Lesson Plan
Lesson Plan Title: An Introduction to Vitamins, Minerals, and Water
Grade Level(s): 10-12
Field of Specialization: Family and Consumer Sciences
Duration: 90 min class period
Objectives: Given a team game students will be able to select the functions and sources of vitamins,
minerals, and water based on that days lecture.
Materials: overhead, overhead slides, picture books: water, bones, nutrient handout, construction paper
Procedures:
A. Preparation- Introduction of what will be done to get the students to learn. Must include the following
1. Link- Students will list the food they ate for dinner from last night.
2. Motivation: I will ask the students if they know some sources of nutrients that can make a healthy
diet.
3. Overview- The lesson is to have the students recognize the functions and sources of vitamins,
minerals, and water.
B. Presentation-new information and concepts being taught on overhead.
Key points methods:
1. Intro (15 min.) Students list the foods they ate last night. Give them a definition of a healthy diet and
ask if they know if that meal is a good source of vitamins, minerals and water.
2. Lecture: Have a lecture including overhead and materials.
A) Vitamins
1. Functions
2. Types
3. Sources
B) Minerals
1. Functions
2. Types
3. Sources
C) Water
1. Functions
2. Types
3. Sources
C. Application-Ask students to list the sources of vitamins, minerals, and water in the dinner that they
listed last night. Then ask the students to fill in the foods on a semantic feature analysis sheet that lets
students decide which nutrients each food contains. After, put the students in groups of three or four and
share their findings. Lastly, pick some students to share their results with the whole class. If needed
corrector answer questions about sources of vitamin, minerals and water.
Key Points Method 2. (10 min.) Students will play a game called Nutrient Tic-Tac-Toe. The teacher will
split the students into two groups down the middle of the classroom. The game board is places on
display on the overhead. The game will last three rounds. The game will be in this order: vitamins,
mineral, water. The game is played by alternating groups to choose a square on the game board. If they
guess that food is a correct source of a nutrient or not, then the teacher will place a game piece on that
square. Whoever gets their three pieces in a row wins that round.
Assessment:
Given a team game students will be able to select the functions and sources of vitamins, minerals, and
water based on that days lecture. Teacher will orally review the students of important concepts by
listing the function of vitamins, minerals, and water and asking random students what the sources of
each are.
Adaptations (For Students with Special Needs): Have a power point print out for special needs students
with the whole lecture on it.
