Description of Site
Bennett’s Mill Middle School is located in Fayetteville, GA, which is the county seat for Fayette
County, GA. Bennett’s Mill was opened in August of 2007 to accommodate expected growth due to new
development in the area. The school population consists of 541 students for the 2008-2009 school year.
The school currently sits at half capacity. The total number of teachers is forty-three, with three
administrators, one media specialist, and twenty-one support staff members. With the school having
been recently built, a large focus was placed on incorporating technology into the building. In addition to
a computer lab, the media center contains thirty Internet assisted computers. Each classroom has two to
three computers for student use and is also connected to the Internet. Teachers are provided Tablet PCs
The media center is located in the main portion of the building directly across from the school office.
Although the media center is located near the sixth grade wing, it is easily accessible by all grade levels.
The media center houses a collection of 12,112 titles. In addition to print media, the media center
contains 332 audio-visual titles. The audio-visual collection can be easily viewed in each classroom via
In addition to the print and audio-visual materials, the media center provides several outside resources
that students can access from home or on campus. These resources are used frequently by students to
conduct research. In addition, many science and social studies teachers require that students use and cite
these resources when completing class projects. Below is a list from the school’s webpage showing the
For the collection development plan, I chose to focus on the seventh grade social studies Georgia
Performance Standards (GPS). These standards are based on world geography with a focus on Africa, the
Middle East, and Southern and Eastern Asia. The 2008-2009 school year will mark the second year this
strand has been fully implemented in Georgia schools. In addition to the Georgia Performance Standards
in social studies, students are expected to read social studies related books as part of the twenty-five book
reading requirement.
At Bennett’s Mill Middle School, the seventh grade is comprised of 172 students. There are a total of
seventeen seventh grade teachers. Of those seventeen teachers, five of them teach at least one class of
social studies. One social studies teacher has two accelerated classes with a total of 40 students. The
remaining 132 students are taught a regular paced curriculum. Each class has a capacity of 18-22
students. There are two special needs students who are not participating in an inclusion program at this
time; their handicaps are severe in nature and require them to have full-time aides. The following table
provides specific data on the seventh grade student population at Bennett’s Mill Middle School.

Curriculum Review
During seventh grade, students focus on the second year of a two-year study in a world area studies
unit. The main areas for focus include Africa and Asia. The unit is broken into three main geographical

areas: Africa, Southwest Asia (Middle East), and Southern and Eastern Asia. Within each of the three
main geographical areas are four main domains which consist of the following understandings:
At Bennett’s Mill Middle School, the social studies teachers began the year with a unit on Southwest
Asia (Middle East) with a primary focus on the history, religions, and economies of this region. The
culminating project assigned to students during this unit is the creation of a PowerPoint presentation.
This presentation involves researching a specific country within the Middle Eastern region with regard to
that country’s history, current political and economic structure, major religion or religions, culture, and
physical characteristics.
The second unit, begun in November and continued through March, is on Africa. During this unit,
students create a map of Africa and label the countries and major topographical features. Students also
research various tribes and create an African mask that is representative of one particular tribe. Another
major focus area in the Africa unit is the creation of charts showing the correlations between infant
mortality rate, life expectancy, and access to doctors or healthcare among specific African countries.
The final unit begins in March and carries through the end of May; this unit is on Southern and Eastern
Asia. A major emphasis is placed on China’s history and its role in the modern world. Other topics of
focus include causes of the Vietnam War and reasons for the United States’ involvement. During this
unit, students create their own country by either using the computer or hand-drawing on a poster. The
map of the student-created country must include major physical features, the location of major natural
resources, and predominant climatic conditions. Students must then identify the regions of the country in
which the population would be distributed, along with an explanation of why people would live and work
The next two pages contain the main strands of the Georgia Performance Standards in regard to
Collection Evaluation
One method used to evaluate a media center’s title collection is from a collection-centered approach.
The primary focus for this evaluation is the 300 and 900 section of the media center since most of the
seventh grade social studies titles are found in these sections. The books in the 300 and 900 sections are
immediately apparent to students upon entering the media center and are located in an easily accessible
shelving unit. The Dewey Decimal section is the first section students see when they enter the media
center. The shelves are labeled according to the main sections which make finding the correct section
easy. The media center is only a year and a half old so there is plenty of open shelf space. The open
space is visually appealing and will allow for the acquisition of future titles without the shelves becoming
over-crowded. After choosing several books from the 300 and 900 sections dealing with the seventh
grade social studies area of focus, the books were determined to be in new condition. After opening and
viewing the content of the books, it appeared several of the books had not been checked out or were
recent additions to the collection. The books are all labeled with the call number, Lexile number, and
Reading Counts grade equivalency and point value. Another area examined was the reference section.
The reference section is in the rear of the library directly behind the Dewey Decimal section. Books are
arranged in a pleasing manner and all materials are accessible to students and teachers alike. Books are
displayed at eye level and relate to various content areas with thirty-eight titles pertaining to the seventh
Using a specific Destiny card catalog search on the seventh grade Georgia Performance Standards in
social studies, the search indicated that the majority of the selection pertaining to Africa, the Middle East,
and Asia are located in the Dewey 300 and 900 sections. The 300 section is comprised of 522 titles; 47 of
those titles pertain to the Georgia Performance Standards in social studies for the seventh grade. Most of
the titles pertaining to the social studies GPS are located specifically in the 300-309 Dewey on social
sciences. The average publishing date of the 300 section is 2003. Upon examining the circulation records
for the 300 section, it was determined that 287 titles have been checked out this year.
Collection Evaluation 8
The 900 section is comprised of 1,932 titles; 133 of those titles pertain to the GPS in social studies for
the seventh grade. The average publishing date of the 900 section is 2002. Upon examining circulation
records for the 900 section, the report indicated a total of 944 titles have been checked out this year. The
two main sections in the 900 range containing books related to the GPS strands in social studies are the
950-959 range on general history of Asia or the Far East and the 970-979 range dealing with the general
history of North America. Surprisingly, there are only 14 titles in the 960-969 section that pertain to the
general history of Africa which is one of the main strands in the seventh grade GPS standards.
The following chart shows the total number of titles, the average publishing date of each section, and
the number of titles in the GPS strand for seventh grade social studies in the following categories: Dewey
discussion with the media specialist regarding the low circulation of books in the 300 and 900 sections, it
was revealed that very few students or teachers utilize the print resources when conducting research for
class projects or presentations. While speaking with several of the social studies teachers, some indicated
that they have the media specialist pull books from the collection that meet specific standards and place
them on a cart for classroom use. The books from this pull-out method are counted as one circulation and
are usually kept in the teacher’s classroom for a period of several months. Another reason for the low
circulation is that the teachers do not require the students to cite print references. The main reference
sources used by students and teachers are non-print and, more specifically, school provided web
databases such as CultureGrams, the History Resource database from Gale, or teacher specified websites.
While it appears that there are a total of 234 total titles that provide information on the GPS for
seventh grade social studies, this averages out to be only two books per seventh grade student. In
addition, many of the titles did not have an available Reading Counts test. This is considered a deterrent
to most students as they are required to meet a twenty-five book goal throughout the year and provide a
Reading Counts test record as proof of reading. Teachers require students to read two non-fiction books
throughout the year, but do not specify the topic of the book to be read. Furthermore, most students
choose lower level books as opposed to books in the topic area which tend to be of a higher reading level.
Most of the book titles pertaining to the seventh grade world area studies unit at Bennett’s Mill Middle
School are at grade level or above grade level in reading comprehension. This presents an additional
obstacle to those students who are struggling with grade-level reading proficiency.
On a positive note, most of the titles represented in the seventh grade social studies unit are
multicultural in nature. The content area lends itself to provide much diversity in terms of culture,
religion, and geography. In addition to the multicultural aspect of the titles, the collection provides
several titles focusing on women in these regions. The two primary magazines subscriptions the media
center carries dealing with the world areas unit are National Geographic and National Geographic for
Kids.
Collection Evaluation 10
The non-print collection contains a total of twelve DVDs that pertain to the seventh grade GPS in
social studies. The limited quantity of the non-print collection is due to several factors. One factor is that
new non-print titles have yet to be purchased due to the concentration on stocking a new library with print
titles as the first priority. Another factor is the short time frame allotted to teachers in which to show and
provide for discussion of non-print materials. The third factor is that administration does not view non-
Budget Summary
A total of six vendors were used in the creation of the following materials order. The budget total
came to $3895.47. Included in this total is $438.50 to purchase large maps depicting Africa, Asia, and the
Middle East. Other significant purchases included a video order totaling $551.30. Vendor orders are
separated from each other in the following manner. Under the name of the vendor is a brief outline of
how the title information is organized according to the following descriptions: Dewey, title, author,
publisher, year, and reviews. Note: There may be a slight difference in the order of the title information
from each vendor. Spanish language titles will be highlighted in yellow. Books providing lower reading
In conclusion, numerous factors need to be taken into consideration when creating a materials order
for meeting the requirements of the seventh grade social studies GPS.
Due to the focus on major world religions, books need to be purchased dealing with
different religions in an unbiased nature.
Selection of titles that are current are important as the regions are under constant change.
Select fiction books either written about the focus areas or that contain characters from
the specified cultures.
Provide titles that are of a lower reading level for students with lower reading lexile
ranges.
While the library currently contains Worldbooks on the topic areas, a set of Junior
Worldbooks would help to meet the needs of lower level readers.
Collection Evaluation 11
Include visually appealing books depicting the cultural diversity and specific features of
each region.
Provide books on different African tribes that showcase the tribe’s art or artifacts and
what the symbols and colors symbolize for each particular tribe (i.e. African masks).
Include titles that focus on different major world economies and forms of government.
Include titles that represent how teens live in different cultural regions so that students
can relate to and learn about youth from different countries who are their own age.
Provide several Spanish language titles for ESOL students.
Select titles that teach students how to create a budget and make good financial decisions
(one of the GPS requirements for seventh grade social studies unit).
Purchase large maps of the major areas of study so students can view physical
representations of the areas.
Include DVD selections based on reviews that relate to the seventh grade GPS social
studies unit.
