Project-based Learning

Project-based learning is an inquiry-based unit of study that begins with a burning question that
students will answer through research, collaboration, and creative expression. Students eventually
will need to present their findings to an authentic audience of both their peers and members of the
community. Their final presentation is an opportunity to synthesize the information they have found
and share it in a meaningful way. In addition to addressing the speaking and listening standards,
project-based learning builds community while addressing all four of the 21st-century C's: critical
thinking, communicating, collaborating, and creating. Mdm Tan divide student in groups and gives a
specific natural disaster to each group. Give the student time to find the information regarding the
natural disaster and when the time is up, let the student present their findings.

Using ICT as Teaching Material

There are various websites that provide materials such as videos, pictures or notes. For example
Youtube, British Council and so on. Mdm Tan can use these sources to teach the topic natural
disasters by showing video on flood, animation how landslide occur or picture of tsunami. Ask the
student what can they see from the multimedia. These will attract students interest and attention
to the class. Thus the learning become more effective.

Forum

Organise a forum about a natural disaster. Student given time to find information about natural
disasters they know and then share their findings during the forum. This enhances communication
and collaboration which are the skills needed in 21st century learning.

Cloud-based Learning

There are various cloud-based learning websites available nowadays such as OLL, FrogVLE, Edmodo
and so on. Mdm Tan may use one of these as follow up activities for the student outside the class.
