Observation and Investigation 1.5: Make predictions and check them, with adult support, through
Background Information: Best taught to small groups of 4 or 5 children at a time age four to
six years old.
Objective: Students should be able to identify and name different parts of an apple such as the
seeds, flesh, and core.
Materials:
1. Free printable of a label the apple printable found on Google images. 1 per student.
2. Glue
3. Scissors
4. Actual apple to cut and use as a real life prop.
Procedure:
Review It is optional for children to have prior knowledge of the story Johnny
Appleseed.
Overview Present the students with a visual of a real life apple to pass around and
examine before cutting open.
Presentation Read the printable story of Johnny Appleseed to the group of students.
After reading explain to the students that we will be conducting a science experiment. We are
going to find out what are all parts of the apple inside and out. Ask the students to guess what
they think is inside of the apple. Have an apple already cut open and show to the students what is
inside. Have them all examine it. Explain each part of the apple. Have the students cut out each
word and glue the words to the correct corresponding blanks. Once the worksheet is finished
have the students taste the apple.
Differentiated Instruction:
Have gloves available for students who have SPD (Sensory Processing Disorder) and do not
want to touch the different parts of the apple with their bare hands. It is important that they
have an option to shield their hands.
Discussion Questions:
1. What do you think is inside an apple?

Evidence of Learning:
Students who show that they can effectively name out different parts of an apple prove
that they met the learning objective.
Next Steps:
If students show an evidence of learning teachers can move onto what the life cycle of an
apple is. If the students do not show an understanding of the assignment it is important to revisit
this topic in a different way.
