Objectives:

To develop a project idea for our Mentorship project.

To finish the research plan for our project along with the other various forms needed.

To construct and test multiple electromagnets.

Materials and Methods

The project that we decided on was to create a device which would repel animals using

the natural magnetic navigation mechanism many animals have. This project was finally decided

on after weeks of introductory research and deliberation. After coming to a consensus on our

current project idea we then started doing the required documentation for mentorship. This

included the Experimental Design, Article Summaries, and a Research Plan.

The first thing we built was a small electromagnet to see how strong of a magnetic field

we could produce with the materials we had. We used a soft iron rod, insulated wire, two AA

batteries, and electric tape. The wire was wrapped around the iron rod 110 times and taped the

ends of the rod so the wire stayed tight. The AA batteries were taped together in a line, so the

positive end of one is touching the negative side of each battery. Then we stripped both end so

the wire and taped them on both ends of the batteries to complete the circuit.

Data and Results

The only data we have is from testing our first electromagnet. We made with a Vernier

magnetic field sensor. After we were done we recorded the number of turns, the length and

diameter of the rod, and the current through the wire. We then connected the electromagnet to

two AA batteries, placed it on a table, and measured the strength of the field produced at various

distances away from the magnet.

Table 1. This is a table outlining the data collected from our first electromagnet.

Future Goals

Within the next two weeks we plan to test different types of wires and different battery

voltage to see if we can get stronger magnetic fields. We will decide one a preliminary

benchmark level which we would like to reach for our first official electromagnet. We will then

attempt to reach that EMF value during our two-week period. We may make slight adjustment to

our website to improve navigation but nothing major.
