Q1. With a simple sketch diagram, explain the basic working principle of the following
temperature sensors:

a. Thermocouples (4 marks)
b. Resistance Temperature Detectors (4 marks)
c. Mention one (1) merit and one (1) demerit for each of the two temperature sensors
mentioned above. (4 marks)

(ii) Enumerate any three (3) conditions that may adversely affect the accuracy of an
electronic temperature sensor. (3 marks)
(iii) A platinum resistance thermometer has a resistance of 100 at 0oC and the value of
is 0.00385. Determine the resistance in operation at a temperature of 12.987 oC. (3marks)
(iv) Determine the value of 70oC in (i) oF (ii) K (2 marks)

(b) Determine the Reynolds number if a liquid flows through a diameter of 80mm with
velocity 5m/s having density of 1500 kg/m3 and viscosity of 0.9 kg/ms. State the type of
flow experienced by the liquid. (4 marks)
(c) The nozzle of a hose is lifted to a height of 1.3m above the ground and it has water
coming out of it at a speed of 1.9m/s. if the hose is now dropped lying on the ground, at
what speed does the water now come out of the hose. (Taking g= 9.81m/s2) (4 marks)

(b) Define the following terms:-
(i) Strain (1mark) (ii) Poissons ratio (1mark) (iii) Gauge Factor (1mark)
(c) (i) A strain gauge has a gauge factor of 2.2. It is glued to tensile test piece and the
resistance before straining is 119.8. The test piece is stretched and the resistance goes
up to 120. Calculate the strain and convert this into stress. Take E= 200GPa. (3 marks)

(ii) A Orifice meter has a meter constant of 0.004 m4N-0.5S-1. Calculate the flow rate
when a differential pressure of 200 Pa is obtained. (3 marks)
