Title of the Article: Culturally Responsive Classroom Management

Author: Aaron Ross Dahlgren
Year: 2015
Through observations, artifacts, and interviews with the teacher and students involved,
Aaron Ross Dahlgren provides data on how to create caring and successful classroom
management in a culturally diverse classroom. The author highlights that proper classroom
management is vital to academic performance, especially to the education of students of color
and students of low socioeconomic status. It was found that classroom management works best
when established within the first few weeks of school and consists many qualities such as
consistency, communication style, respect, trust, authenticity, building teamwork, and bonding.
The author notes that as a teacher, it is important to be knowledgeable about the students culture
and reflect on their own culture as well. Culturally responsive classroom management is
challenging to implement because of its complexity, but the author concludes that the benefits
are many.

Name of Article: Secrets for ELL Success: Four effective techniques for engaging English
language learners
Author: Gonzales, Valentina
Journal: School Library Journal (New York, N.Y.)
Year: 2017
During her 20-plus years of teaching, the author has identified strategies that can
successfully aid English language learners (ELLs) of different ages and levels in their learning.
Because ELL students are being introduced to a new language and new content, the author
suggests it is important to make teaching comprehensible. This includes making more gestures
than usual, repetition, and paraphrasing. It is also important to take the time to model
assignments in order for students to understand what it is they need to accomplish. Visuals can
greatly help, not only ELLs, but all students to understand concepts. Finally, the author suggests
arranging an inclusive environment that promotes group work and discussion to promote
interaction between ELLs and others.
