HUBER+SUHNER FIBER OPTICS 1

Introduction

Fused couplers
Passive optical couplers are branching devices with more than 2 fiber ports. Such components distribute the opti-
cal power among fibers in a predetermined way. They combine (coupler) or divide (splitter) optical signals in
optical networks. These optical components are used in central offices, customer premises and in outside plant
applications. H+S couplers are manufactured by the fused biconical tapered (FBT) technology. On request the
in and outgoing ports of the coupler can be connectorized with all types of connectors. Couplers can be inte-
grated into different organiser trays, modules, panels and subassemblies (see System catalogue LISA).

Fused WDMs
Fused Wavelength Division Multiplexers are 1x2 branching devices used to combine or to divide two different
wavelengths. Due to their manufacturing technology, FBT WDMs have a sinusoidal transfer function. Their main
features are low excess loss, high isolation and high reliability over a narrow wavelength window.

Fiber optic attenuators

Fiber optic attenuators are devices that reduce signal power in fiber optic links by inducing a fixed loss. They are
used to control the power level of optical signals at the outputs of light sources and electrical-to-optical (E/O)
converters. They are also used to test the linearity and dynamic range of photo sensors and photo detectors.
Fiber optic attenuators use different methods of attenuation, such as absorption or scattering.

Quality assurance and traceability

Each device is identified by a serial number so it is possible at any time to identify the manufacturing param-
eters, the workstation, the operator, the material used and the final characterisation measurements.

called splitter.
The percentage of light transferred to a receiving output port with respect to the
total power of all output ports.
Coupling ratio P1 50%
P0 100%
P2 50%

Unit for measuring the relative strength of a signal. Power level referenced in

decibels to a microwatt.
Demultiplex The process of separating optical channels.
Also referred to as nearend crosstalk, it is the amount of power observed at a
given input port with respect to an initial input power.
Directivity
P0

A sum of attenuation expressed in dB for a particular path through a component.
Insertion loss includes excess loss, splitting loss and polarisation effects.

Also referred to as far-end cross-talk or far-end isolation. Predominantly used in
reference to WDM products, it is a measure of light at an undesired wavelength

Polarisation Dependent Loss (PDL) Variation of insertion loss with respect to SOP (State Of Polarisation).
Light that is reflected back along the path of transmission, from either the cou-
