Genre & This is a poetry genre book because this book teaches children counting from

characteristics one to ten using the rhythm and rhyme in the book.

This is an informational genre book because it teaches children about numbers

and counting, adding to that, it teaches them about colors and some adjectives.

Why is it This book is age appropriate for children from the ages three and a half to five
appropriate and
years because it is teaching children counting in a clear sequenced way that is
interesting to 4-5-
clear for children. It has the number symbol, name, representation of the
year-old children?
number using dots and illustrations that represent the number. This would help

children in kindergarten count and connect between the illustrations and the

number. The books theme is interesting for children because it is about things

that are around the child in his environment or about things he would learn

3
about like animals, flowers, food and other things. The illustrations in the book

are appropriate for children and colorful and interesting to look at. The

illustration doesn't have so many details that would confuse the child and make

it hard for him to count, It is clear and simple. Adding to that is that the book is

appropriate for children from different cultures because the book does have

different pictures of children with different skin colors and hair colors which

would teach children also that they are all the same and it would lead the new

generation not to be racist to one skin color or culture.

The book is organized, and it flows easily. The numbers are organized in their

sequence so it wont complicate childrens understanding of the sequence of

numbers. Moreover, The book is written in a very simple, clear language that is

appropriate for children. The selection of the words is very accurate and simple

that would give children specifically the ideas and names of things. The book

isnt using so many unnecessary words. The words that are used are easy to

read, and it describes the picture on the same page so children wont be

confused, they would see what is described in the text. The words that are

written on every page is clear, simple. The book doesnt have long texts; it has

for simple lines on each page so it would be easy and not too complicated for

children to learn or understand.

How does it The book that I have chosen does support teaching and learning in many
support teaching
different ways. It supports teaching the language by making children listen at
and learning?
the beginning for someone while they are reading for them. This increases the
(Identify the LO
childs vocabulary capacity, develop their grammar. The second thing is that it
where possible)
teaches them early reading, children might recognize some letters or words and

they would practice reading them in the books itself. It also helps developing

writing skills because children can copy some letters or words to practice them.

4
Adding to that, it would develop their speaking skills because children would

discuss the illustrations or the text that is written with someone else which

would make them have a topic to talk about, and that would generate different

ideas.

The book also supports social and cultural values because the illustrations

represented in the books are appropriate for children from different cultures

and environments. The childrens pictures in the book have different skin tones

which would teach children not to discriminate against each other. Adding to

that that this book teaches children the concept of counting, colors, and

adjectives that describe different things such as the worms or rainbow.

Moreover, the book teaches children ethics because the way they wrote the text

make them aware that they should respect all of these things and it didnt give

them a negative idea of what theyve talked about in the book. The book also

gives children an idea of being inspired by the future of what they want to be,

in the book they mentioned astronauts so children would think about other jobs

that they would like to work in the future. It also shows collaboration and

children would be influenced with group collaboration or socializing because it

shows that a child is not always by himself, he needs friends or partners so he

could work with or be with to achieve something.

The book develops creativity and expression because The illustrations in the

book help in expanding childrens imagination. Children can imagine that they

are experiencing the different settings like seeing the sky or looking at an

actual ladybug or being in a birthday party. The book involves children in it

because it has some questions or phrases that are directly for the child so he

would answer or think about. It develops self-expression because children

while reading would show how they feel and they will give different facial

5
expressions and body expressions. For example, if they are reading about the

worms they will look like it is disgusting because the worms are slimy as

mentioned. It also makes them explain and talk about the different topics in the

book with their friends, and they would communicate and express what they

liked in the book or what they have learned so far.

Potential Some potential challenges involved in exploiting this book with children in
challenges
UAE schools would be on how to make them try to read or look at the book
involved in
since some children dont know English or they have just started learning the
exploiting this
book with 4-5- language. Some parents who dont know English make their children feel that
year-olds in UAE
the language is so hard and it is impossible to learn which makes the child take
schools
this idea from his parent and he would refuse trying. The teacher should try to

show the children the book, the illustrations in the book are interesting, and it

makes children want to look at the book. Giving an overview of the book

would make children want to read and explore the book more. Adding to that is

children prefer the Ipads on books so the teacher should limit childrens use of

Ipads and take advantage during the time to make them read books. The book

is interesting, and it teaches different concepts like reading, counting, and

colors at the same time, so it would be an advantage for the teacher because it

would make children practice on these concepts more and connect them with

real-life situations.

Title Pooky Loves Me!

Authors name Emily Bolam

Illustrators name Emily Bolam

Date of (original) 2013

publication

Genre & This is a realistic genre book because it is talking about the dog Pooky
characteristics
and what he does when he is with his owner. It is from the writers

imagination, but it can happen in real life because all of the settings in

the story and actions can happen in real life.

This is an informational genre book because it is teaching about the

characteristics of dogs and what they like to do or go. It also teaches the

child that he needs to be friendly with animals and that he should have a

good relationship with them.

Why is it This book is age appropriate for children from 3 and a half years to five
appropriate and
years because it has a simple clear language with short phrases that
interesting to 4-5-
children will understand. The book is introducing the dog Pooky as a pet,
year-old children?

7
and it gives facts about what the dog likes to do. It is like a journey for

Pooky and his owner, and it develops imagination in children because a

child would imagine that he has the dog Pooky or any other pet he would

like. The illustrations In the book are very suitable for children. There are

not so many details that would distract the childs mind while looking at

the pictures yet the illustrations are representing each place correctly

without putting things that are extraordinary. The book also is so

interesting for children because it has half pages that cover what the dog

likes to do. So at first, the child can guess and then turn the page to see

what it likes. It is an interactive book that generates thinking in children,

and it also can help in peer reading because children can read it together.

The language level in the book is very appropriate for children because it

is using simple, clear language with direct words that describe things.

The text describes the illustrations so the child can connect between what

is written and the picture. The text is also written in a clear font and size

so even children with some visual disabilities will be able to look at the

letters and identify them and read.

Moreover, the book is organized, and it flows easily. The bog and the

dog Pooky are having a walk, and each time they would be in a place.

The places are connected to each other so the child can relate, at first

they are walking in the street and then in the park and then they arrived

home. The setting of the story is clear; they didnt confuse the child with

being at first in the park and then at home and then street.

How does it The book that I have chosen does support teaching and learning in many
support teaching
different ways. It supports teaching the language by making children
and learning?

8
(Identify the LO listen to the story while at the same time they can relate to what is said
where possible)
from the pictures. They would learn new vocabulary words from the

illustrations; each page has one or two words that would describe one

thing that might be a new vocabulary word for kindergarten students. It

also helps in developing simple grammar rules. It also helps in teaching

early reading; children can recognize words or letters that they know and

they can practice reading and write them. Their speaking skills would

also develop because children would talk and discuss either with their

teacher or friend about the illustrations or what would Pooky do before

they flip the page. Children would get new information while discussing

other than the information that is mentioned in the book by benefiting

from each others information.

The book also supports social and cultural values because the

illustrations represented in the books are appropriate for children from

different cultures and environments. Their clothes and places are

appropriate, and they represent different cultures. The pet that is chosen

is also very common to have at home for so many families so it would

help before adopting a dog that the child knows these simple facts.

Moreover, the book teaches children ethics because the way they wrote

the text makes children aware that dogs are pets and we need to be kind

and friendly with them instead of being afraid or angry and start hitting

them or throwing things at them. It teaches a concept in Islam indirectly

that we need to be kind to animals and we need to take care of them. The

book also gives children an idea of what pets are and what do they do.

Children can think about other pets they would like to adopt, and they

also can help the poor animals in the shelters by adopting them.

9
The book develops creativity and expression because The illustrations in

the book help in expanding childrens imagination. Children can imagine

that they are with the dog or any other pet they would like, experiencing

the different situations that they will go through with their pet in different

settings. And it also helps in critical thinking because children would

imagine different situations that might happen and what would they be

able to do if they faced them.

It develops self-expression because children while reading would show

how they feel and they will give different facial expressions and body

expressions. For example, if the dog jumps in the puddle children might

act like they got wet from the water. It also makes them explain and talk

about the different situations in different places as mentioned in the

book.

Potential Some potential challenges involved in exploiting this book with children
challenges
in the schools would be that some people dont accept the idea of dogs
involved in
and they dislike dogs. So they would be against the idea of teaching
exploiting this
book with 4-5- children about dogs and that children can adopt them as pets because for
year-olds in UAE
them it would be something that they would never like to do.
schools
Another challenge would be that some parents who are not English

speakers would make their children feel that English is a very hard

language to learn so children would keep that in mind and they would

never try to learn the language. So the teacher should try to make them

look at the book or review it with them before, explain it and make them

try to read with help so it would make children love reading or love the

English language because it is easy to acquire.
