WOOD BOX REPORT

1.BACKGROUND
Democritus proposed that matter could not be divided into smaller pieces forever. He

claimed that matter was made of small, hard particles . John Dalton created the very first atomic

theory. Dalton viewed atoms as tiny, solid balls. His atomic theory had 4 statements: Atoms are

tiny, invisible particles;.atoms of one element are all the same , atoms of different elements are

different. and compounds form by combining atoms.

J.J. Thomson discovered electrons. He also proposed the existence of a (+) particle. He

was the first scientist to show that the atom was made of even smaller things. Thomsons Model

said that atoms are made mostly out of (+) charged material ,and the (-) charged electrons are

found inside.

Ernest.Rutherford discovered protons and the nucleus. He showed that atoms have (+)

particles in the center, and are mostly empty space. He called these (+) particles protons. He

called the center of atoms the nucleus. He made an experiment in which he proved that

radioactive material emits beam of (+) alpha particles and that most of particles go through the

gold and that the atom is mostly empty space.

Niels Bohr improved on Rutherfords model. He stated that every atom has a specific

number of electron shells and he proposed that electrons move around the nucleus in specific

layers.
Chadwick discovered neutrons, he said that those particles haveno charge and he also

stated that neutrons are also found in the nucleus.

Work done since 1920 has changed the model. It says that there is a nucleus inside of the

atom that is made of neutrons and protons , and that a electrons cloud surround the nucleus.

What we did is related with nowadays model because we discovered a nucleus which is the

immovable object , the electrons cloud which is the movable object and after calculating the

density we discovered that the box has less density than a normal block of wood that indicates

that the box is empty like the atom is .

2.YOUR EXPERIMENT
To collect my data I used the following materials:

-Wood box -Movable object

-Immovable object -Balance

-A piece of paper to write down our data -Ruler

To find the movable object I shook the wood box and I listened to the sound it made when

it was hitting the walls of the box

To find the immovable object I listened to the sound of the impact of the movable object

with it.

To find the density of the box I used a balance to measure the mass, I used a ruler to

measure the volume and I wrote it down in a paper. After, I used that data and the formula

of density to calculate the density of the box using.

Finding the density of this box helped me constructing a model of the atom because I realized

that the box was empty because the density of the box was less than the density of a normal

block of wood.

3.DATA

I collect the following data:

1. The mass of th box: 1391g

2. The volume of the box: 5,022.6 g/cm3

3. The density of the box: 0.227g/cm3

D=m/v; 1391g/5,022.6g/cm3=0.277g/cm3

4.Movable object: A supper ball

5.The immovable object and her location: A block of wood and on side 1

4.ARGUMENT

Our model is correct because after comparing the density of the wood box and the density of a

normal block of wood , we found out that the density of the block is greater than the density of

the box because the box is empty, like atoms are. Also ,knowing that there is a movable and an

immovable object inside helped us constructing the model because the movable object is the

electrons of the atom because it is always moving around the immmovable object (nucleus) ,

like electrons spin around the nucleus, and the immovable object is the nucleus of the atom

because it is inside of the atom , it doesn't move and the electrons(immovable object) spin around

it.
