Answer to study questions:

1. The significance of screening is due to these following reasons. Screening is the first operation at
any wastewater treatment works. It will protect the downstream plant and equipment from any
possible damage, unnecessary wear & tear, pipe blockages and the accumulation of unwanted
material that will interfere with the required wastewater treatment processes.
Compliance to standard size requirement for product marketability
Control of quality that is removal of coarse contaminants
Laboratory analysis for evaluating the comminution operations in the plant and optimizing the
desired properties expressed through the size of the products and raw materials.
2. Screening is very useful in wastewater treatment, Cement industry, Pharmaceuticals and
cosmetics, metallurgy and mining industries food industry and ceramic industry.
3. Aperture- It is the clear space between the individual wires of the screen.
Mesh number- it refers to the number of apertures per linear inch. It is a nominal figure that
does not permit accurate computation of the screen openings without knowledge of the wire
sizes.
Screen Interval- It is the relationship between the successive sizes of the screen openings in
series. The usual value for the area of the openings in any one screen in the series is exactly
twice that of the openings in any one screen in the series is exactly twice that of the opening in
the next smaller screen.
