ASSIGNMENT
2. GEOREFERENCING

OBJECTIVE: To georeference the existing scanned image.

SOFTWARE: QGIS

PROCEDURE:
Georeferencing in QGIS is done via the Georeferencer GDAL plugin. to enable it go
to Plugins, Manage and Install Plugins and enable the Georeferencer GDAL plugin.

The plugin is installed in the Raster menu. Click on Raster-Georeferencer -


Georeferencer to open the plugin.

The Georeferencer window opens with GCP table at bottom. Then open raster and
specify coordinate reference system. It will be loaded in the window.

Click on Add Point in the toolbar and assign coordinates to some points on this map.
For this enter the coordinates (X-longitude and Y-latitude).

Notice the GCP table with assigned coordinates. More the points, more is the
accuracy.

Go to Transformation settings and choose the Transformation type as Thin Plate


Spline, Name the output raster and make sure that Load in QGIS when done option
is checked. CLick OK.

Then start georeferencing.

Once the process is finished, the georeferenced layer is loaded in QGIS. Then save the
raster file. Assign UTM projection in the end.

CONCLUSION: Georeferencing is the process of associating an image with spatial


locations. This helps in measuring or computing and analysing the real world features.
