Curriculum Topics
Term: Autumn 2017
English: We will be reading extracts from a
range of novels set in the Victorian era such
as Toms Midnight Garden, The Secret
Garden, The Water Babies, Oliver Twist
and Black Beauty. Grammar will focus on
proper nouns, comparative and superlative
adjectives, conjunctions, plurals,
contractions, prepositions and adverbs of
time and place. Spellings will be set weekly
and linked to patterns and letter strings
studied in class. We will learn to use
brackets, speech, question and exclamation
marks in a range of creative writing.

Religious Education:
We will learn about being part of a
school, home, parish and local community.
We will explore the ways in which the
church cares for the community. We shall
also be learning about the teachings of
Jesus in relation to other people and to
God. After half term we shall be looking
at the cycle of Christian festivals.
Information Technology:
Hwb+ - using our Hwb+ to share ideas
and record work. To research
information, create a class page and
blogs. Email using our Hwb+ address
and also use the Hwb+ calendar.
Year/ Blwyddyn: 4 Mrs Bickley
Mathematics: We will learn to read
and write numbers to 10 000. We will
explore calculation and computation
skills, knowledge and use of number
facts, handling data. We will look at
addition and subtraction and
multiplication and division as inverse
operations. After half term, we will be
studying 2D and 3D shapes. We will
also learn how to classify polygons and
recognise types of triangle.
Science: We will be studying the
human body. In particular, we will be
finding out about the skeleton, the
major organs and how our bodies work.
After half term we will be learning
about the importance of healthy food
and exercise.
Welsh:
Autumn 1 Yr Ysgol (learning about

daily routines of the school day
Autumn 2 Y Tywydd (The Weather)
Learning an extensive vocabulary of
the weather and useful phrases to
describe it.
 History: The Victorians.
We shall be covering a range of areas,
including the life of Victoria, the
British Empire and a local history
focus linked to Victorian times.
The topic will continue in the summer
term, when we will look at the lifestyle
lives of the Victorians.
Art:
The children will be investigating the
ways that colour is used to enhance
the environment. We will also be
looking at Victorian silhouettes and will
be creating designs inspired by
Victorian willow pattern china.

Music: We will be investigating

Geography: We have no set
traditional Victorian street and market
Geography topic planned this term,

Ways you can help: Continue to learn and practice times tables 2,3,4,5, and 6s. Help with
homework especially if a paired activity is set. Try to encourage reading aloud as often as
possible. Encourage your children to use Welsh at home.

Well Being:
We will be incorporating several activities to promote well being as a class including
taking increasing responsibility for keeping their mind and body healthy, feeling
positive about ourselves and being sensitive to the feelings of others. We will be
encouraged to gain more understanding of the range of our own feelings and those
of others. We will be encouraged to develop respect for our world, others and
ourselves and to value families and friends as a source of mutual support.
