SPEECH AND INTELLECT AMONG RURAL,

URBAN, AND HOMELESS CHILDREN

An Empirical Study Edited by A. R. Luria

Foreword
Downloaded by [University of Arizona] at 11:13 11 June 2016

This is the second publication in our study of the speech re-

sponses of children. In the first publication we dealt with a
genetic 1 e.g., developmental - Ed.] problem: we attempted to
shed light on the mechanisms underlying the evolution of a s s o -
ciative processes in the child and to determine characteristics
of the child's speech and intellect a t various s t a g e s in his de-
velopment.
The problem dealt with in this second publication is different:
w e hope to describe how complex psychological p r o c e s s e s take
shape in the child under the influence of concrete social environ-
ments. Our subjects w e r e r u r a l children, children f r o m urban
working-class d i s t r i c t s , and homeless urchins. W e shall l a t e r
consider the question of how the specific social environment in-
fluences the chaxacter, the f o r m s , and the content of the speech
and cognitive processes of these children.

In dealing with this question, the present study t r i e s to go one

s t e p farther, and by studying children from different social
groups endeavors to characterize the collective experience of
children living in different, specific, social environments, de-
termine the most constant elements i n those environments, and
thus gather information of practical value for teaching, child-
rearing, and pedagogy.
The last study in this essay poses the problem of how children
think in their own and in a foreign language, and is hence of con-
siderable pedagogical interest for specific conditions in the
USSR.

All of the r e s e a r c h included in this e s s a y was completed in

1927, but publication was delayed, for technical reasons only.
This explains why certain problems that deserve especially
careful analysis a r e not treated. Some of the studies w e r e done
by students of the Academy of Communist Upbringing and by
educational psychologists working with the Psychological Labo-
ratory.
