What are Surges? Outside Sources

Surges or transients are brief over-voltage spikes or
disturbances on a power waveform that can damage,
degrade, or destroy electronic equipment within
any commercial building, institutional buildings,
communication equipment or industrial facilities.
Transients can reach amplitudes of tens of thousands Surge Protection Devices (SPDs) are

Every piece of electrical equipment is designed to
operate at a specified nominal voltage such as 120v
ac, 240v ac, 480v ac, and so on. Most equipment is
designed to handle minor variations in their standard design and performance. Products have been
nominal operating voltage, however, surges can be
very damaging to nearly all equipment.
Sources of Surges
The common source for surges generated inside
a building are devices that switch power on and
off. This can be anything from a simple thermostat
switch operating a heating element to a switch-
mode power supply found on many devices.
