NONLINEAR FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS
Nonlinear Finite Element Analyses (considering Material and Geometric
nonlinearities) have been carried out on adhesively bonded joints.A suitable
viscoplastic constitutive model for the adhesive material has been
implemented and parametric studies have been carried out on lap
joints(single/double/scarf) to understand the interface behaviour. This study
is of interest not only in Structural Engineering(Civil/ Aerospace) but also in
Mechanical/Automobile Engineering. Especially,for Civil Structures,this
study is of interest in rehabilitation and retrofitting of aging structures, where
adhesively bonded plates(composites/metals) offer great promise. This study
has also some relevance in Biomechanics and Biomedical Engineering.

In addition, 3-D study also been carried out on Double lap joints and Scarf
joints , a topic which has not been investigated much in the
past.Another, topic of great practical relevance addressed in this investigation
is adhesively bonded patch repair.Though, these topics on scarf joints and
patch repair have been briefly investigated here, this study is of great
significance in driving future investigation.

INTEGRATED FORCE METHOD(IFM) BASED FEM
The Integrated Force Method (IFM) is a recent development in
Computational Structural Mechanics.IFM is a re-formulation of the
Classical force method for automated computation.Originally conceptualized
by Dr.Patnaik(a Scientist from Bangalore) in seventies, has now attracted
attention of researchers due to its superior performance as compared to
Displacement based finite-elements,in many practical situations.
Page 13
Page
14
Integrated Force Method (IFM) has been invented by rectifying the
shortcomings of conventional Force-methods,thus making it convenient for
computer implementation. The method has evolved over the years with its
own Variational Principle. It has greater potential than conventional FEM
for predicting stresses with far better accuracy.Research effort would be
directed to develop algorithms for Sensitivity Analysis of Plate/Shell
elements based on IFM .
GROUP D
Page 15
Research has been initiated in the department in the area of CDM with
reference to Ductile Damage modeling.Three isotropic ductile damage
models have been developed and integrated with elastoplasticity in the
framework of Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis.Effort has also been put to
develop efficient computational algorithms , Illustrations have been made to
bring out the potential of CDM in structural integrity assessment.
Page 16
The investigation has adressed Computational issues of Damage-coupled
Elastoplasticity.Several algorithms have been developed and coded in the
framework of nonlinear FEM ,particularly for plane-stress,plane strain and
three-dimensional continuum problems. The main contribution made here can
be outlined as follows:(1)Integration of constitutive equations for damage
coupled elastoplasticity and their consistent linearization.Backward Euler
integration scheme has been used and by consistent linearization of update
equations, consistent tangent modulus has been obtained.
Page
12
The algorithms have been implemented in a nonlinear fem framework and
their accuracy is verified.A reduction of the general 3-D algorithm to special
case of plane stress has also been worked out.Generalized mid-point as well
as operator split algorithms have been derived in the context of damage
coupled elastoplasticity.Several examples have been included for illustration
including those for cyclic loading.(2)The issues related to solution of
nonlinear equations in the present context have been addressed. Here,The
Newton-Raphson and The Modified Newton-Raphson methods have been
used.In equilibrium path tracing strategy, the following schemes have been
adopted:(i)Load control,(ii)Displacement Control and (iii)Arc length
scheme.Advantages and disadvantages of different path-tracing schemes have
been investigated for damage coupled elastoplasticity.(3)The formulation has
been extended for Large deformation elastoplasticity coupled with
damage. The Updated Lagrangian formulation has been derived based on
virtual work principle and consistent stress-strain conjugated at various stages
of deformed configurations have been identified. The issues related to
consistent updated lagrangian formulation is discussed.Green-Nagadi stress
rate has been adopted from the objectivity consideration ,wherein integration
is carried out by transfering the variables to a rotationally neutralized
configuration.Kinematics of elastoplastic deformation is based on additive
decomposition of deformation rate tensor. The algorithms thus developed have
been coded and verified with appropriate benchmark examples.

CDM BASED PROGRESSIVE FAILURE ANALYSIS OF
COMPOSITES
Progressive failure of FRP laminates is investigated in the framework of
nonlinear Finite Element Analysis using CDM and expressing the failure
phenomena through Damage Evolution Models. Damage Models have
been developed taking into account coupling of various damage modes of
failure in FRP composites.
Progressive Failure Analysis(PFA) algorithms have been developed and
verified with available bench-mark examples.Further, the algorithms have been
extended to Fatigue Failure analysis & S-N Curve generation. The damage-
coupled PFA have been illustrated by analyzing various cases of practical
importance,such as:Adhesively bonded FRP lap joints,FRP strengthened
beams,Yield-line pattern generation as well as PFA of fully composite
structural systems.

and can create defects in the structure if not properly executed. Hence the use
of adhesively bonded FRP for strengthening purpose in lieu of conventional
methods is superior due to better force transfer mechanism and other
advantages. However method is yet to become mainstream application due to
a number of economical and design related issues. From structural mechanics
point of an important concern regarding the effectiveness and safety of the
method is the potential of brittle debonding failure. Such failures unless
adequately considered in the design process, may significantly decrease the
effectiveness of the strengthening or repair application.
Use of FRP composite materials for strengthening and repair of structural
members has become an increasingly popular area of research and application
in the last decade. Experimental investigations with regard to different
schemes of strengthening of structural member (steel as well as concrete) are
reported in literature. Many experimental investigations have been reported in
literature illustrating the effectiveness of adhesively bonding FRP to steel
beams to increase the flexural strength. Several configurations of strengthened
beams (undamaged and damaged) have been tested. In most of the
experimental investigations conducted the stiffness and strength had improved
considerably.
However, extensive investigation is required in order to understand failure
mechanism of FRP-strengthened system. In the cases of experimental
investigation where failure occurred it has been observed that the cohesive
failure of the adhesive is most prominent and it happened quickly.
Page
15
Delamination of FRP is another mode failure but not as severe as cohesive
failure of the adhesive interface. Finite Element Simulation to study such
failure phenomena has been initiated.

GENERAL STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING
Concept of Virtual Testing /Numerical Simulation
In general Civil engineering structures are one of a kind and never
duplicated.Unlike in mechanical or aerospace industry possibilities exist to
carryout prototype testing in the laboratory, the concept is rather impractical
for civil engineering structures.Recent development in numerical simulation
techniques(eg.using Finite Element Method),structures of any size and shape
real or virtual can be studied provided adequate information about the
material and loading is known. This leads to a new concept of Virtual Testing
of Civil Structures.Attempt has been made to numerically model study
behaviour of several civil engineering structures and components in the
past. The exercise includes proper constitutive modeling of
construction/fabrication materials. The investigation carried out in this context
can be seen under following categories of publications:
Finite Element Modelling of Civil Structures( eg.Building etc.)
Constitive Modeling of Civil Engineering
materials(Plasticity,ViscoplasticityDamage,Fracture etc)
Adhesively Bonded Structural Systems(Strengthening/Retrofitting using
FRP))

The new practice is largely oriented to the use of advanced systems, materials
and technologies for both increasing the load bearing capacity of structural
elements, and improving when required, the structures seismic
performance.In this framework,the emerging smart-materials ,MEMS, FRP,
innovative metals(stainless steels, copper, titanium and aluminium alloys) have
great potential.

Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are attractive for use in civil
engineering applications for use in civil engineering applications due to their
efficiency in strength and stiffness, resistance to corrosion and lighterness.
Their application is of most importance in the renewal of constructed facilities
infrastructure such as buildings, bridges, pipelines etc. Recently, their use has
been increased in the rehabilitation of concrete structures, mainly due to their
tailorable performance characteristics, ease of application and low life cycle
costs. These characteristics and the success of structural rehabilitation
measures have led to the development of new lightweight structural concepts
utilizing all FRP systems or new FRP/concrete composite systems. In case of
unreinforced masonry walls strengthening can be accomplished very
economically with thin advanced composite wall overlays.
The ongoing research on the applications of FRP composites in strengthening
of unreinforced masonry would be continued with particular emphasis on the
studies on out-of-plane behavior .

The field of smart materials and structures is emerging rapidly with
technological innovations appearing in engineering
materials,sensors,actuators,image processing and integration
methodologies.Recent advances in this evolvolving area have lead to the
development of new techniques for real-time monitoring of Structural
Conditions which has great potential for applications in Structural Health

with embedded smart sensors.
Suitability of composite-based smart-sensors for civil structures
Sensitivity based Sensor/actuators positioning in civil structures
Damage study of smart-materials with distributed sensors using
cdm.
Research would be directed in this area along with the areas of AI/ANN
which have neen adopted for Structural Damage Assessment /Structural
Health Monitoring..
Finite Element Development based on Integrated Force Method
Integrated Force Method (IFM) has been invented by rectifying the
shortcomings of conventional Force-methods,thus making it convenient for
computer implementation. The method has evolved over the years with its
own Variational Principle. It has greater potential than conventional FEM
for predicting stresses with far better accuracy.Research effort would be
directed to develop Plate/Shell elements based on IFM and further extend it
to Sensitivity analysis.
Meshless Methods
The recent developments on EFG and other Meshless methods are very
curiously being monitored especially to examine their potential for easy
handeling of nonlinear problems ! It would be tempting to get into this area
in due course provided it has been shown to have greater demonstrated
potential than conventional FEM.

New Technology & Heritage Structures
Preservation of Heritage Structures with FRP
In the last few years advanced composites (FRP) have gained considerable
worldwide interest and growing acceptance in the construction industry. The
interest in FRP materials has been growing rapidly by innovative
manufacturing technologies(eg.pultrusion, filament winding,three-
dimensional braiding etc), adhesively-bonding technology as well as
significantly more stable, stronger and cheaper constituents(fibers and
resins). The increasing demand for effective and cost-efficient repair and
strengthening techniques for civil infrastructure has generated a growing
interest for FRP-based technologies, characterized by speed and ease of
implementation and better durability if compared to traditional
technologies.
FRP composites have shown excellent potential to significantly improve
performance and durability of new or deteriorated constructed facilities. The
basic issues related to the short-term performance of structures
repaired/upgraded with FRP composites have been subject of a considerable
amount of experimental as well as theoretical research.Several commercial
or demonstration projects have also been completed in recent years.
However, a strategic research plan is required for basic understanding and
engineering background for use of FRP in construction.
Attempt would be made to obtain funding to carryout investigation of
application of FRP in resoration and strengthening of heritage structures.
Investigation would also be directed towards Structural Health Monitoring
(SHM) of heritage structures using New Technology.
Structural-Health-Monitoring of Heritage Structures would be another
area of research with great application potential .
Book-Writing Exercise:
Would be Interested to take-up book-writing in the areas of my specialization
,in due course. The topic of interest would be:Continuum Damage
Mechanics,Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis, FRP Composites in Civil
Engineering and a general topic Revisiting Pedal Power for sustainable
technology.

9.3.Views on Engineering Education
(Would be interested to share my thoughts at appropriate forum)
1.Present Engineering Education : Some suggestions for reforms
This is based on my paper presented at Int.Conf. on Technical Educationin
21st Century.January 1998.Some ideas were high-lighted on integration of
engineering education at all levels(Diploma/Degree/Post-Graduation).It was
also suggested that introduction of a Pre-professional course( Pre-
Engineering with Physics,Chemistry,Maths and Computers shifted from
regular engineering curriculum)would be more meaningful. Thus the
engineering degree programme can be reduced to 3 years
duration. However, students who have undergone Pre-engineering course
would qualify to appear for exams like JEE or CET.Those, who cant qualify
would still be useful for Software Industry !
Page 43
2. Double Shift Programmes: In order to utilize the education-infrastructure
more efficiently, good engineering colleges nationwide should be
encouraged to have double-shift system. This would not only provide
education opportunities to large number of youngsters but also there would
be more employment opportunities for engineering-teachers.I feel this is one
feasible solution tackle increasing employment with rising population. This
would also help to train large number of technical man power required in
the country as well as in the global market.
