Summary

Progress monitoring is the process of monitoring student growth and achievement and using the

data to alter instruction in a way that allows students to learn and make progress. Technology has
DIGITAL PROGRESS MONITORING TOOLS 16

helped to make the assessments used for progress monitoring more engaging and motivating for

students. In a study done on the effectiveness of Sumdog, it was found that students who spent 1

hour a week using the program were making three times the progress in a certain time frame.

Imagine Learning is another progress monitoring tool that is also a curriculum that has had

similar results with its effectiveness. In addition to being more engaging and motivating using

gamification, there are other tools that are motivating and engaging in different ways. For

example, Seesaw is a student digital portfolio that is not a game. However, it does allow students

to post their work to a global audience and interact/collaborate with each other. This is

motivating and engaging in its own way.

The reason I chose these 4 tools is because they are definitely engaging and motivating, but they

also show the data. It is important that we can easily understand the data from our progress

monitoring tools and use it. The assessment needs to be purposeful, and the data also needs to be

purposeful. Data is only of use if we use it to alter our instruction and meet the needs of our

diverse students. Using these types of digital progress monitoring tools not only motivates and

engages students, but it also gives us more time to use the data to help our students be successful.
