Drinking the Spirit
Drinking the Spirit is a great opportunity for us to gather as adult Catholics to grow in our Catholic faith
and as a community. Each month we will have a different Catholic topic with a presenter. Questions and
discussions are encouraged. We are each responsible for our own "beverages" and food. This should be a

Feedback Request: Possible Mass Times Change
As Catholics, we should know that Mass attendance is the most important thing we do each weekend. Unfortunately, our current
schedule doesnt always encourage attendance during weekends where families are travelling, community events are occurring, and
outdoor activities take up much of peoples free time. The Saturday night Mass in particular regularly conflicts with community
activities, such as fundraising dinners and HS basketball games. This is why I am proposing to move the Saturday evening Mass to 7
PM on Sunday.
Here is the weekend schedule I propose, all on Sunday:
Malta 9AM and 7 PM
Dodson or Saco 11 AM
Unfortunately, it will not be as simple as just moving Saturday evening Mass to Sunday evening. Canon Law only allows a priest to
celebrate 3 Masses on a Sunday. Our current Sunday schedule is full due to the Masses in Dodson and Saco, as well as the Sunday
morning Mass in Malta. For this reason, the schedule change also includes changing the time of the Malta Sunday morning Mass to 9
AM and Mass at either Dodson or Saco at 11 AM. The 11 AM Mass would rotate between the two parishes (week 1 in Dodson,
week 2 in Saco, week 3 in Dodson, etc.). To be clear: neither Dodson nor Saco would have Mass every week in this proposed
schedule.
The loss of weekly Masses in both Dodson and Saco is the part that I dislike the most about this proposal. I have made it a priority to
have Mass at each parish every week for the past 7 years. One of my first changes upon arriving here was to return Saco to weekly
Masses. Unfortunately, I do not see any other option, as moving one mission to Saturday night would still have the conflicts with
community activities, especially during HS basketball season.
One thing I ask: please dont reject it just because its a change, but do consider if this is whats best for the parishes and
parishioners. I know people will be upset because their Mass will change, or the missions will no longer have weekly Mass. I still
ask for you to prayerfully consider if this will be good for the parishes or not, whether you personally like it or not.
Again, I ask for feedback, and I ask that it be in writing. Whether via email at frcory@saintmarysmalta.org or in a letter sent to the
parish or placed in the collection basket, written feedback will make all parishioners desires that much easier for myself and the
Parish Council to discern.
To be clear, this schedule proposal is not cast in stone. However, we do need to consider whether or not our current schedule is the
best for making Mass readily available to the largest number of parishioners.
