Penultimate

ULTIMATE GOAL WITHIN

WAHINE’S REACH
Penultimate means second-to-last;
as in this is the penultimate page of the
magazine and the University of Hawaii
volleyball team made it to the penulti-
mate match of the NCAA tournament
last year.
Senior setter Dani Mafua told me
the goal for the Wahine this year is to
make it to the ultimate match, the fi-
DAVE nal one, the one for the champi-
Reardon onship. “It’s a logical progression,”
Further Review she said. “We were one of the last
eight teams in 2008 and the final four
last year.”
The part that goes without being
said is that the real goal is to win it all. That’s what we’ve all come to
expect from a program always near the top of the rankings. Coach
Dave Shoji and his Wahine have been there for decades and they’ve
produced four national championships.
As usual, there is reason for high hopes; in addition to third-year
starter Mafua, the Wahine return All-America hitter Kanani Danielson
and two more solid starters in blocker Brittany Hewitt and libero Eliza-
beth Ka‘aihue.
A refreshed-looking Shoji and his staff have spent the past month de-
ciding which of the other talented players are ready as fifth-ranked UH
gears up for another tough preconference schedule.

THREE YEARS ago, the Wahine wore T-shirts imprinted with “Champi-
ons in Training.” This didn’t sit well with a certain element of fans, and
I’ve always wondered why. In other sports, no one would give it a sec-
ond thought; in volleyball, such gestures can be viewed as arrogant.
I asked Shoji about volleyball culture. Although it is intensely compet-
itive at the level UH plays, the former high school baseball, basketball
and football standout said he agrees volleyball players and teams tend
to respect each other more than participants do in other sports.
“Those of us in the game a long time come from it being a cult
sport,” Shoji said. “When I started, it was a small community that
stuck together.
“People love the game more than they love winning. It’s be-
come more competitive as it has grown nationally, but there’s still
somewhat of a closeness.”
That’s why you won’t hear brash proclamations from the
Wahine about winning it all — although that is the goal. It’s a real-
istic one that can go unsaid.
The stated objective is to win that penultimate match, to go
one step farther than last year and into the final. Make it there,
and in their hearts if not from their lips they’ll shout it: “We ain’t
stopping here.”
