici fiscali, anche in un momen-
to di crisi generale. Questo progetto, infatti, stato concretizzato anche
grazie agli incentivi messi a disposizione dal Governo, che ci hanno
permesso di recuperare una notevole parte dellinvestimento.
Focus su Valentina Stefanini
Valentina un Ingegnere per lambiente ed il territorio, laureata a Firenze, citt in
cui nata ed attualmente vive. Ha conseguito un Master (MSc) in Environmental
Science with Legislation & Management presso la Brunel University di Londra ed
un dottorato in Energetica, Dipartimento di Ingegneria Nucleare e Conversioni di
Energia, presso la Sapienza Universit di Roma. Per circa sei anni stata un esperto
della Segreteria Tecnica per le Aree Marine Protette della Direzione Protezione della
Natura del Ministero dellAmbiente della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare. Attualmente
svolge attivit di docenza, ricerca e consulenza e collabora a progetti europei nel
settore dellambiente e del paesaggio, attivit che le consente, sotto il patrocinio
della Sapienza, di lavorare con ricercatori e professori di rilievo internazionale.
Focus su Davide Astiago Garcia
Davide si sposato nel 2006 ed ha 3 bimbi. E Dottore di Ricerca in Fisica Tecnica e
collabora da tempo con il Dipartimento di Fisica Tecnica (ora DIAEE) dellUniversit
Sapienza di Roma su numerose ricerche nazionali ed internazionali mirate alla pre-
venzione ed alla mitigazione degli impatti sullambiente dovuti alle attivit delluo-
mo. Si occupato, in particolare, dellinquinamento delle acque e dellaria, di quali
siano i migliori sistemi per produrre energia limitando linquinamento atmosferico,
e di tante altre tematiche inerenti la sostenibilit ambientale, soprattutto in ambito
energetico. Queste sue attivit non si limitano allambito delle sue ricerche professio-
nali, ma Davide le replica anche nei suoi corsi didattici (come professore di corsi sia
universitari che non accademici), in cui cerca di mostrare ai ragazzi le tecnologie e le
buone pratiche efficaci, per cercare di mantenere un buon livello della qualit della
vita umana senza compromettere lambiente che ci circonda.

Europa 2020 la strategia decennale per la crescita sviluppata dallUnione europea
per uscire dalla crisi economica che ci attanaglia e per migliorare il nostro modello di
crescita, creando le condizioni per una nuova modalit di sviluppo economico, pi
intelligente, sostenibile e solidale. Verr misurata in base al livello di realizzazione dei
5 obiettivi che la Comunit Europea si preposta che si possono sinteticamente rias-
sumere nei seguenti: innalzamento delloccupazione; incremento degli investimenti
nella ricerca e sviluppo; riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra, maggiore efficienza
energetica e maggior sfruttamento delle energie rinnovabili; incremento dei livelli di
istruzione; riduzione delle situazioni di povert ed emarginazione.

Focus on Valentina Stefanini
Valentina graduated with a degree in Environment and Territory Engineering in
Florence where she was born and currently lives. She took a Master (MSc) in Envi-
ronmental Science with Legislation & Management at Brunel University in London
and a PhD in Energetics, Department of Nuclear Engineering and Energy Conversion
at the La Sapienza University of Rome. For around six years, she has been an expert of
the Technical Secretariat for Protected Marine Areas of the Direction of the Ministry for
the Environment, Territory and Sea. At the moment, she carries out teaching, research
and consulting activities and cooperates in European projects in the sector of the
environment and landscape through which, under the sponsorship of La Sapienza,
she works with researchers and teachers of international renown.
Focus On Davide Astiago Garcia
Davide married in 2006 and has 3 children. He has a PhD in Technical Physics and
has been cooperating for some time with the Department of Technical Physics (now
DIAEE) of the La Sapienza University of Rome in numerous national and international
research projects addressing prevention and mitigation of the environmental impacts
of human activities. He has dealt, in particular, with water and air pollution, the best
systems for producing energy while limiting atmospheric pollution, and many other
topics tied to environmental sustainability, in particular in the energy environment.
These activities are not restricted to the sphere of his professional research but are
also covered in his courses (as professor of both university and non-academic courses)
in which he tries to demonstrate to the students effective technologies and best
practices in maintaining a good quality of human life without compromising the
surrounding environment.
Focus on Europe 2020
Europe 2020 is the ten-year growth strategy proposed by the European Union to
overcome the current crisis that afflicts us and to improve our growth model, creating
the conditions for a new smarter, greener and more inclusive method of economic
development. Progress towards these objectives will be measured against five
representative headline targets that can be summed up briefly as follows: increase
the employment rate, boost investments in R&D; reduce greenhouse gas emissions;
improve energy efficiency and greater use of renewable energy sources; increase

Gas Review di questanno ci d lopportunit di dare evidenza ad
una struttura che, per gli acquisti di gruppo delle divisioni valvole,
gi da alcuni anni, governa un processo importantissimo: il Group
Procurement .
Cosa significa Procurement? E una parola inglese che letteralmente
significa procurare e che indica di fatto tutte le attivit collegate e
mirate a mettere a disposizione delle aziende tutto quanto sia necessa-
rio per poter processare il proprio prodotto e tutti i servizi fondamentali
al proseguimento dellattivit aziendale. In italiano viene normalmente
identificato con lUfficio Acquisti, per dare un riferimento pi concreto a
chi con linglese non ha molta familiarit (sempre pi indispensabile per
noi, essendo ormai a tutti gli effetti una multinazionale).
Tutti sappiamo quanto necessaria questa funzione in ogni azienda,
ma non tutti sappiamo quali siano le problematiche legate a questo
lavoro e quanto, a livello di gruppo, sinora sia stato intrapreso.
Allinterno del Gruppo Cavagna storicamente sono sempre esistiti degli
uffici acquisti in ogni consociata (come tuttora peraltro) ma, fino a poco
fa, gli stessi erano completamente indipendenti gli uni dagli altri, sia
per operativit che per autonomia decisionale.

in modo molto importante con tutti gli uffici acquisti delle Divisioni
valvole (Omeca e Pergola a fare da capofila, gli altri si sono allineati man
mano) hanno riguardato la standardizzazione delle modalit operative
di gestione degli ordini (sembrer strano, ma ogni divisione lavorava in
modo diverso) e leliminazione del tempo non a valore aggiunto nella
gestione del ciclo di vita dellordine di acquisto: tramite leliminazione
della carta e la realizzazione di procedure informatiche abbiamo taglia-
to il tempo medio di gestione dellordine (offerta, emissione, invio, rice-
zione conferma, registrazione dati) da 12 minuti a 5 minuti/ordine. In un
periodo (2008/2011) nel quale il numero di righe di ordine di acquisto
incrementato del 30% circa allanno, il miglioramento di cui sopra ha
consentito di fare fronte agli aumentati carichi di lavoro senza ricorrere
a risorse aggiuntive nelle aree acquisti.
In seguito abbiamo rivisto e standardizzato le procedure di valutazione
(vendor rating ) dei fornitori per monitorare semestralmente (e su alcuni
aspetti anche mensilmente) aspetti fondamentali relativi alla fornitura,
che oltre alle condizioni economiche sono: laffidabilit delle consegne,
la qualit del prodotto, la velocit delle risposte.
Infatti, la logica che si instaurata in ambito Procurement non persegue
pi la ricerca solo del miglior prezzo di listino, bens il controllo ed il
minore Total Cost of Ownership (costo totale di acquisto). La fornitura
ora valutata in modo completo, sia in ambito economico diretto
(prezzo di listino, giorni di pagamento, resa della merce), sia in ambito
indiretto.

Group Procurement and Risk Manager
This year, the annual newsmagazine provides the chance to describe
a peculiar function that, for the Group purchasing departments of the
valves Divisions, has been controlling a very important process for
some years: the Group Procurement.
What does Procurement mean? It is an English word which literally
means to procure. Indeed, it refers to all the Companys activities
connected and aiming to procure both what is necessary for the
industrial process and all its fundamental Services. The Italian term
normally identifies as Procurement the Purchasing Department;
this is more comprehensible to who is not familiar with the English
language whose knowledge is becoming more essential for us, since
that Cavagna Group is a fully Multinational Company).
Everyone knows how important is that function in each Company, but
not all know which are the problems related to this job and what, up
to now, has been done for the Group. Historically, every Subsidiary in
Cavagna Group Company always had its Purchasing Department (and
it still has now) but, until recently, they worked independently from
each other, both in terms of operative processes and of decisional
autonomy.
This working attitude was successfully used for
one reason: it is a very flexible method which

Furthermore, it is common thinking that, who

buyers spent most of their time to negotiate
for obtaining the lowest price, since that this

The Procurement Project has been now ope-

goal to fully manage the purchasing process,
both operationally and strategically for the
Group decisions.
The starting activities carried out together
with all the Valves Purchasing Departments,
on which everybody had been working ener-
getically (Omeca and Pergola were the frontrunners, while the others
came later) dealt with the standardisation of the order process (it
could be strange, but every Division worked differently) and with
the removal of its unnecessary time of management. By eliminating
paper and improving informatics systems, the average time of order
managing (offer request, issuing and sending of orders, confirmation
return, data registration) decreased from 12 minute to 5 for each
order. During the years 2008 and 2011, the order lines increased by
the 30% per year and; this improvement enabled to meet the increa-
sed workloads, without taking extra employees.
Afterwards, we reviewed and standardized the procedures (e.g. the
vendor rating) concerning suppliers evaluation, in order to monitor,
every six months (and, for some aspects, also once a month), funda-
mental supply requirements not only the economics conditions, but
also suppliers liability on deliveries, product quality, the quickness in
replying to requests.
As a matter of fact, the method adopted by the Procurement does not
follow only the negotiation for the best price, but it is also aimed to
reach the control and the lowest Total Cost of Ownership. Supplies
are evaluated in their wholeness, that means considering both the
features with a direct economic impact (price list, payment terms,
incoterms) and the features with an indirect economic impact.

Di seguito alcuni aspetti che vengono tenuti in considerazione e che
pesano in eguale misura sulla valutazione e decisione di fornitura:
Eventuali costi doganali;
Distanza del fornitore e relativo impatto sulle maggiori scorte da
mantenere in azienda per evitare il rischio di rottura di stock;
Livello di qualit e relativo impatto economico sulle attivit
conseguenti alla non qualit (gestione della non conformit,
reso merce, attesa materiale e conseguente rischio fermo linea
per materiali non conformi, carichi di lavoro aggiuntivi su altre
funzioni);
Livello di puntualit e relativo impatto economico che diretta-
mente influenzo il livello di servizio dellazienda (indicatore lean:
puntualit nella consegna al cliente);
Un altro beneficio atteso e che si sta verificando che, centralizzando
la decisione di spesa, il potere di acquisto nei confronti dei fornitori
divenuto sicuramente pi elevato; questo ci ha inoltre portato a fare
progetti dedicati alla riduzione e razionalizzazione del numero dei for-
nitori per classi merceologiche. Sia il numero di fornitori di componenti
torniti che di componenti in plastica stato dimezzato: oltre al raggiun-
gimento di saving interessanti, al miglioramento delle condizioni con-
trattuali, questo ha portato ad una semplificazione di gestione. Inoltre, il
lavoro di analisi dati, di richieste dofferta, di trattativa alla base di questi
progetti ha portato nuovi spunti di riflessione e aperto le porte a nuove
possibilit di miglioramento.
Da tre anni a questa parte inoltre il Procurement di gruppo attivo
nella razionalizzazione dei processi di acquisto delle consociate estere
di vecchia e nuova acquisizione per ricondurre anche in questo caso le
procedure operative ed i comportamenti nellambito di quanto gi in
essere e standardizzato a livello centrale.
Da segnalare a questo proposito lo sforzo che si sta profondendo per
gestire la maggior parte dei materiali diretti (componenti e sottogruppi)
ed indiretti (macchine, attrezzature, utensili , materiali vari ) di acquisto
delle consociate produttive estere, che vengono rifornite dallItalia tra-
mite spedizioni mensili (container completi di merce via nave) ed anche
giornaliere. Lo sforzo di pianificazione e di continuo aggiornamento dei
dati in questo caso ancora pi difficile e complesso in quanto si tratta
di anticipare il pi possibile le previsioni di consumo delle consociate
estere tenuto conto del tempo di spedizione della merce, che va dal
mese al mese e mezzo, e del tempo di produzione dei sottogruppi e di
acquisto dei componenti, anchesso non inferiore al mese e mezzo . Ci
comporta una puntuale valutazione dei livelli di scorta e unattenzione
e reazione praticamente continue: uninadeguata gestione delle infor-
mazioni da parte del Procurement comporterebbe, infatti, un fermo
linea di produzione alle consociate.
Il Procurement di gruppo si occupa inoltre di definire, per conto di tutte
le divisioni produttive, la fornitura di servizi di ogni tipo (ed in alcuni
casi anche di monitorarne costantemente il costo): dal listino camioni-
stico ai contratti assicurativi, dal noleggio veicoli aziendali alla gestione
degli interventi di manutenzione, passando per la telefonia mobile.
Last but not least, in una realt sempre pi complessa e articolata, uno
dei prossimi traguardi da raggiungere lo strutturarsi per gestire con
continuit e successo acquisti offshore, ossia da mercati logisticamente
e culturalmente lontani, ma che stanno emergendo a livello industriale.
Il gruppo di lavoro del Procurement composto da un responsabile a
livello centrale, due risorse dedicate alle attivit di coordinamento e di
gestione delle attivit di gruppo, tutti i responsabili Acquisti e addetti
acquisti di tutte le divisioni valvole. Il gruppo di lavoro si riunisce
mensilmente per condividere lo stato di avanzamento delle attivit e
per parlare dellandamento delle forniture e proporre eventuali nuovi
obiettivi o nuove opportunit di miglioramento. Progetti mirati di
gruppo vengono assegnati anche al responsabile acquisti di una divi-
sione produttiva in funzione dei carichi di lavoro o della conoscenza
specialistica di un determinato argomento. Tutto questo fattibile ed
ottenibile in quanto si ottenuto un elevato livello di allineamento e di
standardizzazione delle attivit operative e grazie ad un livello soddisfa-
cente di condivisione delle informazioni a tutti i livelli.
Potrei scrivere altre dieci pagine per raccontare il meraviglioso mondo
del Procurement, ma non voglio annoiare troppo i nostri lettori
concludo solo invitandovi a ricordare che quasi tutto quello che movi-
mentato in azienda e che supporta la vostra attivit quotidiana frutto
di un importante e complesso lavoro di squadra del quale non sempre
si a conoscenza.

Hereinafter you will find some examples of the aspects taken into
account, which have the same importance for the evaluation and the
consequent choice on the supply:
Eventual/potential customs clearance costs;
Distance from the suppliers warehouse and consequent higher
level of stock to be kept in order to avoid stock shortage;
Quality level and economic costs related to the activities raising
from non-conformities (non-conformity management, surren-
der of goods, workloads for other functions);
On-time deliveries and relative economic effects which directly
impact on the Companys service level (lean indicator: on time
deliveries to the customers).
Another benefit resulting from the centralized purchasing decision
is the rising purchasing power towards suppliers. This led the num-
ber of suppliers to be rationalised according to their commodities
sector: as an example, both the number of suppliers of turned brass
components and that one of the suppliers of plastic was halved.
Consequently, an improvement of contractual conditions and signifi-
cant savings were achieved, as well as a simplified task management.
Additionally, the implementation of those projects, based on data
analysis, offer requests and negotiations have opened up new possi-
bilities of improvement.
For these last three years, the Group Procurement has been working
for rationalizing the Foreign Subsidiaries purchasing processes (both
of new and past acquisition), with the perspective to standardize
them to the management processes of the headquarters.
In this regard, it is worth noting that best efforts have been made to
manage most of the direct materials (components and subassemblies)
and indirect ones (machineries, tools and consumption materials)
supplied from Italy to the Foreign Subsidiaries, by sea once a month
(with fully charged containers) or daily, by express courier. In order to
anticipate swiftly as possible the Foreign Subsidiaries consumption
forecasts, efforts for analysing and updating data become more and
more complex: both time for delivering goods and time for producing
subassemblies (which are both of one month or one month and a
half) must be taken in consideration. That implies a punctual analysis
of the storage levels, besides to a continuous monitoring: an unsuc-
cessful information management by the Group Procurement could
cause a Foreign Subsidiarys production line stop.
Furthermore, the Group Procurement is in charge also to define, on
behalf of all Manufacturing Divisions, the supply of all kind of Services
(and it monitors constantly their costs, too): from forwarders pricelists
to insurance agreements, from maintenance operations to Companys
car renting and mobile phone.
Last but not least, in a more and more complex environment, one
of the next achievement is to organise the offshore purchases (from
markets far in logistics and cultural terms, but emerging in economy)
in order to manage them constantly and successfully.
The Group Procurement team is composed of a Director, two emplo-
yees, in charge to coordinate and manage the Group activities, all
the Purchasing Managers and employees of every Purchasing Valves
Division. The team meets monthly in order to share the developments
of the projects, to discuss about the supplies trend and to propose
also any new tasks or opportunities of improvement.
Targeted Group Projects are set to the Purchasing Managers of every
Division, according to their workload and their specific knowledge on
the topic of interest. All that is achievable thanks to a high standardi-
sation of operations and also thanks to a satisfactory level of sharing
information at every level.
Ten pages more could be written for describing the wonderful world
of the Procurement, but it would run the risk of boring readers! One
last remarkable thing is that all the purchased items moved in a
Company and all that is of support for everyones daily tasks, is the
result of an important and structured teamwork, which is not always
evident.

LApparecchio di Respirazione Autonomo (SCBA) un dispositivo
indossato dai soccorritori e dai pompieri per fornire aria respirabile
in ambienti caratterizzati da atmosfere pericolose.
La valvola SCBA Xtreme del Gruppo Cavagna, sviluppata soltanto
alcuni anni fa, oggi un prodotto riconosciuto su cui fanno affi-
damento, ogni giorno, molti operatori del settore emergenza, e
non solo. Bench sia stata progettata per lutilizzo in condizioni
estreme, la valvola Xtreme del Gruppo Cavagna utilizzata per altri
applicazioni, ad esempio nellindustria mineraria e nella societ
che si occupano di manutenzione. Solitamente, i clienti di questa
valvola sono OEM che forniscono dispositivi SCBA a governi locali

In Russia, grazie allaffidabilit e alla lunga vita di servizio della val-

The SCBA (Self Contained Breathing Apparatus) is a device worn by
rescue workers and firefighters to provide breathable air in dangerous
atmospheres.
The Cavagna Group SCBA Xtreme-air valve developed only a few years
ago, today in many countries is an accredited product on which many
emergency operators, and not only, rely on daily. Although designed
to be used under severe conditions the Cavagna Group Extreme-air
valve, has found other applications such as in the mining industry
and in maintenance companies. Typical customers for this valve are
OEMs, which supply local governments and various industries with
SCBA devices.
In Russia, thanks to the reliability and long service life of the valve, we
are the supplying the OEMs, which are currently servicing the Russian
firefighters. The extreme conditions under which the valve must per-

In 2012, RECA R&D and management put the final touch on comple-
tion of the KOSAN+ range. After developing and launching the Kosan+
domestic and commercial regulator lines in 2010 and 2011, the RECA
division has now presented to the market the Kosan+ line for indu-
strial LPG applications that normally require high pressure regulators
able to guarantee high flow rates and capacity and which are usually
adopted in restaurants, shopping centres, offices and for welding.
Kosan+ Industrial was launched in April this year concurrently with the
Atlanta Fair and, according to tradition, the regulators were showcased
both on the stand and during the reception at the Georgia Aquarium,
the event organised by the Group each year for customers in the
Americas.
Kosan+ industrial regulators target a range
of different markets, from the Americas to
the Middle East, from China to Australia. On
an extremely competitive market increasin-
gly under pressure from Asian competitors,
the possibility of proposing a complete
range of regulators able to cover all applica-
tions represents value added for the Group
which will certainly benefit from this. A fur-
ther advantage of completion of this range
is that it will permit optimisation of models
and components for development of the
natural gas industrial and domestic line, the
next challenge facing the Reca division and
the entire Group in 2013.
Innovation has always been an inherent
factor of Recas policy and of that of the
entire Cavagna Group. On an increasingly
dynamic, competitive market, the ability to
innovate is not only important but essential
to guarantee the survival of a product. Innovation must generate
products that are well received also by conservative markets adverse
to change, products able to cater to customers real requirements and
which are different from those of competitors. Conceiving new ideas
and developing these into innovative products requires investments
in terms of both economic and human resources. Once again, the
Reca division has accepted the challenge, providing its usual highly
professional response also in launching this most recent line that com-
pletes the KOSAN+ family. A family that, with the debut of the range

Il Cavagna Group Bike Team prosegue a gonfie vele o, in gergo pi
ciclistico, a testa bassa.
Nel 2012 lattivit diventata un po pi competitiva, ci siamo infatti
misurati in qualche gara di MTB (Mountain Bike) spingendoci anche
fuori provincia (perfino sulle stupende Dolomiti!!) e nelle quali
abbiamo ben figurato.
Durante la settimana le uscite sono principalmente individuali (
difficile far coincidere gli orari di tutti) ma nel weekend cerchiamo
sempre di ritrovarci per una pedalata in compagnia alla ricerca di
nuovi itinerari, sia in Mountain Bike che in Bici da Corsa.
Ringraziamo come sempre la Propriet che, come noi, vicina alla
cultura dello sport sia come attivit ricreativa che come sostegno
alla buona forma fisicaallinsegna del famoso detto mens sana
in corpore sano!!!
Vi auguriamo quindi i nostri migliori auguri di Buon Natale e per un
sereno 2013e mangiate poco panettone!!!

The Cavagna Group Bike Team continues to flourish or, in cycling jar-
gon, get its head down.
In 2012, its activity has become slightly more competitive. We have
actually taken on some MTB (Mountain Bike) competitions, going
beyond the borders of the province (even on the marvellous
Dolomites!!), in which we did ourselves proud.
During the week, our cycling trips are largely individual (its hard to
juggle everyones schedule ) but at weekends we always try to
meet up for a ride in the countryside in search of new routes, both on
Mountain Bikes and Road Bikes.
As always we would like to thank the Ownership which, like us, is a
strong supporter of the culture of sport as both recreational activity
and as support for good physical fitnessin view of the famous saying
healthy body, healthy mind!!!
We send you our very best wishes for an extremely Happy Christmas
and a peaceful 2013and dont overdo it with the Christmas cake!!!
