PAPER 1 Observational Study

May be opened and given to candidates upon receipt.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
Write your name, Centre number, candidate number and question number clearly on the top right-
hand corner of the front of each sheet of paper.
Choose one of the subjects overleaf. In some cases, candidates may not be able to represent some of
the subjects listed from first-hand observation during the examination itself, in particular landscapes or
townscapes. In these cases, it is permissible to produce supporting studies from first-hand observation
and to produce the final examination piece using the supporting studies as a reference point.
In addition to the examination piece, up to three sheets of supporting work should be submitted.
These should be the sheets of preparatory work undertaken after receipt of this paper.
All sheets must be correctly labelled and securely fastened at the top left-hand corner.

You should make a study or studies from direct observation from one of the following. You may consult
the Art Teacher if you wish. Your studies may be of either the whole or part of the subject. Small
specimens or details may be enlarged.

1 Still Life Group

Either (a) Arrange a group as though an ornament or piece of glassware has just arrived and
been unpacked. The box together with inner and outer wrappings and string will all
form part of the still life composition.

Or (b) Make up a still life group with some of the following items as your starting point.
Mushrooms or other fungi, stems with flowers, a glass vase or bottle, a small basket,
shells, a patterned cloth. Your painting or drawing must be completed with a suitable
background.

2 Natural and Man-made Forms

Either (a) A stem of bougainvillea or another flowering shrub propped up on a brick or laying
on a tile.

Or (b) Protective headgear and goggles.

Or (c) A fish or crab on a plate

3 The Human Form

Either (a) A person sits at a low table as though studying an antique or other object of interest
which is held in one hand. The other hand holds a pencil over a note pad. The whole
figure should be drawn or painted.

Or (b) Two people sit together as though discussing an antique or other object of interest
which is on the table in front of them.

Or (c) A model is posed, seated in an armchair, with one hand which is holding a hand
mirror resting on the arm of the chair. The other hand rests in the lap and the head
is looking down into the mirror. The upper part of the body which includes the head,
shoulders and hands will be the subject for a portrait.

4 Landscape or Townscape

Either (a) A back yard.

Or (b) Monuments in a town square, graveyard, cemetery or place of worship.

Or (c) Trees and other foliage reflected in a river, stream or lake.
