Objective

This proje ct aims to facilitate the imple me ntation of the Circular Economy package and the SPIRE Roadmap in various
proce s s indus trie s by de ve loping the ne ce s s ary conce pts , te chnological s olutions and bus ine s s mode ls to re -de s ign
the value and s upply chains of mine rals (including magne s ium) and wate r, while de aling with pre s e nt organic
compounds in a way that allows the ir s ubs e que nt re cove ry.

This is achie ve d by de mons trating ne w configurations to re cove r the s e re s ource s from s aline impaire d e fflue nts
(brine s ) ge ne rate d by proce s s indus try, while e liminating was te wate r dis charge and minimis ing e nvironme ntal impact of
indus trial ope rations through brine s (ZERO BRINE). The proje ct will bring toge the r and inte grate s e ve ral e xis ting and
innovative te chnologie s aiming to re cove r e nd-products of high quality and s ufficie nt purity with good marke t value . It
will be carrie d out by large Proce s s Indus trie s , SMEs with dis ruptive te chnologie s and a Brine Cons ortium of te chnology
s upplie rs acros s EU, while world-clas s re s e arch ce ntre s e ns ure s trong s cie ntific capacity and inte r-dis ciplinary
coordination to account for s ocial, e conomic and e nvironme ntal cons ide rations , including LCA.

A large s cale de mons tration will be de ve lope d in the Ene rgy Port and Pe troche mical clus te r of Rotte rdam Port, involving
local large indus trie s . Two de mo plants will be able to tre at part of the brine e fflue nts ge ne rate d by one proce s s
indus try (EVIDES), while the was te he at will be s ource d by ne ighbouring factorie s . The quality of the re cove re d e nd-
products will be aime d to me e t local marke t s pe cifications . The involve me nt of re pre s e ntative s cove ring the whole
s upply chain will provide an e xce lle nt opportunity to s howcas e Circular Economy in Rotte rdam Port, at large s cale .
Finally, thre e large -s cale pilot plants will be de ve lope d in othe r proce s s indus trie s , providing the pote ntial for imme diate
re plication and uptake of the proje ct re s ults afte r its s ucce s s ful comple tion.
