## Unit Title: Name:

Ratios and Proportional Relationships Natacha Woodson

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, equations, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional
relationships. (CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2.B)
Represent proportional relationships by equations. (CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.2.C)
Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems. (CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.3)
Big Ideas/Unit Goals:
EQ: How do you create the best dish using math?
How can math be applied during grocery shopping?
Students will be able to understand how to compute sales tax, discounts, and percent changes related to the total.
How are proportions useful for conversions of different units?
Students will be able to understand the unit rate of different units of measurements.
How can proportional relationships and equations determine the best cooking temperatures and times?
Students will be able to determine and adjust to the best cooking temperature and times based on proportional relationships and
equations.
Unit Summary:

In the ratios and proportional relationships unit, we will examine ratios and proportions through the lens of cooking, or baking. Some
particular lenses of examination are grocery shopping, unit conversions, and the dimensions of oven cooking. With the grocery shopping
lens, students will solve problems involving percent off, along with the balance of ingredients which will equate to multi-step ratio and
percent problems. Following, students will be presented with a variety of approaches to identify the constant of proportionality, or unit
rate, in the conversions lens. Within the dimensions of oven cooking lens, students will use proportional equations to determine the
appropriate oven temperatures and cooking times. To demonstrate their comprehension of the unit, students will be required to cook, or
bake, a dish based on each lens. By the completion of this unit, students will have gained one scope of the connection between cooking,
or baking, and mathematics.
