Kinds of Sentences and Their Punctuation

Four Types of Sentences


1. Simple sentence
a. Independent sentence
b. Contains a subject and a verb to be complete
c. Ex: I like candy.
d. A dependent clause is not a sentence even though it contains a subject and verb, it
does not contain a complete though.
i. Ex: After the UMD Football team won many games last year
2. Compound sentence
a. Has two independent sentences that are joined by a coordinating conjunction,
conjunctive adverb, or a semicolon alone
b. FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
c. Ex: Gabi likes candy; however, Gabi likes vegetables too.
3. Complex sentence
a. Has one dependent clause joined to an independent sentence
b. Ex: Although Gabi loves candy, Gabi likes vegetables too.
c. Ex: Gabi, a college student, loves candy!
4. Compound-Complex sentence
a. Has two independent sentences joined to one or more dependent clauses.
