Oruro es una ciudad histrica y legendaria en

cuyos sombros socavones y suntuosos museos
se refleja el esplendor socioeconmico, produc-
to de la explotacin minera y el desarrollo co-
mercial de dcadas pasadas que promovieron
su crecimiento y desarrollo. Muestra tambin su
elegante arquitectura virreinal su riqueza pai-
sajstica y natural.

Tambin ostenta su majestuoso Carnaval, la ma-

yor expresin del folclore y cultura boliviana que
mgica fusin pagano - religiosa hacen del Car-
naval un singular atractivo que anualmente ge-
nera la visita de turistas nacionales y extranjeros.

La riqueza mitolgica, etnogrfica, religiosa, his-

trica, natural y cultural convierte a Oruro en un
potencial destino turstico que invita a conocer
algo de su historia a travs del tiempo.

Official name: Plurinational State of Bolivia
Geographical location: Bolivia is located right in the heart of South
America. It lies between longitudes 5726 and 6938 W, and latitudes
938 and 2253 S.
Borders: Bolivia is bound on the north and east by Brazil, on the
southeast by Paraguay, on the south by Argentina, on the west by
Peru and the southwest by Chile.

city of Oruro

The Department of Oruro is situated to west of Bolivia, in the
central highlands of the Andean mountains. Its topography has
irregular relief, characterized by mountains and hills; the climate
is frigid, all around the year. It has a lot archaeological and
historical Centers, hot springs and colonial churches of cultural
and heritage value. Its history is reflected by the ethnic diversity
and by the cultural and natural richness. Oruro was the cradle of
the oldest civilizations of America such as the Urus, Aymaras and
Quechuas so it is an historic and legendary Department of great
tourism potential.
During the colonial period, due to the intense mining activity,
Oruro became one of the most important economic centers of
the Audiencia of Charcas, giving Bolivia and the world
an enormous richness which was extracted from its extraordinary
mountains. It also has flora and fauna resources.
Brief History
The vast highlands of Oruros current territory were a huge
lagoon during the prehistory period, and nowadays it presents a
desolate and arid landscape.

El Departamento de Oruro se sita al Oeste de Bolivia, en el
altiplano central de la cordillera de los Andes. Su topografa
presenta relieve irregular, caracterizado por montanas y
serranas; su clima es frgido, durante gran parte del ao.
Cuenta con importantes centros arqueolgicos e histricos,
aguas termales e iglesias coloniales de valor cultural y
patrimonial. La historia refleja su riqueza tnica, cultural y
natural pues Oruro fue cuna de las civilizaciones ms antiguas
de Amrica como la de los Urus, Aymaras y quechuas por lo
que se constituye en un Departamento histrico y legendario
de gran potencial turstico.
Durante la poca colonial, producto de la intensa actividad
minera, fue uno de los ncleos ms importantes econmicos de
la Audiencia de Charcas, dndole a Bolivia y al mundo enorme
riqueza que fue extrada de sus extraordinarias montaas.
Tambin guarda recursos de flora y fauna.
Breve historia
La inmensa altiplanicie del actual territorio orureo fue una
enorme laguna, durante los tiempos de la prehistoria, y en la
actualidad presenta un panorama rido y desolador.
Oruro se caracteriza por su esencia minera y a pesar del
agotamiento paulatino de sus reservas mineralgicas, en su
vasta geografa altoandina, an persiste la actividad. En la poca

Oruro is characterized by its mining essence and despite

Foundation
The city was founded on November 1st 1606 by Don Manuel
Castro y Padilla, Judge of the Audiencia of Charcas. At that time,
it was named Real Villa de San Felipe de Austria. In 1585 the
priest Francisco de Medrano changed the name to San Miguel
de Oruro. It took place on an ancient settlement called Uru Uru
Revolutionary feats
The First plot against the colonial order was established in July
1739, through the Manifesto of Torts, by Juan Velez de Cordova.
The Revolution of February 10th 1781, was led by Don Sebastian
Pagador and other notable heroes
The Revolution of October 6th 1810, was led by Tomas Barron.
This was the basis for National Independence.
Creation
Oruro was created by Supreme Decree of September 5th 1826
during the presidency of Mariscal Antonio Jose de Sucre.

CIUDAD DE ORURO
Oruro, ciudad histrica y legendaria ofrece a los visitantes locales y nacionales
atractivos museos, sitios histricos, religiosos y mitolgicos y diversos espacios
para la recreacin.

La ciudad de Oruro es la capital de la provincia Cercado, se sita en la parte

nororiental del Departamento y cuenta con una extensin territorial de 5.009
kilmetros cuadrados y tiene gran variedad de recursos naturales, culturales y
tursticos.

Gracias a la majestuosidad de su Carnaval, la ciudad es reconocida como la

Capital del Folklore de Bolivia. El ao 2001, la UNESCO declar al Carnaval de
Oruro como Obra Maestra del Patrimonio Oral e Intangible de la Humanidad.

Oruro, historic and legendary city offers to local and national visitors, attractive
museums, historic places, and various religious and mythological spaces for
recreation.

Oruro is the capital of Cercado province and it is located in the northeast of the
Department. It has an area of 5,009 km2 and offers a variety of natural resources,
culture and tourism.

Thanks to the magnificence of the Carnival, the city is known as folkloric capital of
Bolivia. In 2001, UNESCO declared the Carnival of Oruro as Masterpiece of Oral
and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

It is a French-style building. It was built by French architects
between 1900 and 1913 and it belonged to the tin barons
and the mining magnate Simon I Patio. It was inhabited by
his family until 1912. Its rooms have sculptures, a colonial and
contemporary art gallery.

Fue donada a la Universidad Tcnica de Oruro (UTO) y
actualmente se constituye en museo histrico. Es denominada
Casa de la Cultura.

Mining Ethnographic Museum
The museum is in the interior of a mine
entrance, inside there is a small vault
which according to some stories, it was
the hiding place of the mythological
character Chiru Chiru (thief devoted to
the Virgin) who robbed the rich to give to

 Museo San Miguel de la Rancheria
San Miguel de la Rancheria Church (Museum)
San Miguel de la Rancheria church was built at the end of the
sixteenth century. Inside, there is an altarpiece and a pulpit
from mestizo style. There, the first group of precursors for the
Foundation of the Villa de San Felipe de Austria was formed on
November 1st 1606.
The church preserves sacred sculptures and paintings of
invaluable cultural religious and historical value, for the colonial
period.
Cardozo-Velasquez museum
A family house
It is an artistic and cultural center with paintings
exhibitions, in various techniques. It also shows
the newest works in scrap metal and stone. The
studio is owned by a family of artistic traditions,
conformed by sculptors, photographers, teachers,
musicians and painters.
CATCARVE Cultural Centre carries out a work
of extension art, reaching the most remote
places with the need to share itinerant art with
children in neighborhoods, mining towns, rural
communities, prisons, nursing homes in the
country, through various programs.

Museo Iglesia de San Miguel de la Ranchera
La iglesia de San Miguel de la Ranchera de Oruro fue construida
a fines del siglo XVI, contiene un retablo y pulpito mestizo, lugar
de donde sali el primer squito para la Fundacin de la Villa de
San Felipe de Austria, el 1 de noviembre de 1606.
La Iglesia conserva esculturas y pinturas sacras de incalculable valor
histrico, cultural y religioso correspondiente al perodo colonial.
Museo Casa Taller Cardozo-Velsquez
Centro artstico y cultural, con
muestras de pintura, en diversas
tcnicas. Tambin muestra novedosos
trabajos en chatarra y piedra.
El taller es de propiedad de una familia
de tradicin artstica: escultores,
fotgrafos, maestros, msicos y
pintores.
El Centro cultural CATCARVE realiza
una labor artstica de extensin
llegando a lugares alejados con la
necesidad de compartir arte itinerante
con nios en los barrios, centros mineros, comunidades
rurales, centros penitenciarios, hogares y asilos del pas a
travs de diferentes programas.

Sister Nazaria Ignacia Museum
The front door is carved in stone. It is a notable example of
baroque- mestizo art from the colonial period. It is considered to
be a pilgrimage center in devotion to its founder, Sister
Nazaria Ignacia. She was beatified in 1993.
It has a convent called Casas de las Misiones y Pontificias Madre
Nazaria Ignacia , where it is found a small museum with the
founders belongings. It is situated in Soria Galvarro Street between
Sucre and Murguia Streets
Sacred Heart
It is an attractive viewpoint which is situated at the top of Cerrato
hill, to the west of the city. On the place it stands a large statue of
Jesus Christ, It is frequented by Catholic parishioners who faithfully
ask favors to the Supreme Creator.

It is a viewpoint, where the National Monument Cochupata
Lighthouse stands. It is the place where the current Bolivian
flag was raised for the first time, November 7th 1851, during the
government of Manuel Isidoro Belzu. It is the symbol of Bolivias
Mediterranean because it exhibits a lighthouse where there is no
sea. Formerly it was known as Corralpata and during the colony it
was a kind of fort between Spanish and indigenous villages.

Atractivo mirador de la ciudad, ubicado en la cima del cerro
Cerrato, zona oeste de la ciudad. En el lugar se erige una gran
estatua de Jesucristo; el lugar es muy frecuentado por feligreses
catlicos que con fe piden favores al Supremo Creador.
Faro de Conchupata
Mirador donde se erige el monumento Nacional Faro de
Cochupata, donde se iz por primera vez la actual bandera
boliviana, el 7 de noviembre de 1851, durante el gobierno
de Manuel Isidoro Belzu. Es el smbolo de la mediterraneidad
boliviana porque exhibe un faro donde no hay mar.
Antiguamente fue denominada como Corralpata y durante la
colonia se constituy en una especie de fortn entre las villas
espaolas e indgenas.

The Mayor square or Plaza de Armas is located in the historic,

It is a Recreational Area which also receives the nominative
Conventual Square. Its name comes from the founder of the
Villa de San Felipe de Austria Mr. Manuel Castro Padilla., today

Obrajes Tourist resort
It is located to 18 kilometers from the city, there is a thermal
swimming pool, and family individuals pools too which allow
therapy sessions with the healing waters. It is located at the
beginning of the route to Cochabamba; it has a hostel with
all facilities and services. The water is rich in minerals such as
sulfur, potassium, magnesium and iron which have healing and
therapeutic powers.
Spa Capachos
The hot springs is located to 10 miles to the east of the city. Due
to of its proximity to Oruro it becomes one of the most visited
resorts. The thermal waters flow from the same stream that
flows into Obrajes. The spa offers relaxation due to the kindness
of water, whose qualities are curative for diseases of arthritis,
rheumatism and others. The spa has a roof to avoid the effects
of solar radiation.

Complejo turstico ubicado a 18 kilmetros de la ciudad,
aproximadamente, cuenta con una piscina de aguas termales,
pozas familiares e individuales que permiten sesiones de terapia
con las aguas curativas. El complejo, ubicado al inicio de la ruta a
Cochabamba, cuenta con un hostal, con todas las comodidades
y servicios. Las aguas, ricas en minerales como azufre, potasio,
magnesio y hierro, tienen facultades curativas y teraputicas.
Balneario de Capachos
Balneario de aguas termales ubicado a 10 kilmetros al este
de la ciudad de Oruro. Debido a su cercana con la ciudad
se convierte en uno de los balnearios ms visitados. Las
aguas termales brotan de la misma corriente que fluye hacia
Obrajes. Ofrece momentos de relajacin debido a la bondad
de las aguas cuyas cualidades son curativas en caso de
enfermedades de artritis, reumatismo y otras. El Balneario es
techado para evitar los efectos de la radiacin solar.
Aguas termales de Poop
La provincia Poop posee fuentes de aguas termales de gran
importancia medicinal, cuenta con infraestructura adecuada.
Posee tambin balnearios con aguas termales en el sector de
Cabrera abasteciendo a las piscinas olmpicas del Gobierno
Municipal de Poop y la Cooperativa Minera Poop. Las
cordilleras Condorquia y Alcal (Poop) son aptas para la
prctica de pasamontaa.

of the Incas, it was a military garrison where military strategies
were planned to submit the surrounding villages and later it

Salar is to 220 miles southwest from Oruro.

protectora de los habitantes de esa regin. En la cima del
volcn que est a 5.430 m.s.n.m. se realizan diferentes rituales
andinos de peticin o agradecimiento. Es uno de los atractivos
ms importantes del occidente orureo y est situado en la
ruta internacional Oruro Chile.
Salar de Coipasa
Su nombre deriva de la voz aymara Qollpa que significa sal. El
municipio ubicado en la provincia Coipasa tiene casi el 80 por
ciento de su territorio rodeado por el salar del mismo nombre.
Tiene un impresionante paisaje natural y flora cactcea. El
Salar de Coipasa est a 220 kilmetros hacia el sudoeste de la
ciudad de Oruro.

 Crater de Jayu Quta
Poopo Lake RAMSAR site
The Poop Lake is located in Poop province, it is called the
navel of the world and it constitutes the second largest lake in
Bolivia, with an area of 4,250 km2 at an altitude of 3,686 meters
on the sea level. It has a wonderful landscape in which Andean
flamingos, wild ducks and other species protrude. It was declared
a RAMSAR site due to the quality of the habitat for the Andean
species flora and fauna. The Urus Muratos who are an ethnic
group of ancestral origin live on its banks.
Poop trings
The Poop province has hot springs of great medicinal
importance, it has an adequate infrastructure. It also has hot
springs resorts in the area of Cabrerias and it caters the Olympic
swimming pools of the Municipal Government and the mining
cooperative Poop.
Jayu Quta Crater
Jayu Quta volcano is located to 220 kilometers, it is also called
Maracanacito crater because, according to locals, it is the trace of
a meteorite that had fallen to the ground for centuries.
Volcano Thunupa
It is a sacred mountain revered by pre-Columbian Inca primitive
cultures andit is also venerated today. Thunupa is a volcano located
to the south of Oruro department, whose height reaches 5,432
meters above sea level, bordered by the Salar de Uyuni (Potos).

Lago Poop
El Lago Poop, sitio RAMSAR
El Lago Poop, en la provincia del mismo nombre, es
denominado el ombligo del mundo y se constituye en el
segundo lago de Bolivia, cuya superficie es de 4.250 kilmetros
cuadrados y su altitud de 3.686 m.s.n.m. Presenta un paisaje
maravilloso en el que sobresalen flamencos andinos, patos
silvestres y otras especies. Fue declarado sitio RAMSAR por la
calidad de su hbitat para las especies andinas de flora y fauna.
En sus orillas habitan los Urus Muratos, etnia de origen ancestral.
Crter de Jayu Quta
El volcn de Jayu Quta est ubicado a 220 kilmetros, llamado
tambin crter de Maracanacito porque, segn los habitantes de
la zona, es la huella de un meteorito que habra cado a la tierra
hace siglos.
Volcn de Thunupa
Es una montaa sagrada y venerada por culturas primitivas
precolombinas, incaicas y tambin actuales. Thunupa es un

Its name corresponds to a deity of the Colla village which was
considered the supreme God, creator of nature and the father of
civilization. Volcano thunder and lightnings God. Its surroundings
harbor flamingos, ostriches, foxes and flora that can survive in this
rare and unique ecosystem.
Thunupa Salar
The Thunupa Salar is located in the town of Salinas de Garci Mendoza,
it constitutes the main gateway to the Salar de Uyuni (Potos). It is
the second largest salt lake in Bolivia, and according to geological
studies, its maximum depth is four to five meters, the crust of salt that
it contains is similar to that of Uyuni. It is surrounded by mountains
that have beautiful and imposing cactus. It is called The Mirror of
Heaven. It is an incomparable white platform. It is characterized by
the exploitation and industrialization of salt deposits. It is part of the
Intersalar Tourist Route.
Soledad lagoon
It is located in Eucalyptus, Tomas Barrn Province. Soledad
Lagoon is the habitat for flora and fauna species, typical of the
region. The area is also the natural reserves of Huancaroma
vicua. The creation of the province goes back to the nineteenth
century (1899 - 1910), formerly known as the farm of Quelcata.
Other attractions include the colonial church, the central railway
station and the old environments COMIBOL Caracoles and Patio,
which belong to the mining golden age. Along Ventilla, chullpares
are displayed.

Salar de Thunupa
El Salar de Thunupa, situado en el municipio de Salinas de Garci
Mendoza, se constituye en la principal puerta de ingreso al
Salar de Uyuni (Potos). Es el segundo salar ms importante de
Bolivia, y segn estudios geolgicos, su profundidad mxima
es de cuatro a cinco metros; la costra de sal que contiene es
similar a la de Uyuni. Se encuentra rodeado por serranas que
poseen hermosos e imponentes cactus. Se lo denomina El
Espejo del Cielo. Es una plataforma blanquecina incomparable.
Se caracteriza por la explotacin e industrializacin de los
yacimientos de sal. Forma parte de la Ruta Turstica Intersalar.
Laguna Soledad
Est situada en el municipio de Eucaliptus, provincia Tomas
Barrn. La Laguna Soledad es el hbitat de especies de flora
y fauna tpicas de la regin. La zona es tambin la reserva
natural de vicuas de Huancaroma. La creacin de la provincia
remonta al siglo XIX (1899 - 1910), antes conocida como la
hacienda de Quelcata. Entre otros atractivos tursticos figuran
el templo colonial, la estacin ferroviaria central y los antiguos
ambientes de la COMIBOL Caracoles y Patio, pertenecientes
a la poca dorada de la minera. A lo largo de Ventilla se
exhiben los chullpares.

South America, it is also known
as the Sistine Chapel of the
Highlands. It is located in the
municipality of Curahuara of

was built in 1608 and declared
a national monument by
Act of November 17th 1960. It hosts Santiago de Curahuara de
Carangas, patron of the town. The interior is full of pictorial art with
representations of biblical passages. Such as, The Judgments Day,
where some people are being burnt in hell fire while several others
are resuscitatig.

Colonial church of Paria Templo colonial de Paria

It is located in Soracachi municipality, whose capital is Paria.
Historically, it was the first town founded by Spanish people during
the colonial period that generated considerable socioeconomic
movements, for the time. Sample of this splendor, in the main
square it stands a colonial church built in the seventeenth century.
It has baroque-mestizo architecture. Another historical church is
Sepulturas which was built in 1765 at the Real Audiencia de Charcas.
Se encuentra en el municipio de Soracachi, cuya capital es
Paria. Histricamente, fue la primera poblacin fundada por
los espaoles durante la poca colonial donde se gener
considerable movimiento socioeconmico, para la poca. Muestra
de ese esplendor, en su plaza principal se erige un templo colonial
construido en el siglo XVII. Posee una arquitectura barroco-mestiza.
Otro de los histricos templos es el de Sepulturas construido el ao
1.765 en la Real Audiencia de Charcas.

Colonial church of Quillacas Sanctuary
The Quillacas church has a colonial styke that revalues the religion
around the image of Quillacas Lord. It was built in the seventeenth
century; its central dome has beautiful arches. It promotes influx
of worshipers and visitors who annually visit the area. In its
surroundings, the archaeological remains of Tambo Viejo are found,
as evidence of the establishment of ancient cultures. There are also
chullpares where traditional practices are performed. In Quillacas
you can see a small regional archaeological museum, which exhibits
pre-Columbian pieces of the cultures found in the area
Salinas de Garci Mendoza Colonial Temple
It is located in Salinas de Garci Mendoza Town. Dating back to the
sixteenth century, around which you can observe the chullpares la
Khasa, Auqui Kollu y Puqui which shows the presence of ancient
civilizations prior to the colony.
Salinas also has other natural attractions such as mineral water
springs, the remains of miners mills or smelters in the colonial
booming industry. A short walk from the village, it is found the
Lakajahuira River where geysers highlight.

El templo del Santuario de Quillacas es un atractivo colonial
que revaloriza la religiosidad en torno a la imagen del
Seor de Quillacas. Fue construido en el siglo XVII, en cuya
cpula central se observan hermosos arcos de medio
punto. Promueve gran afluencia de feligreses y visitantes
que anualmente se trasladan a la zona. En sus alrededores,
como constancia del establecimiento de culturas antiguas,
se encuentran restos arqueolgicos del Tambo Viejo que era
el paso obligado. Asimismo, existen chullpares donde se
realizan prcticas ancestrales. En Quillacas se puede observar
un pequeo museo regional arqueolgico, que exhibe piezas
precolombinas de las culturas asentadas en la zona.
Templo Colonial de Salinas de Garci Mendoza
Situado en el municipio de Salinas de Garci Mendoza. Su
construccin se remonta al siglo XVI, en cuyos alrededores se
observan chullpares de la Khasa, Auqui Kollu y Puqui que muestran
la presencia de civilizaciones antiguas anteriores a la colonia.
Salinas tambin cuenta con otros atractivos naturales como las
vertientes de agua mineral, los restos de ingenios mineros o
fundidoras de la floreciente industria colonial. A pocos pasos del
pueblo, se encuentra el rio Lakajahuira donde resaltan los geiseres.

colossal architecture. The Corque majestic colonial Church is located
in the town of the same name; it invites you to discover the history of
the process of evangelization in colonial times, through the presence
of the Catholic religion in that territory. The area also shows traces
of Chullpares of Tarucachi where you can appreciate the agro-
technology of ancient civilizations that inhabited this region.
Copacabana Colonial Church
The Copacabana colonial church is located in Beln de Andamarca
town South Carangas Province, it displays its colossal architecture
whose spectacular cover, composed of numerous domes, gives a
touch of elegance and distinction. It is the silent witness of Spanish
rule in colonial times. Orinoca and Santiago Andamarca are other
colonial churches; the Santiago tower is affirmed and the highest in
the highlands of Oruro.
In the ancient town of Beln de Andamarca, at the foot of the hill Willi
Willi, it is found the extinct volcano Orkocarayas, the mineral water
spring Icharaque and the colonial church of the village. Among other
attractions chullapares are included. South Carangas also has vast
areas of sand that are the habitat of the characteristic species of the
Department, such as the quirquincho.

colonia, a travs de la presencia de la religin catlica en ese
territorio. La zona tambin muestra vestigios de Chullpares
de Tarucachi donde se puede apreciar la agrotecnologa de
civilizaciones antiguas que habitaban en esa regin.

La Iglesia colonial de Copacabana, en el municipio de
Andamarca, provincia Sur Carangas, exhibe su colosal
arquitectura cuya espectacular cubierta, compuesta por
numerosas cpulas, le da un toque de elegancia y distincin.
Silencioso testigo de la dominacin espaola en tiempos
de la colonia. Otros templos coloniales son los de Orinoca y
Santiago de Andamarca cuya torre, se afirma, es la ms alta
del altiplano orureo.
En la antigua poblacin de Beln de Andamarca, a los pies del
cerro Willi Willi, se encuentra el volcn apagado de Orkocarayas,

The San Agustin of Toledo church was built around 1559
during the former Viceroyalty of Peru. Along with the church, a
graveyard, a convent and a hospital were also. Built. There are still
vestiges of the buildings and are preserved by the municipality of
Saucari. With regard to the hospital and convent, only the stone
foundations remain.
Sabaya Church
Sabayas Church was built in the seventeenth century, with a
baroque- mestizo style; the baptistery has the Republican period
murals with scenes depicting the sea and an urban landscape,
you can also see the first paintings of past centuriesl. The temple
is well known as an important sanctuary, which, according
to published data, was built by craftsmen Chipayas. It has a
courtyard, pools, and a free tower; it emphasizes his stone
doorway carved in mestizo baroque style.
Colonial church of El Choro
El Choro has a colonial church called San Pedro de Challacollo,
you can also find chullpares of Chusaqueri, and it was a ranch
which has been part of the Uru Muratos who lived in this area.

estos bienes patrimoniales an estn siendo conservados
por la comunidad de Saucar. Con respecto al hospital y el
convento quedan solamente los cimientos de piedra
Iglesia de Sabaya
La Iglesia de Sabaya fue construida en el siglo XVII, con
caractersticas de silo barroco mestizo; el baptisterio posee
pintura mural del periodo republicano con escenas que
representan el mar y un paisaje urbano, encontrando restos
de las primeras pinturas de siglos pasados. El templo es muy
conocido como un importante Santuario, que, segn datos
publicados, fue edificado por artesanos Chipayas. Tiene un
atrio, pozas y torre exenta; destaca su portada tallada en
piedra de estilo barroco mestizo.
Templo colonial de El Choro
El Choro cuenta con una templo colonial como es el de San
Pedro de Challacollo, tambin se pueden encontrar los
chullpares de Chusaqueri, un rancho que habra sido parte de
los Uru Muratos que habitaban en este sector.

Poopo Church
The church has a mestizo baroque style whose constructive
elements, the floors, the coffered faade, the decoration are related
to the Renaissance architecture and date back to 1560.
San Pedro de Totora Church
The church is located in San Pedro de Totora municipality. It is
characterized by the front side which has a Ionic style, it is considered
very strange in the region because it is the only one that keeps this
style. Today, it presents a deteriorated state.
The two-storey tower is held high and the bell is still heard in special
occasions. The few recovered saints from the old church were placed
in the atrium of another church recently built. Totoras population
was registered in 1830 by the famous French traveler Alcides
DOrbigny who was surprised by the amount of chullpas which once
surrounded the church and which now remains in the area.
Sepulturas Church
The Santa Barbara de Sepulturas colonial church is located to the
east of Oruro, in the community of the same name Teniente Bullan
canton, Cercado province. The church was declared a National
Monument by Supreme Decree 8171, December 1967 for having
become an important historical and religious legacy of the colonial
period.
The church has a nave with a transept, a sacristy and a baptistery,
a gable roof and an adjacent tower. It also was a mill site mining
during the colonial period.

Iglesia de estilo Barroco Mestizo cuyas plantas, fachadas
artesonadas y decoraciones estn relacionadas con la
arquitectura religiosa renacentista que data de 1560.
Iglesia de San Pedro de Totora
La Iglesia ubicada en el municipio de San Pedro de Totora que se
caracteriza por la portada lateral de estilo jnico, muy extrao
en la regin siendo la nica que mantiene ese estilo. En la
actualidad presenta un estado deteriorado.
La torre de dos plantas se mantiene erguida y an se escucha
su campana para ocasiones especiales. Los escasos Santos
recuperados de la antigua Iglesia fueron depositados en otra
iglesia de reciente construccin, en el atrio de la antigua
estructura. La poblacin de Totora fue registrada el ao 1830 por
el famoso viajero francs Alcides DOrbigny a quien sorprendi
la cantidad de chullpas que la rodeaban antiguamente y que en
la actualidad permanecen en la zona.
Iglesia de Sepulturas
La iglesia colonial Santa Brbara de Sepulturas est situada
al este de la ciudad de Oruro, La iglesia fue declarada
Monumento Nacional mediante Decreto Supermo 8171, de
diciembre de 1967 por constituirse en un importante legado
histrico y religioso de la poca colonial.
La iglesia consta de una sola nave con crucero, sacrista y
bautisterio; cubierta a dos aguas y torre adosada. Tiene dos
portadas mestizas, una de ellas fachadas en 1785.

 Iglesia San Juan Bautista en Challapata
Yarvicoya Church
Yarvicoya Church is another remarkable example of baroque-
mestizo art. It is located in Caracollo jurisdiction, Cercado Province, to
the east of the highway to La Paz. It belongs to the sixteenth century,
with samples from recent remodeling, and it has an altarpiece
painted with gold leaf, where figures of snakes mimic themselves.
The church was declared a national monument and consists of
a nave with a triumphal arch, a headpiece, and a choir, attached
tower and fully carved stone front. At the site, there are remains of
mining from colonial times.
San Juan Bautista Colonial church
San Juan Bautista church is located in the old town of Challapata,
Avaroa province. It has Baroque - mestizo style and preserves its
architectural features, its perimeter wall and its imposing tower.
There is also an observation deck located on the Calvary of Redeemer
Christ and Apachetas of Suchuna and Huajriri. In the surroundings
impressive chullpares are observed.

La Iglesia de Yarvicoya es otro ejemplo notable del arte barroco
mestizo de Oruro. Est ubicada en la jurisdiccin de Caracollo,
Provincia Cercado, al este de la carretera a La Paz. Data del
siglo XVI, con muestras de refaccin reciente y cuenta con un
retablo pintado con pan de oro, donde se mimetizan figuras
de serpientes. La iglesia fue declarada monumento nacional
y consta de una nave nica con arco triunfal, testera, pleno y
coro, torre anexa y portada tallada ntegramente de piedra. En
el lugar existen restos de explotacin minera de la poca colonial

El templo colonial San Juan Bautista se encuentra en el pueblo
antiguo del municipio de Challapata, provincia Eduardo Avaroa.
Tiene detalles de barroco mestizo y conserva sus caractersticas
arquitectnicas, su muro perimetral y su imponente torre.
Tambin existe un mirador ubicado en el calvario del Cristo
Redentor; Apachetas de Suchuna y Huajriri. En el entorno se
observan impresionantes chullpares.

They are located in Cala Cala, a region
characterized by the presence of rocks. It
is located at 4,500 on the sea level. The
Pictographic rupestrian samples are
found in rocks called quelcata (written)
where there are figures of camels
predominantly painted in red, black and
white. It is a unique tourist attraction
with these characteristics.
Citadel Alcaya
It is located to 290 kilometers to the south of Oruro (border
Potos) in Ladislao Cabrera province. This enigmatic territory is an
archaeological site (chullpas) or natural ethnographic museum.
It shows stone buildings, utensils, handicrafts and mummified
human remains from a pre-Columbian culture, which it is thought,
it was dominant in the area. Puqui is another archaeological site
that is located to 230 kilometers to the southwest. It is considered
a tourist area.

de una cultura precolombina que, se cree, fue dominante
en la zona. Otro centro arqueolgico es Puqui ubicado a 230
kilmetros, al suroeste. Es considerada como zona turstica.

It is located in San Miguel de Uruquilla town, near Vengal Vinto,
Ladislao Cabrera Province. It is characterized by the ruins of an
ancient town. It was founded and dominated by Spanish colonists
in 1600. They brought about a hundred mitayos to work in the
old mines of copper, gold and others. In the surroundings the
chullpares are observed, whose design is unique and corresponds
to the Inca period.
Yaraque Ruins
It is an Archaeological site located in Yaraque town, San Pedro de
Totora province; there you can find a large number of rupestrian
paintings and a chullpa (stone tomb tower) which corresponds
to the Inca period. This place is known as La Casa del Inca.
Lost City of Katarimarca
It is located in Choquecota municipality, Carangas province.
It is characterized by the presence of chullpares that testify the
ancestral force of Pre-Columbian cultures. It is to 15 miles from
Choquecota.

Ruinas y Chullpares de Uruquilla
Ubicada en la poblacin de San Miguel de Uruquilla, cercana
a Vengal Vinto, provincia Ladislao Cabrera. Se caracteriza por
poseer las ruinas de un pueblo antiguo fundado y dominado
por colonizadores espaoles en el ao 1600 aproximadamente
quienes trajeron a un centenar de mitayos para trabajar en
las antiguas minas de cobre, oro y otros. En sus alrededores
se observan chullpares, cuyo diseo nico corresponde al
periodo incaico.

Sitio arqueolgico situada en la poblacin de Yaraque,
provincia San Pedro de Totora, donde se pueden encontrar
una gran cantidad de pinturas rupestres y un chullpar (torre
funeraria) de piedra que corresponde al periodo inca. Este
lugar es conocido como La Casa del Inca.
Ciudad perdida de Katarimarca
Situada en el municipio de Choquecota, provincia Carangas.
Se caracteriza por la presencia de chullpares que atestiguan la
vigencia ancestral de culturas precolombinas. Se encuentra a
15 kilmetros de Choquecota.

The construction of temples on sacred sites by Andean peoples

The chullpares are painted with stepped motif and the Sajama
church which was built with a Latin cross plan, culminates in a
tower that could have been built on a pre-Hispanic temple (where
people worshiped the majestic snow) both are part of the regions

This immense territory shows the colonial architecture of the
churches in Tomarapi and the pre-Columbian architecture of the
colorful chullpares in Macaya town. These unique buildings in the
world testify to the splendor and creativity of the cultures found in
the area.
Inca Pinta Engravings
Among the richness of the Columbian Poop province, it is found the
rupestrian petroglyphs in the field cabrera of Inca Pinta, located to
the south west of poopo. It also has the Chullpares of Vilaque, colonial
churches of San Jos de la Banda, Venta and Media, and Puaca.

Entre la riqueza precolombina de la provincia de Poop se
encuentran los petrograbados rupestres en el sector cabrera

Millennial Culture Uru Chipaya
Chipaya dwellers are descendants of the oldest inhabitants of the
highlands. The Chipayas are part of the First Nation Uru. Unlike other
groups, they preserve much of their ancestral cultural characteristics.
The ethnic language is Puquina their circular rooms are called
putucus.The white and light blue colors are predominatediIn their
native dress, which is related to their environment.
Its inhabitants dominate the water management technique of
Lauca River, achieving favorable to saline soils for some crops.
It has important natural and cultural attractions, among them the
ancient culture Uru Chipaya.
Ancient Culture Uru Llapallapani
It is a natural habitat of the ancient culture Uru Llapallapani,
where the inhabitants dwell on the shores of Poop Lake in Huari,
Sebastian Pagador province. Its economy is based on fishing and
small agriculture. Nearby, there is pre-Columbian agricultural
terracing which is well preserved as a sign of agricultural splendor
of the central highlands.
Another tourist potential is the colonial church in San Pedro de
Condo, which dates back centuries.
Lagunillas, Lukhumpaya - Phaw and Human Castilla chullpares
show numerous well-preserved and unique natural landscapes.
In Vichajlupe there are hot springs frequented by the locals due

Milenaria Cultura Uru Chipaya
Los habitantes de Chipaya son descendientes de los pobladores
ms antiguos del Altiplano. Los Chipayas forma parte de la
Nacin Originaria Uru. A diferencia de otros grupos, conservan
gran parte de sus rasgos culturales ancestrales; el idioma tnico
que es el Puquina, sus habitaciones circulares son llamadas
putucus. En su vestimenta originaria, que se relaciona con su
entorno, predominan los colores blanco y celeste.
Sus habitantes dominan la tcnica de manejo de aguas del
rio Lauca, logrando hacer propicios los suelos salinos para
algunos cultivos.
Posee importantes atractivos tursticos naturales y culturales
entre los que se destacan la Cultura Milenaria Uru Chipaya.
Cultura milenaria Uru Llapallapani
Es el hbitat natural de la cultura milenaria Uru Llapallapani,
cuyos habitantes moran a orillas del Lago Poop en el
municipio de Huari, provincia Sebastin Pagador. Su economa
se basa en la pesca y escasa agricultura. En los alrededores se
observan terrazas agrcolas precolombinas bien conservadas
como muestra del esplendor agrcola del altiplano central.
Otro potencial turstico es el templo colonial en San Pedro de
Condo, que data de siglos pasados. Lagunillas, Lukhumpaya
Phawa y Castilla Huma muestran numerosos chullpares bien
conservados y singulares paisajes naturales. En Vichajlupe

The Andes Atlantis
It is located to 196 kilometers and to the southwest of the city.
According to researchers at Pedro Santo Villca mountin (3,200
above sea level) there are remains of archaeological sites related
to the theory of Plato and, according to British researcher Jim
Allen the Atlantis was the origin of the world. In the area, there are
underground springs of hot and cold water, irrigation canals that
flow into the lakes edge. The site has been sunk by earthquakes
and, according to Bolivian legend of Desaguadero, it was sunk by
punishment of gods, just as Plato relates.

La Atlntida de los Andes
Est situada a 196 kilmetros al sudoeste de la ciudad. Segn
investigadores, en el cerro Pedro Santos Villca (3.200 m.s.n.m)
existen vestigios de ruinas arqueolgicas relacionadas con la Teora
de Platn y, segn el investigador ingls Jim Allen fue la Atlntida,
el origen del mundo. En la zona, existen manantiales subterrneos
de agua fra y caliente, canales de riego que desembocan en el
borde del lago. El sitio ha sido hundido por terremotos y, segn la
leyenda boliviana del Desaguadero, fue hundida por castigo de los
dioses, exactamente como relata Platn.

 Ingenio Huanuni
Huanuni mining town, capital of tin
It is the largest tin deposit and it is located in Huanuni. The
minerals are characterized by the high grade they have. Huanuni
is known historically as the Capital of the Bolivian tin whose
veins are still in operation as a demonstration of the essence and
Oruro mining tradition.
Its inexhaustible veins of tin, in the historic hill of Phosokoni
continue being worked by the biggest state company in the
country; it operates with more than 5,000 miners, generating
large-scale production.
Railway Museum of Machacamarca
Located in the municipality of the same name where some relics
are found: such as Luzmila, Alcapone locomotives, and others that
show the history of the railway in Bolivia during the Republican
periode. Its infrastructure shows many facets of the introduction of
yesteryear railways. Other railway accessories that are part of the
history of the mining boom of Oruro are also displayed.

Museo Ferroviario
Mina San Jos
Se sita a 1,5 kilmetros del centro de la ciudad. Comenz a
ser explotada hace ms de dos siglos de donde se extrajeron
plata, plomo y estao. Es uno de los ms importantes centros
mineros que se constituye en la muestra del auge de la
actividad minera en Oruro. Su aporte fue importante para la
economa del departamento y el pas.
Mina Itos-La Colorada
Muestra el esplendor de la actividad minera de siglos pasados.
En la mina se encuentra un ingenio relacionado con la pre-
concentracin de complejos estaferos. La mina an es
explotada por cooperativas mineras.
Centro minero Huanuni, capital del estao
Es el mayor yacimiento de estao y est en ubicado en el municipio
de Huanuni, cuyos minerales se caracterizan por la alta Ley que
tienen. Huanuni es reconocido histricamente como la Capital
del estao boliviano cuyas vetas continan en explotacin como
muestra de la esencia y tradicin minera de Oruro.
Sus inagotables vetas de estao, en el histrico cerro de
Phosokoni, continan siendo trabajadas por la mayor
empresa estatal del pas, pues opera con ms de 5.000
mineros, generando produccin a gran escala.
Museo Ferroviario de Machacamarca
Se encuentra en el municipio del mismo nombre donde
se encuentran algunas reliquias: las locomotoras Luzmila,
Alcapone y otras que muestran la historia del ferrocarril en
Bolivia, durante la poca republicana. Su infraestructura
remozada muestra muchas facetas de la introduccin del
ferrocarril de antao. Tambin se exhiben otros accesorios
ferrocarrileros que forman parte de la historia del auge minero
del Departamento.

This dance represents the struggle between good and evil. Michael
Archangel defeats the seven capital sins and the infernal legions,
leading them to the presence of Our Lady of Socavn ( Nuestra
Seora del Socavn) in the Sanctuary.
The story of this struggle is represented on Monday carnival at
the Socavn esplanade. The seven virtues, (story of the devil) are
represented and personified by the Catholic people from Oruro. The
characters are: Lucifer King of Darkness, his substitute Satan, the
Queen or China Supay (female demon). Michael Archangel leads
the dance. The Condor and the Bear are late incorporated.

Representa a la lucha del bien y el mal. El Arcngel Miguel
derrota a los siete pecados capitales y a las legiones infernales,
conducindolos a presencia de Nuestra Seora del Socavn
en su Santuario.
El relato o Auto Sacramental es representado el lunes de
Carnaval en inmediaciones del Santuario del Socavn. Las
siete virtudes, del relato del diablo, estn representadas
y personificadas por el pueblo catlico de Oruro. Tiene
como figuras al Lucifer, Rey de las tinieblas; Satans, su
lugarteniente; la Reyna o China supay (demonio hembra). El
director de danza es el ngel Miguel. Sus agregados son el
Cndor y el Oso.

 Morenos
Morenada
This dance represents to black slaves who stepped on the grapes at
a winery. According to their traditional dramatized songs; wine; the
product of grape stomping, is for the Altar of God first and then for
the cruel Spanish and also to satiate the black slaves thirst.
The dancers mask is similar to a black slaves face, carrying the
soldier conquerors thirst, the Spanish nobleman, and the Castilian
boor.
The mask also has a Castilian conquerors helmet and the wig of a
noble European. The costume consists of a Castilian rural jersey of
the XVI century; a skirtish that has a wine barrel form. The matraca
is a typical instrument of the winery which is used to maintain the
rhythm of the tread grapes.
The characters are: the King Moreno or Achachi (old or grandfather)
that is the combination of the caporal and the white king. This
last one has now disappeared. The black or brown women are
performed by men properly wearing womens costumes. The young
ladies and the cholitas are late incorporated to the dance.

Morenada
Representa a los esclavos negros pisando la uva en un
lagar. Segn sus tradicionales cantos dramatizados, el vino,
producto de la pisa de la uva, en primer lugar, es para el Altar
de Dios y luego, para el cruel espaol y saciar la sed del propio
esclavo negro.
El moreno es la mscara de un negro, cargando al sediento
soldado de la conquista, al noble espaol, al palurdo castellano
y un tonel de vino. Su disfraz es un casco del soldado castellano
de la conquista; la peluca de un noble europeo; la casaca del
rural castellano del siglo XVI; el pollern en forma de un tonel
(de vino). La matraca es propia de los lagares para mantener el
ritmo de la pisa de la uva.
Las figuras son: El Rey Moreno; el Achachi (viejo o abuelo), es
la combinacin del caporal y el rey blanco hoy desaparecido;
la negra o morena (papel propio de varones). Son agregados a
la danza: las damitas o figuras femeninas y las cholitas.

 Tobas
Incas
The Incas, due to their costume, music and dance, have exotic
origins. They have abundant hair, a non-metal crown (paperboard
and cloth), a layer and capellone, a chest, close fitting trousers, all in
black cloth with their corresponding embroidery. The black colour
stands for the mourning of Atawallpas death.
The Incas music is a kind of huayo, it is not too aggressive, it incites
a fight or to be prepared for a battle. The steps are strong, rhythmic,
and these steps differ from the Incas to the ones of Europeans who
form part of the dance too.
The conquerors carry European weapons of the period, especially the
sword. The natives use warakas, only Atawallpa has a scepter called
qori champi.
Tobas
Formerly, it was called Cambitas this derives from the aymara word
kualamb or jualanwa (wild, not civilized). This dance recalls esta danza se rememora el baile de los prisioneros trados
the prisoners dance that was brought from the eastern lowlands
(Chiquitana) during the expansionist Incas war.
In the second half of the nineteenth century the French naturalist
Crevaux, died in the Bolivian Chaco, in the TOBAs hands, so this
name became the equivalent of wild the wildest, impacting on the
change of the dance name.

Incas
Los Incas, por su disfraz, msica y baile, tienen origen extico.
Los Incas tienen cabellera abundante, una corona no metlica
(cartn y tela), una capa y su capelln, una pechera, pantaln
pegado al cuerpo, todo en tela negra con sus respectivos
bordados. El negro de esta vestimenta es el luto por la muerte
de Atawallpa.
La msica de los inkas orureos es un huayo, sin ser muy
agresivo, incita a un combate o para prepararse para una batalla.
Sus pasos son fuertes y rtmicos, diferenciado entre incas y
europeos. Los conquistadores llevan armas europeas de la
poca, principalmente la espada. Los nativos utilizan la warakas,
slo Atawallpa tiene un cetro denominado qori champi.
Tobas
Antiguamente denominado cambitas que deriva de la voz
aymara kualamb o jualanwa(salvaje, no civilizado). Con
de los llanos orientales (Chiquitana), durante la guerra
expansionista de los Incas.
En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX muri en el Chaco boliviano
el naturalista francs Crevaux, en manos de los TOBA, por lo
que este nombre pas a ser el equivalente del salvaje ms

The traditional toba costume in Oruro, consists of a chuku (vertical
feathered headdress), which is called turban. A chaplain and
skirtish made of the same cloth. Ankles and wrists are adorned with

This dance is an imitation of the saya dance from Yungas
performed by the urban mestizo. Its name comes from Tundi
(blackened or faded by solar rays), Tinti is another dialect
pronunciation. It is a dance that has a cheerful rhythm and nice
chants.
The main character is the Kara Moqo (bare calf), the costume
consists of an ayateo clothing but it represents to the northern
villagersfrom La Paz. At harvest time they go in search of work to
Yungas. The Caporal is the leader of such dance.
Zampoeros o zampoaris
They are dancer musicians of provincial urban centres; they play the
misti siku (a seven notes panpipe). The Sikuri (siku performer) is
also played in this group; it is a pentatonic wind instrument.

Los negritos

El tradicional atuendo del toba en Oruro, es el chuku (tocado
con plumas verticales), al que llaman turbante. Un capelln y
plumas. Su arma es una lanza o chunta (madera de palo santo).
Tundiki o negritos
Imitacin por el mestizo urbano a la danza de la saya de los
negros de los Yungas. Su nombre deriva de Tundi (ennegrecido
o desteido por los rayos solares), otra pronunciacin dialectal
es tinti. Es una danza de ritmo y canto.
Su figura es el Kara moqo (pantorrilla pelada), con vestimenta
de ayateo pero, representando a los del norte La Paz que
en temporada de cosecha acuden en busca de trabajo a los
Yungas. Como director de danza esta el Caporal.
Zampoeros o zampoaris
Msicos danzantes de las urbes provincianas, ejecutan el misti
siku (zampoa de siete notas). En esta agrupacin est, tambin
el Sikuri (ejecutante del siku), instrumento de viento pentatnico.

 Llamerada
Cullaguada
Until the middle of the last century, this dance was performed by
single women and single men in marriageable age. A married
person, whether young, who participated in the kullaguada, was
called qencha kullagua so that they used to lose all social prestige.
Young people used to love each other freely out of sight of their
parents; they even used to live together for mutual knowledge
and then marry in the near future. In the coexistence, the man
used to respect women as if she were his kullagua (sister) hence
the name of the dance. The outstanding character is the single
mother or cheated wife. Role played especially by a man wearing
womens clothes, carrying back a doll in an awayu (cloth for
carrying babies and things). The dance leader is the wapuri
(handsome, aymarizada word). The mask has an oversized nose.
It represents the old green. He is a single womens perverter. Next
it is seen the kanti (spinned wool twister). All dancers carry a
phuska (spinning wheel or bone to spin) on their hands.
Llameros
It is a guild of muleteers from immemorial times; they dedicated
themselves to the barter; carrying salt, dried meat, salted fish,
and dehydrated potatoes to the highlands and bringing wood,
fruit and corn back from warm areas too. What distinguished the
traditional llamero from the others was a tricorn shaped hat in
his qhawa (a small piece of cloth like a poncho). The woman is
dressed in cholita and she is characterized by her lordly Montera
and her awayu, a piece of cloth where she carries some food. The

Kullaguada
Hasta mediados del siglo pasado, esta danza era propia de
las solteras y los solteros en edad de contraer matrimonio. A
la persona casada, as sea muy joven, que participaba en la
kullaguada, se la denominaba qencha kullagua con lo que
perda todo prestigio social.
Fuera de la vista de sus padres, los jvenes podan enamorar
libremente, incluso vivir en parejas para un conocimiento
mutuo y en el futuro contraer matrimonio. En esa convivencia
el hombre respetaba a la mujer como si fuese su kullagua
(hermana) de la que proviene el nombre de la danza. Como
figura (sobresaliente) se tiene a la madre soltera o mujer
engaada, papel que hace un varn vestido con prendas
femeninas, cargando a la espalda una mueca en un awayu
(pao para cargar bebes y cosas). El director de danza es el
wapuri (guapo, palabra aymarizada). En su careta destaca
una nariz exageradamente grande. Representa al viejo verde,
pervertidor de solteras, por una parte. Por otra, el kanti
(retorcedor de la lana hilada); todos los danzantes llevan en la
mano su phuska (rueca o hueso para hilar).
Llameros
Gremio de arrieros de tiempos inmemoriales, dedicados al
trueque llevando sal, charque, pescado salado y chuo de la puna
y trayendo maderas, frutas y maz de las zonas clidas. Distingua
al llamero tradicional en su qhawa (pequea prenda similar
al poncho), un sombrero en forma de tricornio. La mujer vesta

boy dressed as llamero, is called chinta and he is responsible to
taking care of goods and livestock.
Caporales (foreman)
They are the massified foremen of the tundikis dance. It
represents the white foreman, mulatto or worn black who used
to exploit the slaves in colonial times. It is a popular dance that
was appropriated by an elite stratum, because of its strong step
and the use of the whip.
Waka waka
It is the cow dance. In fact it is two different dances with the same
tune: one is urban Waka Toqori (bilia cow), inspired by the
bullfight, the dance leader is the bullfighter. The other one is the
waka Tinti (black cow), it represents the rural ritual planting with
a pair of oxen. The peasants are, in one case, kusillu (monkeys),
and in other ones they are ancient authorities. The man leads
the oxen and his wife drops the seed (coca leaves). Milkmaids
are the incorporated dancers in this group. They wear very warm
clothing against the cold winter dawn.
Kallawaya
The correct name is Qolla Wayu(those who take the medicine).
It is a folkloric dance from Chuma, Muecas La Paz province. The
original and traditional costume belongs to a tourist from the late
nineteenth century. The suit consists of a Panama hat (flat), dark

como el llamero, se le llama chinta y es el responsable de
cuidar mercadera y ganado.
Caporales
El caporal de los tundiki masificado. Representa al capataz
blanco, mulato o negro desgastado que explotaban a los
esclavos en tiempos coloniales. Danza popular apropiada por
un estamento pretendidamente elitista, por su paso de baile
fuerte y el uso del ltigo.
Waka waka
La danza de las vacas. En realidad son dos danzas diferentes
con la misma meloda: una es urbana Waka Toqori (vaca de
bilia), inspirado en la corrida de toros, su director de danza es
el torero. La otra es la tinti waka (vaca negra), representa el
rito rural de la siembra con yunta de bueyes. Los labriegos son,
en un caso, los kusillu (monos) y, en otro, las autoridades
ancestrales. El varn conduciendo la yunta y la esposa dejando
caer la semilla (hojas de coca).
Sus agregadas son las lecheras con vestimenta muy abrigada
para protegerse del fro invernal de las madrugadas.
Kallawaya
Nombre correcto Qolla wayu (los que llevan la medicina). Es
danza del folklore de Chuma, provincia Muecas de La Paz. El

This dance represents the popular reproach of people who
without a degree to back them up are called Doctor by
themselves and others. This dance was created in the period of
wayra levas (levas in the wind).
Tarka (tarqueada)
It is a seasonal dance, which begins November 2nd and ends
after Sundays temptations. The tarqa (an indigenous wind
instrument) is played in this occasion.
Qantu
it consists of two groups one of dancer musicians and the other
just dancers who perform the dance in couples. The Qantu
(indigenous wind instrument) is destined for Andean rituals at
some time of year.

Tarqueada
atuendo tradicional y original es la del turista de fines del siglo
XIX: sombrero de jipijapa (plano) anteojos ahumados, camisa
tipo hawaiano, pantaln de color y, en la mano, un quitasol de
papel (japons). La mujer de chola, el sombrero de jipijapa,
el quitasol y un antifaz. Les da la categora de kallawayas su
Kapachu (bolsa para llevar las yerbas medicinales).
Doctorcitos
Danza que representa al reproche popular a los que sin tener
un ttulo acadmico que los respalde, se dicen o se hacen
decir Doctor. Danza creada en el periodo de los wayra levas
(levas al viento).
Tarqa (tarqueada)
Msica y danza de temporada que se inicia el 2 de noviembre
y termina despus del domingo de tentaciones, con la
ejecucin de la tarqa (instrumento autctono de viento).
Qantu
Msicos danzantes y un cuerpo de baile por parejas. El uso del
qantu (instrumento autctono de viento) est destinado para
los ritos andinos en alguna poca del ao.

 Tinku
Tinku
This dance represents the charka culture; the first nation in the
Qolla Suyu that made alliance with the Spaniards during the
conquest. The costume comes from this partnership. It consists
of a pair of pants, a Castilian jacket, an armor (vest), a scarf, a
montera (a kind of helmet) imitating the Spanish helmet and the
Nuku (a kind of Mitten).
Awatiri
This dance presents the ballet steps, but its costume suggests an
autochthonous origin. It is related to the supposed shepherds.
The costume does not have elements of the shepherds guild like
qorawa which is the package with food, and chulu hat which lluchu contra el fro. Algunas universidades dicen que
is used against the cold. Some universities say that they represent
the young men called water carriers this confusion was created
by the other dialect pronunciation of Awatias.
Suri sikuri
The steps of this dance are associated to the suri or Andean
ostrich. Men and women dancers represent Suris. There are not
musicians who dance and they do not have their own music like
in the indigenous groups.
Wititis
Due to the crossed rope that is at the dancers back, he could be a
kind of llamero and by the rhythmic steps and jumps; he could be a
mountainside inhabitant.

Danza que representa a la cultura charka, primera nacin del Qolla
Suyu que hizo alianza con los castellanos durante la conquista. De
esa alianza proviene el traje tpico que hoy conocemos como el
pantaln, la casaca castellana, la armadura (chaleco), la bufanda,
la montera imitando al casco espaol y el uku (manopla).
Awatiri
La danza presenta pasos del ballet clsico aunque su atuendo
sugiere un origen autctono relacionado a los supuestos
pastores. No cuentan con elementos propios del gremio de
los pastores como la qorawa, el bulto con la merienda y el
representan a los jvenes aguateros; confusin creada por la
otra pronunciacin dialectal de awatia.
Suri sikuri
Danza en la que los pasos estn relacionadas con el suri
o avestruz andino, los danzarines hombres y mujeres
representan a los suris. No son msicos danzantes como en
las agrupaciones autctonas y no tienen msica propia.
Wititis
Debido a la cuerda que llevan terciada al dorso, seran una
especie de llameros. Por los pasos de su baile rtmico y con
brincos, sugiere a los habitantes de una ladera montaosa.

Phujllay
Phujllay means game or entertainment in the Quechua
language and it also means the same as anata in Aymara). It is
the Yampara dance to remember those killed people in the battle
against the Spanish.
Jalqa
The name comes from the costumes colours where white, grey
brown stand. Dancers have a preference of the charango in
their parties.
Phujllay
Phujllay significa juego o diversin est en lengua quechua
y significa lo mismo que anata en aymara). Es la danza de los
Yampara para recordar a los muertos en el combate contra los
espaoles.
Jalqa
El nombre proviene de los colores de su vestimenta en la que
prevalecen el blanco, el gris y el marrn. Tienen preferencia
por el charango en sus fiestas.

National Band Festival
The first festival was held on 2nd February 2002, with the
participation of 2,600 musicians from 52 bands from Oruro as a
corollary of the many band concerts that they performed in different
areas. It is carried on, prior to the development of the Carnival.
The second festival (2003) was developed with 4,000 members of 53
bands and a year later (2004) the number of instrument performers
joined 5,000.
In 2005 it was proposed to be registered in the Guinness Records
Book. The fifth version of the National Festival was inaugurated by
the Bolivian President, Evo Morales, who a year later (2007) was a
witness of the grant of the register certificate as a New Guinness
Record by UNESCO in 2008 the Festival was attended by over 6,000
musicians. In 2009, the National Band Festival receives the Supreme
Decree 0009, which authorizes the creation of the first Bolivian
Intercultural School of Music, in tribute to all artists, musicians and
composers as major actors of the Carnival of Oruro.

El primer festival se llev a cabo el 2 de febrero de 2002, con la
participacin de 2.600 msicos de 52 bandas de Oruro como
corolario de las numerosas retretas que realizaban las bandas,
en diferentes zonas. Se realiza previo al desarrollo del Carnaval.
El segundo festival (2003) se desarroll con 4.000 integrantes
de 53 bandas musicales y un ao ms tarde (2004) el nmero
de ejecutantes de instrumentos sum a 5.000. El ao 2005 fue
propuesto para ser inscrito en el libro de los Records Guinnes.
La quinta versin del Festival Nacional Fue inaugurada por
el Presidente de la Repblica, Evo Morales Ayma, quien un
ao ms tarde (2007) fue testigo de que la UNESCO otorg
el certificado de su inscripcin como nuevo Record Guinnes.
El ao 2008 el Festival cont con participacin de ms de
6.000 msicos. El ao 2009, el Festival Nacional de Bandas
recibe del Gobierno Nacional el Decreto Supremo 0009, que
crea la Primera Escuela Boliviana Intercultural de Msica,
en homenaje a todos los artistas, msicos y compositores,
principales protagonistas del Carnaval de Oruro.

El sapo, Anatanorte
Andean anata
The Andean anata represents the physical and symbolic
presence of native peoples in the city to recover the ancient and
millenarian culture. It is a jolly activity where all people eat and
drink fully; they dance according to the rhythm of wind musical
instruments, characteristic of Jallupacha or rainy weather such
as tarkas, moceos and others. The ritual sense is linked to the
time when crops have flourished (sign of good production) and
so it is celebrated with Anata as an example of the harmonious
relationship between the Andean man and his natural
environment or Pachamama, who is thanked for all the benefits
people have received.
The music is enhanced by tarqueadas and Moseadas. The
tarqueda uses instruments such as tarkas from bad type
(medium) and mama Likus which are made from wood called
Tarko. The Percussion instruments are drums, boxes, bass drums
and cymbals. Among moceos the irasus (the smallest), and
mama Likus or seconds, the aslus and large salliwas are found;
other accompanying instruments are drums or boxes and shrill.
Moseada is a dance to request rain so it should be developed
during Carnival period.
Men and women carry the paquma which is an Aguayo tied
behind their backs loaded with plants which represent the first
products in each sector and make reference to the harvest.
Musicians also play other instruments like the charango and

Anata Andina
El anata andino representa la presencia fsica y simblica de
los pueblos originarios en la ciudad para recuperar la cultura
ancestral y milenaria. La conducta ritual es de regocijo pues
durante la actividad se come y se bebe plenamente, se baila al
comps de instrumentos musicales de viento caractersticos
del Jallupacha o tiempo de lluvias como tarkas, moceos y
otros. Su sentido ritual est vinculado al tiempo en que los
cultivos han florecido (seal de buena produccin) y se celebra
con el Anata, como una muestra de la relacin armnica del
hombre andino con su entorno natural o Pachamama, a la que
se agradece por los beneficios recibidos.
En relacin a la msica, se destacan la tarqueada y la moseada.
Para la tarqueda se utilizan instrumentos tales como tarkas
del tipo mala (medianas) y mama likus construidos de una
madera llamada tarko. Los instrumentos de percusin son
los tambores o cajas, bombos y platillos. Entre los moceos
figuran los irasus (los ms pequeos), mama likus o segundos,
los aslus y los salliwas grandes; otros instrumentos que
acompaan son los tambores o cajas, el tambor y el chilln.
Se considera que la moseada es una danza propicia para la
peticin de lluvias, por lo que se la debe ejecutar durante la
poca de Carnaval.
Los varones y las mujeres cargan la paquma que es un aguayo
atado a la espalda cargado con plantas que representan los

qhunqhuta instrumento cordfono; la pinquillada que se la

como los sikus, el khunu, el tambor y bombo.
El color y la forma de los prendas de los danzarines varan segn
el ayllu o cantn al que representan y la danza que interpretan.

The condor
It is a mythological site which represents the Taypi, where the
opposites are met. It comes from the Uru mythology.
Address: South Zone, it is accessed by Toms Fras and La Salle
Streets.
The northern toad
It is the image of a toad that, according to mythology, it was
petrified by the usta, it was one of the plagues sent by Wari God
against the Uru people.
Address: North Zone in Toms Barrn Avenue.
The toad of the Socavon
It is located in the Plaza of Folklore, under the Miner monument .
It is believed that the frog was petrified by the usta.
Address: Central Zone, Opposite the Socavons Sanctuary.
The snake
According to mythology, the reptile was sent to kill the Uru
people, it was petrified by the usta as well. The site is visited
the first Friday of every month. People make offerings to the
Pachamama.

Sitio mitolgico que representa el TAYPI, donde se encuentran
los opuestos. Proviene de la mitologa Uru.

El sapo del norte
Imagen de un batracio que, segn la mitologa, fue petrificado
por la usta; fue una de las plagas que envi el dios Wari
contra el pueblo Uru.

Ubicado en la Plaza del Folklore, debajo del monumento al
Minero. Se cree que el batracio fue petrificado por la usta.

La vbora
Segn la mitologa, el reptil enviado para aniquilar al pueblo
de los Uru, fue petrificado por la usta. El lugar es visitado
los primeros viernes de cada mes para realizar ofrendas a la
Pachamama.

The lizard
It is another pest that was petrified by the usta, it was separated
from its head, which caused a red lagoon in Cala Cala area, and
according to the legend, it is the lizards blood.

Ants
On the surroundings of Oruro there are huge sand dunes that
represent the thousands of ants that were sent to devour the Uru
villagers. Such ants were turned into sand by the usta.

separada de su cabeza, que origin una laguna de color rojizo,
en el sector de Cala Cala, y que segn la leyenda, es la sangre
del lagarto.

Las hormigas
En los alrededores de Oruro se encuentran inmensas dunas
de arena que representan a las miles de hormigas que fueron
enviadas para devorar al pueblo Uru. Fueron convertidas en
arena por la usta.

Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria
2 de febrero (ciudad de Oruro)
Fiesta en Honor a la Virgen de la Candelaria, conocida tambin
como Virgen del Socavn; es la patrona de los mineros y del
Carnaval de Oruro. Su imagen se venera en el Santuario del
Socavn con miles de feligreses que realizan una peregrinacin
por diferentes calles y avenidas de la ciudad.

It is known as the Santiaguito feast, this is a popular celebration
where people share deep-rooted traditional activities. It takes
place in Quitaya to 15 kilometres from the city. A traditional

It is a well-established Celebration in Wallchapi to 30 miles from
Oruro. It is considered to be the cradle of the Embroiderers of La
Paz Street. It is a traditional ceremony of Pisa Pisa which is proper
of morenada dance.
Asunta Virgens day
August 15th (Paria and Oruro)
Festivity that takes place in the city; it is dedicated to the Asunta
Virgin, through band serenades at the Cathedral. Dances and
music fairs are also performed in Paria.
Exaltation Lords Day
September 14th (Cala Cala town)
It is a festivity that takes place in Cala Cala, located at about
25 kilometres from the city where people worship the Christ
Redeemer image or Exaltation Lord. It is also known as the festival
of Tata Lakes because there is a lagoon nearby. The festival is
very popular because many parishioners meet there.
Quillacas Lords Day
September 14th (Quillacas Sanctuary)
It takes place at the Quillacas Sanctuaryf. Every year large
numbers of parishioners meet there to participate in this festivity.
Folk and orchestral musical groups gladden the celebration.

Festividad patronal que se realiza en la capilla de Nuestra
Seora del Carmen ubicada en las faldas del cerro Santa

cermica. Es la patrona del municipio de Challapata donde
realizan una entrada folklrica a devocin de la Virgen.
Fiesta del Apstol Santiago
25 de Julio (comunidad de Quitaya y ciudad de Oruro)
Conocido como la festividad de Santiaguito, es la fiesta popular de
las familias orureas donde se comparten actividades tradicionales
muy arraigadas. En la localidad de Quitaya a 15 kilmetros de la
ciudad se desarrolla una entrada tradicional folklrica.

Festividad muy arraigada en la localidad Wallchapi distante a casi
30 kilmetros de la ciudad de Oruro, considerada la cuna de los
bordadores de la calle La Paz. Durante la fiesta, se realiza la tradicional
ceremonia del Pisa Pisa propia de la danza de la morenada.
Fiesta de la Virgen Asunta
15 de Agosto (Paria y ciudad de Oruro)
Fiesta patronal que se lleva a cabo en la ciudad, en la que se
venera a la Virgen de la Asunta con serenatas de bandas y
cnticos en la Catedral de Oruro. Tambin se realizan ferias
con danzas y msica en la localidad de Paria.
Fiesta del Seor de Exaltacin
14 de Septiembre (localidad de Cala Cala)
Fiesta que se desarrolla en la localidad de Cala Cala, ubicada a
casi 25 kilmetros de la ciudad, donde se venera a la imagen
del Cristo Redentor o Seor de la Exaltacin. Tambin es
conocida como la festividad del Tata Lagunas debido a que
en las cercanas se encuentra una laguna. La festividad es muy
concurrida por feligreses.
