SURVEYING I

Unit I

1. A rectangular plot of land of area 0.45 hectares is represented on a map by a similar rectangle area
of 5 cm2. Calculate the RF of the scale of the map. Draw a scale to read up to a single metre from
the map. The scale should by long enough to measure up to 400m.

2. The length of a survey line measured with a 30 m chain was found to be 631.5 m. When the chain
was compared with a standard chain, it was found to be 0.10 m too long. Find the true length of
survey line.

3. The length of a line measured with 30m chain was found to be 650m. Calculate the true length of
the line if the chain is 120 mm too short and too long.

4. A line was measured by a 20 m chain, which was accurate before starting the days work. After
chaining 900m, the chain was found to be 6 cm too long, after chaining a total distance of 1575 m,
the chain was found to be 14 cm too long. Find the true distance of the line.

4. An area actually measures 0.8094 hectares. How much it will measure in square meter by a
30.48 m chain which was 20.32 cm too short at the start and 60.96 cm too long at the end of
survey.

5. A line was measured with a steel tape which was exactly 30 m at 20 C and at a pull of 98.1N, the
measured length being 1650 m. The temperature during measurement was 30 C and the pull was
147.15N. Find the length of the line if the cross sectional area of the tape was 0.025 cm2. The
coefficient of expansion of the material of the tape per C = 3.5x10-6 and modulus of elasticity of
material = 2.6 x 105 N/mm2.

6. The distance between the points measured along a slope is 428m. Find the horizontal distance
between them, if the slope is 1 in 4.

7. Find the corrected scale of the old map when its shrinking factor is 24/25 and the RF is 1/2400.

8. A surveyor measures the distance between two pints on a plan and calculate the length to be equal
to 650 m assuming the scale of plan to be 1 cm = 50 m. Later it was discovered that the scale of
plan was 1 cm = 40 m. Find the true distance between the points.

9. The area of a plot on a map is found, by planimeter to be 10.22 cm2. The scale of map was 1:
25000, but at present it is shrunk that a line originally 5 cm on the map is now 4.8 cm. What is the
correct field area in hectares?

8. There is an obstacle in the form of a pond on the main chain line AB. Two points C and D were
taken on the opposite sides of the pond. On left of CD, a line CE was laid out 100m in length and a
second line CF, 80m long was laid out on the right of CD such that E, D and F are in the same
straight line. ED and DF were measured and found to be 60 m and 56 m respectively. Find out
the obstructed length CD.
9. A and B are two points 1000m apart on the nearer bank of a river which flows East to West. The
bearing of a tree on the other bank of the river as observed from A and B were N 30 E and N
40W respectively. Find the width of the river.

10. In passing an obstacle in the form of a pond, stations A and D where on the main line were taken
on the opposite sides of a pond. On the left of AD a line AB 400m long was laid down and a
second line AC 500m long was ranged on the right of AD. The points B,D and C being in the same
straight line. BD and DC were then chained and found to be 260m and 300m respectively. Find the
obstructed length of AD.

11. A chain line MN intersects a pond. Two points AB are taken on the chain line on opposite sides of
the pond. A line AC 240m long is set out on the left of AB and another line AD 290m long is set
out on the right of AB. Points C,B and D are in the same straight line. CB and BD are 110m and
140m long respectively. Calculate the length of AB.

12. To Continue a survey line past an obstacle in the form of a pond, Stations A and B on the main line
were taken on opposite sides of the pond. A line AC, 315m long was laid down on the left of AB,
and a second line AD, 270m long was laid down on the right of AB, the points C, B, and D being
in the same straight line. CB and BD were then measured and found to be 156m and 174m
respectively. Find the length of AB.

13. A survey line ABC crosses a river B and C are the points near and opposite banks of the river.
Point D is selected such that D is at a perpendicular distance of 60 m from the survey line ABC.
The bearing of C and B are 310 deg and 220 deg respectively from D. Chainage of B is 30 m. Find
the width of the river.

14. In passing an obstacle in the form of a pond, stations A and D a line AB 200m long was laid
down and a second line AC, 250 m long was ranged on the right of AD, the points B,D and C
being in the same straight line. BD and DC were the chained and found to be 125 m and 150 m
respectively. Find the length of AD.

15. A river flows from west to east . For determining the width of theriver two points A and B are
selected on the southern bank such that distance AB = 120 m. The point A is west wards. The
bearing of tree C on the northern bank are observed to be 50 and 340 from A and B
respectively. Calculate the width of river.
