DP SET UP PROCEDURE FOR JM EHSAN

Inform Engine Room that vessel will be working on DP

Ensure engines are on fixed RPM and all thrusters are on and operational in all directions.
Check rudders and steering motor.

NOW ON DP OS1 & OS2 SET/ CHECK UP PAGES AS FOLLOWS

Check UTM Zone by using reference system setting.

Location UTM must be N/E (if unsure select nearest UTM tab) Datum WGS 84.
Check and select your Control Gains. Outside safety zone you can start with Low/
medium gains and gradually go up to High gains once you enter the safety zone. Keep
Kalman filter on zero.
Check all your Units in the Unit tab Vessel speed knots, Wind speed knots, Power
KW, Force knots, Position DMS, ROT - / min.
Check Alarm settings Positions Warning / Alarm 3m/5m.Heading Warning/Alarm 3/5
Motion Page / Zoom in as required.
Use the correct Orientation (RELATIVE can be handy when using joystick)
Reference system page / Repeatability tab.
Open the Change position and Change heading page and position them conveniently on
the Refs Sys page.
Check your change heading page and position them / Velocity tab ( 0.2-3 knots works for
IDS Darul Ehsan in close proximity to platforms and max 0.5 knots when vessel is
outside location)
Check C.O.R from Control Set up Page. Should be at Ship centre (Midship-Zero) unless
otherwise decided.

NOTE THESE SETTINGS ARE ONLY GUIDELINES AND WILL HAVE TO BE

DECIDED BY THE DPO AND MASTER TAKING ACCOUNT THE
WEATHER/CURRENT CONDITIONS AND ENGINE/THRUSTER STATUS.

CHANGE OVER FROM MANUAL TO DP

o Double press TAKE and Standby on the required Work Station

o On pressing this tab it will turn fixed green indicating that the Work station is now
in command. The Control Here LED which was initially flashing green will now
turn fixed green.
o Select all Thrusters by ticking the ENABLE button on thruster page or PRESS
one by one.
o Double press Joystick button.
o Select all available PRS (DGPS 1, 2 & Fanbeam )
o Set up to your working heading using the turning control post.

MASTER AND DPO DECICE ON THE BEST WORKING HEADING/GAIN

CONTROLS KEEPING IN MIND WEATHER/TIDE CONDITIONS AND
ENGINE/THRUSTER STATUS.
o Reduce/counter your swing with the turning pot as you approach your working head. When
your R.O.T is almost zero press AUTO YAW. Vessel will get into Auto heading mode quietly
without loading up the thrusters.
o Maneuver the vessel using Joystick with Surge and Sway. If already in Position, Press either
Surge or Auto Sway.
o Now bring the vessel to a stop by using the joystick to oppose the orange velocity vector.
( Easily done if you are in Relative orientation)
o (SPEED LESS THAN 0.5 Knots)
o When the Velocity vector is less than 0.5 knots Press Auto Position. Vessel will get into DP
Mode quietly without loading up the thruster. Otherwise Press repeatedly the Present Position.
o Hold the ship in DP for about 30 minutes to build up a good model. Avoid thrusting laterally as
soon as you set up in DP. Give the DP time to learn and build a good modal. A good modal can
save you from disaster. Do this minimum 100 meters away from Structure
o Fill up your DP Checklist.
o Test the Modal by deselecting your PRS. Observe and log the position degradation over time.
Dont try this near the platform.
o Have your change heading and change position pages in INCREMENT once near the platform.
o Observe / monitor your Reference System page constantly to monitor Status and Weight of
each PRS
o On the Thruster Feed back page observe the Demand from DP and feed back from the thruster
(10% tolerance)
Basically all we need to see here is green dials and gauges which will indicate that the thruster
are feeding back the demanded thrust.
o On you Demand page keep watching the demands on the thruster make sure none of the
thruster yellow line or red line

0% - 60%
61% - 80%
81% - 100%

NOTE :-
YELLOW OR REED LINING OF THRUSTER IS NOT WHAT WE WANT TO SEE. THIS CAN BE
AVOIDED IN MOST CASES BY PROPER SETUP OF THE SHIP HEAD.

REMEMBER DP SYSTEMS HAVE A PREFERENCE OF HEADING OVER POSITION. THUS LOSS OF

HEADING WILL DEFINITELY RESULT IN LOSS OF POSITION.

COMPARE YOUR HEADING SETPOINT AND CURRENT HEADING.

CONTINOUSLY MONITOR YOUR RADICAL ERROR ( SHOULD BE AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE TO

ZERO)

KEEP LOOKING OUT FOR CHANGES IN WEATHER.

NEVER THRUST THE DP TOTALLY. ALWAYS HAVE A BACK UP PLAN AND ESCAPE ROUTE
READY.

DP CAN BE LONG BORING HOURS NEVER BE FOOL INTO BEING COMPLACENT. DP CAN
THROW A FAULT AT ANY TIME. BE QUICK AND POSITIVE WITH YOUR ACTION.

NEVER ACCEPT ANY ALARMS READ WHAT WILL BE OUR CORRECTIVE ACTION.
KNOW / UNDERSTAND THE SWITCHBOARD AND E/R SETUP.
