History

A few themes run constant throughout the SAEL story- entrepreneurial instinct backed by grit,

persistence, sound understanding of the need of the hour and the ability to achieve, aspire and

inspire. Every chapter in the SAEL story is richly imbued with intrepid enterprise, unrelenting

hard work and deep commitment to the ecology and economic prosperity of entire communities.

At the cusp of a new century in 1999, Dr Harbhajan Singh Awla decided to invest the rich and

diverse experience he had amassed since 1971 as Chief of the Central Warehousing Corporation

Limited, Delhi (Govt. of India Enterprise under Ministry of Agriculture) and Rural Warehousing

business in a company formulated to a unique vision. Already well versed with the running of a

thriving business, courtesy the several warehouses he had been managing since 1971, Dr Awla

was eager to translate his cherished desire into a brick and mortar reality. Hailing from India's

bread-basket, the fertile and vigorous Punjab- he envisaged an enterprise that would leverage

agro products and bio waste to create energy that was sorely needed to fuel India's soaring

developmental and economic aspirations.

A capable and dynamic trio ably assisted Dr Awla in the achievement of this dream- his sons Mr.

Jasbir Singh, Mr. Sukhbir Singh and Mr. Raminder Singh. Hence, SAEL began life in 1971 but

became a Pvt Ltd company in 1999. Right from the start, SAEL was on the winning track as the

time was ripe for rapid growth, post the 1993 liberalization and globalisation of the Indian

economy. The need of the nation for energy, agro management and food security was ably met

by the diverse undertakings at SAEL. A Solvent Extraction Plant was established in 2004 and

godowns and warehouses constructed for Food Corporation of India proved highly profitable.

In a short span of 7 years, the Pvt Ltd company was incorporated into a Limited Company in

2006- Sukhbir Agro Energy Limited (SAEL), with enrolled office in Guruharsahai, Punjab

(India) and corporate headquarters in New Delhi.

In 2006, the first major expansion and diversification was undertaken by the setting up of an

integrated food processing and 15 MW biomass based power Plant at Fatehullahpur, Ghazipur

(Uttar Pradesh) The project with Capital outlay of 125 crores was set up in record time without

any time and cost overruns.

Three years later in 2009, a 14.5 MW Biomass Based Power Plant was established at Channu,

Muktsar (Punjab) in Group company Universal Biomass Energy Pvt. Ltd. The next milestone

came in 2012, with the setting up of 1 MW Solar PV Power Project at Sirsa Haryana under

JNNSM Scheme, in another group Group company Sukhbir Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd.

Another groundbreaking achievement in 2012 was the setting up of 130 TPH modern Rice Mill

for Paddy Processing in record time of six months involving capital outlay of Rs. 126 Crores at

Inayatpur, Shahjahanpur (UP).

The warehousing and logistical capability was bolstered by construction of rural Godowns for

Food grain Storage having total Capacity of 13.83 Lacs MT to meet the requirement of Food

Corporation of India at various locations in the state of U.P, Punjab and Haryana under PEG

Scheme 2008 with total capital outlay of Rs.727 Crores.

Future Ready-

Identifying and working on scalable and renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power

and by diversifying and expanding into new product and service categories SAEL will

consolidate and reinforce their current position as global market pioneer. On the basis of

innovative thinking and bleeding edge technology, we at SAEL will walk the talk and lead by

example as Clean Energy Leaders, Farm to Fork end to end suppliers, bankable logistical and

supply chain moderators and capacity administrators. We will do this while reducing the

environmental impact of our products and services and by safeguarding and shaping our planet

towards a brighter and happier tomorrow.

Retailing-

SAEL has already launched several brands in various product categories which have been

selectively marketed in North India and have garnered extremely enthusiastic acceptance by

consumers. The volumes and range of our export products of rice and other food products is

constantly increasinging, as is the reach and scope that covers 3 continents. SAEL plans to move

into the food retail space in a much more bigger way in the near future with a diversified range

of high-quality, affordable, organic and premium food products and ready to eat products.
Warehousing-

In recognition of the excellence of the warehousing and capacity solutions provided by SAEL,

there has been growing demand for more such facilities. Larger Warehouses have been

constructed to meet the requirement of Food grain Storage for Food Corporation of India in U.P

with 556000 MT capacity under PEG Scheme at Sitapur, Lakhimpur, Behraich, Maharajganj,

Siddharth Nagar, Kushinagar, Mirzapur, Badaun, Pilibhit and Shajahanpur. Construction at these

sites has been completed and they have been handed over to Food Corporation of India/State

Warehousing Corporation. Many such endeavors are in the offing for various Indian states that

require exceptional logistical and benchmarked warehousing facilities for safe and hygienic food

storage.
SAEL has plans to launch a new range of high quality, organic and nutritious edible items

such as Rice blended with different pulses.

SAEL aims to introduce a range of new products such as Baby Rice, Fortified Rice with

minerals, ready to cook Biryani, Kheer and flavour-blended Rice in purchaser packs.

SAEL plants to advertise the assortment of broken Basmati and Non-basmati Rice,

utilized as a part of making highly popular and nutritious Rice puddings (kheers) which

are a staple dessert and celebration food across India. SAEL will soon market its organic

range via modern trade and general trade and in addition, is planning to value it

moderately, so as to make it accessible and pocket friendly for the great Indian middle

class.

SAEL will promote various local speciality rice, long grain and medium grain rice, long

grain and medium grain rice and basmati rice in different pack sizes running from 1kilo

to 25 kilos, The organization is in procedure of setting up its own rice strength outlets

among different urban communities and in addition an E-trade site to advance direct

offers of rice to the end buyers.

SAEL plans to venture into the packaging, retailing and export of other locally grown

items such as Sugar, Pulses and Vegetables.

Renewable Energy

As the pioneer in making clean energy available in the country, SAEL has the potential to

produce 1000 MW of clean energy. SAEL will partner dynamically with state governments to

create a network of energy efficient and environmentally suitable integrated plants and energy

producing units across India. The potential for green energy is unlimited and SAEL is poised to
take full advantage. As a tropical country, India enjoys more than 300 days annually of sunshine,

making solar energy one of the most cost effective, sustainable and affordable energy sources.

We are planning to enter the solar energy space in a big way as this resource is available in

plenty across India. Biomass is another sunrise arena. SAEL has established the biggest biomass

based captive power plant in India with 25 MW, where Energy is generated using 50 % in-house

fuel such as rice husk. Subsidiary 15 mw standalone power plant based at Lambi, Punjab is

already producing energy and we further aim to expand hugely into the biomass Energy space in

Punjab. Punjab produces 60 million tonnes of biomass waste annually which is set ablaze by

farmers, causing widespread environmental damage and giving rise to umpteen health issues.

Technology

SAEL is committed to providing easily accessible farming solutions that help to increase the

productivity of farms and boost yields. working with the farmers from the initial stages of

sowing to the final harvest, SAEL has undertaken the sacred task of making farming more

secure, sustainable, scalable, efficient and environmentally friendly by minimizing use of

chemicals and maximising 'cleaner and greener' solutions.

Bleeding edge mechanization, state of the art technological know-how and adherence to the

highest internationally benchmarked quality standards ensure premium quality and optimal

production. Equipped with machinery from world leaders such as Satake Universal Co. Ltd,

Japan, Buhler (I) Pvt. Ltd, Switzerland, Schmidt Seeger Germany and MFS, USA, SAEL's

position as leading producer and distributor of hygienically packed quality rice in convenient

packaging is strengthening daily.

Rice Processing-
The staple diet of the majority of the global population, the importance of Rice is incontestable

as a high energy carbohydrate source. Grown extensively across the fertile North Indian plain,

Rice processing and production forms a critical part of SAEL's business operations. Rice

processing factories that acquire produce directly from the farmers at a fair price in various areas

in UP and Punjab produce distinctive varieties of short grain Rice, medium grain and Basmati

Rice that cater to every market segment. Bleeding edge mechanization, state of the art

technological know-how and adherence to the highest internationally benchmarked quality

standards ensure premium quality and optimal production. Equipped with machinery from world

leaders such as Satake Universal Co. Ltd, Japan, Buhler (I) Pvt. Ltd, Switzerland, Schmidt

Seeger Germany and MFS, USA, SAEL's position as leading producer and distributor of

hygienically packed quality rice in convenient packaging is strengthening daily.

The new thrust on marketing under SAEL's own brand names is a critical step forward towards

our stated goal of eliminating middlemen and ensuring that both the farmers and consumers get

the best possible quality at the best possible price. It's a win-win situation for all stakeholders as
both the farmer and consumer interests are paramount to us. SPN DSC-6572 jpg)This shift in

the company's paradigm strategy is apparent in recent years as levy rice for Food Corporation of

India (FCI) in Uttar Pradesh (UP) that formed 75% of total rice production in 2008 has been

subsequently reduced to 25% in 2015. In pursuance of this policy, we upgraded and diversified

our machinery at the Ghazipur Rice Mill by adding specialized and sophisticated equipment such

as Grading machines, De-stoning machines, Silky Machines, Colour sortex machines and

Packing machines.

The strategic shift towards forming a credible, viable, secure and fair price conduit between the

farmer and the market through open market sale in domestic and overseas market got ample

encouragement in 2012 when the Government of India lifted the ban on export of non-Basmati

rice from India. This has facilitated the identification of markets in Middle East and Gulf, Africa

and Asia as the new thrust areas for rice export by SAEL.
Renewable Power
Energy is the paramount need for progress. It is the force that drives development and its all-

enveloping embrace has made human life so dependant that today, it's difficult to envisage life

without power. Traditional energy sources based on fossil fuels such as Coal, Petroleum, wood

etc are not only finite but require huge investments and cause ecological damage upon extraction

and usage.

Renewable, scalable, secure, affordable and eco-friendly fuel and power supply source is the

irrefutable need of the hour. At SAEL, we consider it our primary patriotic duty to contribute to

the generation and promotion of the usage of sustainable power. It is our proud priviledge to be

among the pioneers in the generation and creation of renewable, bio based and now even solar

power in the country.

A SAEL initiative that started as an agro based power generation capability, has grown by leaps

and bounds to now encompass solar and bio based energy. The acute need for 'green' power in

the country has brought SAEL to the forefront of the responsible conglomerates that are fulfilling

the critical needs of the nation, in a sustainable and cost effective manner.

SAEL's 15 MW biomass plant based at Ghazipur(UP), 14.5 MW biomass plant based at Channu

(Punjab) and 1 MW Solar Power based plant at Sirsa (Haryana) are fully operational. The

Ghazipur plant was a watershed endeavor as it formed a huge chunk of the first major expansion

and diversification drive forward by SAEL in 2006. It was a precursor of things to come this

state of the art integrated food processing and 15 MW biomass-based power Plant, With a capital

outlay of 125 Cr, it was set up in record time without any time and cost overruns.

The future is as bright as the summer sun in North India as SAEL now aims to harness the

unlimited power of the Sun for 'green and clean' energy. SAEL's future solar power projects and

upcoming energy ventures will generate an ambitious 100 MW across different locations in

India. The vital need for this resource has already invited interest and SAEL has signed the

Power Purchase Agreement to offer power solutions at a reasonable cost to the Uttar Pradesh

Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL). Our biomass based power plant is eligible for registration

as CDM Project which will earn CERs (1 CER= Emission reduction of 1 MT CO2). This is

tradable in European Market and will fetch much required foreign currency for India. Notably,

the 15 MW Biomass Based Grid interactive Power Plant at Ghazipur (U.P) has been registered as

CDM Project with UNFCCC (Project ID 2708) and the CDM benefit is available for crediting

period of 10 years.
The 14.5 MW Biomass Based Power Plant at Channu, Muktsar in Punjab, established in 2009 in

Group company Universal Biomass Energy Pvt. Ltd is functioning optimally. Another 1 MW

Solar PV Power Project at Sirsa in Haryana, established in 2012 under JNNSM Scheme, in

another group Group company Sukhbir Solar Energy Pvt. Ltd is also running successfully and

sustainably.

Warehousing and Capacity framework-

The nucleus of the SAEL story lies in warehousing and capacity framework. At a time (1971)

when supply chain and logistics were not a part of everyday business vocabulary as they are

now, SAEL was involved in providing logistical solutions, godowns and warehousing facilities

to noteworthy governmental entities such as the Food Corporation of India (FCI). SAEL's

warehousing units have capacity limits of around 14,00,000 tons and are leased to the

Food Corporation of India on assurance lease premise for a long time, creating a consistent

yearly income. The well-constructed and modern warehouses are situated in rural areas in the
states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana where food stockpiles are kept in well ventilated,

well lit, secure and hygienic conditions.

More such endeavors are in the offing for various Indian states that

require exceptional logistical and benchmarked warehousing facilities for safe and hygienic food

storage.
Solvent Extractions-

After the paddy is harvested and before the rice gets eaten, there is a vital stage- The Milling and

shelling phase. This is when the harvested rice is dehusked and a critical substance-Solvent is

obtained. Solvent is edible oil which is highly nutritious, fights high cholesterol and provides

high grade fibre. India, as the highest producer of Rice in the world, after China, has the potential

to fulfill the nutritional deficit in the country by large scale production of Rice Bran Oil and

solvent. Currently, only a small proportion of the rice is processed through modern sheller units

using appropriate technology, while the rest of the produce goes through small local mills where

the rice bran is wasted and solvent is not extracted.

SAEL's highly sophisticated and modern sheller mills have the capability to process paddy to

obtain this precious by-product. The best in class technological machinery, acquired from a

range of leading companies across the globe enable us to optimally extract solvent at Saratech,

Cheema Kettle and Paharpur Cooling Towers. The Ghazipur plant has a 500 TPD capacity

whereas 200 TPD is produced at the Guruharsahai plant.

Retail, Brands and Products-

Tasty, nutritious, easy to make and robustthe reasons for the universal popularity of Rice as a

food staple are not far to seek. At SAEL, we not only understand and appreciate these natural

advantages, but spare no effort to augment and enhance them by following highest procedural

standards of production, grading, sorting, pricing and packaging to prepare the best possible

product for you. Our plants are located in the immensely fertile North Indian plains. Our close

connect with farmers provides us speedy, assured and continual access to the best quality paddy.

With the objective of catering to every pocket and taste, we acquire large stocks of paddy across

an extensive range that includes short, medium and long grain rice. Many varieties of coveted

Basmati that includes the delectable 1121 (longest grain Indian Basmati), excellent quality

regional varieties like Swarna, Samba Masoori, Govind Bhog, Sonam et al are available under

the SAEL brand names SUKHBIR, MAHAVAT and EKAM in variants like Platinum, Gold,

Silver to suit every palate and pocket.

Corporate Citizenship

The nature of our business provides enriching avenues whereby SAEL can play a critical role in

positively impacting farmers and other stakeholders such as consumers at the grassroots level. At

SAEL, we are always conscious that due to our proximity to the grassroots in the rural sector, we

are in a position to directly impact farmers' prosperity and bring about long term development

and progress in rural India both through manifest (direct) and latent (indirect) channels.

Business integrity

The importance of the social responsibility at SAEL as part of the overall vision and mission can

be gauged from the fact that CSR Committee comprises members of the top management.

Eminent members of the management such as Mr Sukhbir Singh (Chairman of the committee),

Mr Jasbir Singh ( Managing Director) and Dr Mrs Sanjeevan Bajaj ( Independent Director)

ensure that two percent of the net annual profits of SAEL are devoted to CSR activities.

CSR Initiatives and Activities

The manifest channels include giving fair and competitive prices to farmers for their produce,

elimination of middlemen, safeguarding of farmers' present and future by sustaining a steady,

credible and just procurement mechanism and pricing system. It includes preserving 'clean and

green' energy rich ecosystems for generations. Every day, SAEL is helping to eradicate farmer

distress, spreading education and awareness about better farming and eco-friendly agro

techniques and linking the farmers and consumers directly by enabling each to access better,
healthy, more price competitive and fulfilling employment, education and life choices.

In latent and indirect ways, SAEL is constantly engaging farmers and consumers in meaningful

ways. Through consumer connects, farmer melas, events, programmes and seminars organized

regularly, people living in rural areas are provided access to better farming and career avenues

etc. SAEL has established schools for children in rural areas and conduct drives connected with

health and hygiene awareness, education and empowerment which have helped in making the

community economically stronger, better educated and more aware about their rights and

responsibilities.

Regional Centres for Farmers

Established primarily for the purpose of creating awareness amongst the farming community

Centres act as local nodes whereby farmers are able to access to professional and expert

guidance and farming methods. Experts advice farmers on application of new farming techniques

and use of modern farming equipment and keep farmers updated with latest farming related

developments. The Regional Centres have played a crucial role in increasing productivity,

efficiency and brought prosperity and happiness to countless farmers.

Eradication of toxic weeds

The toxic lantana weed is a highly poisonous and fast spreading weed that has wrecked havoc in

many parts in North India. As part of the UN mission to eradicate the weed, SAEL has taken

cudgels to remove the weed on behalf of the Forest Department. The farming communities

directly reap the benefits of this SAEL initiative as lantana does not let anything else grow and is
very expensive to remove. Within a generic radius, SAEL has been successful in removing all

traces of lantana from the areas where it was most widespread and has stopped the future spread

of this menace.

Empowerment and employment initiatives

Acutely conscious of the need for social justice and economic empowerment of all communities,

SAEL has employed economically poor households and tribals, empowering them to sustain

themselves in these modern times.

Women empowerment and development

As a socially responsible corporate with huge reach into rural areas, SAEL advocates equal

employment opportunities for both men and women. Gender empowerment and women centric

schemes and programmes are regularly launched by the company. There are special hostel

facilities for women, with training centres to help them acquire and polish new skills. The

company also supports all differently abled people in the remotest part of U.P. They are provided

accommodation with free food supply, and are employed at various SAEL plants. SAEL has also

been supporting the oldest orphanage in India for over six decades.

Community impact

Innovation and sustainability are the two buzzwords that guide all endeavors at SAEL. Be it the

long term vision and mission of the company or issues pertaining to the daily functioning at

SAEL, sustainable development, ecological safeguards and community welfare are given
primacy over every other concern. The community impact of these 'ideas which have been put

into constant practice' have yielded quantifiable results which can are be easily gauged and

measured as they are visible in the community that has developed around each SAEL business

site. SAEL model of working gives back directly to the local economy. When compared with

other sources of energy, 70% of the energy produced is given straight back to the local grids.

Unlike coal operated plants, where ecologically fragile ecosystems are damaged beyond repair,

Scope

There is also a group who argues that the evaluation of employees for reward purposes, and

frank communication with them about their performance, are part of the basic responsibilities of

management. The practice of not discussing reward issues while appraising performance is, say

critics, based on inconsistent and muddled ideas of motivation.

In many organizations, this inconsistency is aggravated by the practice of having separate wage

and salary reviews, in which merit rises and bonuses are decided arbitrarily, and often secretly,

by supervisors and managers.

Importances

Performance appraisal is a continuous system of tracking and measuring performance against

agreed targets and identifying opportunities for improvement. In other words, performance

appraisal is a set of policies to achieve a shared vision of the organization to help each individual

employee to understand and recognize their contribution. But Performance Appraisal is also the

tool to determine and communicate to an employee about his/ her performance on the job,

ideally, establishing a plan of development for both parties.
