THEORY OF ELASTICITY & PLASTICITY
(Structural Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 60
Answer any FIVE questions.
All questions carry equal marks.

*****

1 Derive the Hooks law from the linear relations between the components of stress and strain.
By using this law, derive the equation for the modulus of the rigidity.

2 Explain the plane stress problems and plane strain problems with examples and neat figures.

D
A uniformly distributed load q is applied on the narrow rectangular beam of unit width and
supported at the ends. Derive the equations for bending of the beam. Also assume the
suitable boundary conditions and solve it.

L

R
The stress distribution is symmetrical about a centroidal axis. Derive the generalized stress

O
distribution function. From this, derive the stress distribution function for the following cases:
(i) There is no hole at the origin.
(ii) The radial direction and circumferential direction for a hollow cylinder subjected

W
to uniform pressure on the inner and outer surfaces.
(iii) Find the maximum pressure for the cylinder which is subjected to internal pressure only
(po=0).

U

T
The state of stress at a particular point relative to the xyz coordinate system with respect to
the xyz system is given by the stress matrix.

N
J
MPa.

Determine the nominal stress and the magnitude and direction of the shear stress on a
surface intersecting the point and parallel to the plane given by the equation 2x - y + 3z = 9.

6 Derive the equilibrium along with the boundary conditions and compatibility conditions for the
three dimensional Cartesian coordinates.

7 Explain and derive the equation for torsion of the hollow shaft.

8 Explain the yield criterion of the plastic material with Bauschinger effect and hysteresis loop.
