Instructional Purpose
This computer lab will be used for all grades, kindergarten through fifth, and each class will visit
the lab for at least 30 minutes each. For additional time, a Google Document will be used to
schedule, according to lab availability. The lab is set up in such a way that the perimeter of the
lab is free for the teacher to walk around to monitor students, whereas the middle of the lab
contains the desks and computers, and also can house all cords and surge protectors to
prevent students tripping over or unplugging devices. There will also be an area rug to the right
of the computers, as this would allow students to sit together as the teacher is leading
whole-group instruction using the SmartBoard. The area rug part of the classroom would only
be used for kindergarten through second grade. The iPad station along the back wall of the
computer lab would be a place for students to practice specific skills, such as letter formation for
younger students, and conducting a video interview for older students. This would also allow for
the devices to leave the lab, with teacher supervision, of course. According to the Office of
Information Technology from Colorado University, it is important to consider what type of
learning will occur in the computer lab. For this particular lab, I envision collaborative work,
instructional computing, and open computer use (University of Boulder Colorado, 2013).

Desktop Computers and Peripherals

The desktop computers are all PCs, as these are what students are most likely familiar with
from using computers in other parts of the school building as well as at home or at public
libraries. Additionally, PCs are more affordable, can be used in more places than Macs, and
are easily upgradeable. The 21 inch touchscreen desktop computers will be perfect for
students of all ages to use, and give them a choice of using the touch screen or the wireless
keyboard. Young students often get the mouse and keyboard tangled, so the wireless devices
will eliminate that problem. The only attachment to the desktop will be the headphones, which
are padded to ensure durability. There is no battery for the desktop computer, meaning that it
will last longer. By choosing new computers instead of ones that have been refurbished, there
will be more warranty. The color printer will be for teacher use only, or for older students with
permission from the teacher. Settings will be such that each computer cannot automatically
print, as young students may accidentally select print and waste ink. The color printer will be
used for projects, classroom posters and signs, and other necessary printouts. The document
camera will allow for the teacher to magnify homework or classwork assignments. An article
from education word mentions the importance of a work area for offline activities that can be
done in the computer lab. The circular table will be a place for students to work in cooperative
groups with iPads or offline materials.

Server Hardware
There will be no need for a server because as this school is part of a district, the server will be
held in a different, offsite location. As far as software, Microsoft Office would be installed on all
computers, giving students a place to type research papers, letters, take notes, give
presentations, create spreadsheets, and complete other assignments. DyKnow is a software
that would be installed on the teacher laptop. This classroom management software is one that
allows the teacher to see the screens of all students at any given time, with a feature to share
instruction between students and teachers (Peterson, 2016).

Networking
The Wi-Fi used throughout the rest of the school building will also be used in the computer lab.
The school district allows for students or teachers to access the Wi-Fi, as long as they have the
password, and many social media sites are blocked from student use. Students will be able to
use free websites such as Padlet, Kahoot, Google Hangouts, and Blogs in order to
communicate with others or conduct research.

Budget
Most of the allotted money was spent on the computers for the lab, as well as the laptop and
iPads. Furniture was necessary as a place to house all of the technology. Then, headphones
were purchased to ensure student privacy and to eliminate distractions. There are some
classroom necessities, include the clock, bulletin board to post rules and important information
as well as weekly vocabulary and student work, and a dry erase board that can be used to write
daily objectives and homework assignments, or passwords for young students. The $15,000
that is leftover in the budget will go to salaries or payments for the IT technician as well as hours
for the school technology liaison. The initial setup of the lab will be a one-time fee. This money
will also be used for staff development, as a stipend for teachers who attend, as well as to pay
the presenters for these sessions. These sessions will be based around Web 2.0 tools such as
Google Drive, ClassDojo, MyOn, and other tools that students and teachers will use both in
classrooms and in the computer lab.

Staffing For Maintenance/Security

The IT person for the county will likely be in charge of visiting the lab should any problems arise.
This IT person should visit the lab at least once a month to check for any maintenance issues,
and should be easy accessible for sudden problems that arise, via email or phone. The use of
the webcam will be the method used to first identify any security issues in the lab, but no
students should ever be in the lab without teacher supervision. The doors will remain locked
when the lab is not in use, and the audio visual cart can hold the five iPads and be locked up.
The use of the camera will also help to secure the lab, as this will be an added layer of
protection, as well as the DyKnow software that manages students browsing when they are in
the lab.
