THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Background of the Study

Nowadays we the Senior High School students are belong to the 20 th

century or the electronic age, were technology is much updated, Technology is

an essential part of our lives today and few can imagine living without. We

achieved a lot with the help of technology, the important is to bear in mind the

mutual goal: to keep the planet with mankind and all its beautiful animals and

plants alive. This implies to make technology as positive as possible for humanity

and the environment in the long run. The technology we create now creates the

future and it should be for the people and make things easier and not more

complicated. The association of STI made a software (programs that do work

users are directly interested in) that is interactive educational app, engaging

social networking platform, they called it the Electronic Learning Management

System (ELMS) a personal organizer all in one the eLMS has your student life

covered.

Electronic Learning Management System (ELMS) helps student to

Review, study ahead, and catch up on their assignments wherever, whenever. A

change in scenery might even help them absorb new information better. All they

need is an internet connection! Check out the eLMS on their smartphone, tablet,

laptop or desktop computer, or download the eLMS app for free. Challenge their

selves by taking interactive quizzes. Practice it until they have mastered the

concepts and theories in their subjects. Complete as many courses as they want

5
Definition of terms

The following terms are defined conceptually and operationally for the

better understanding of the readers.

Academic Performance (https://www.igi-global.com, 2013) - The

academic performance is defined by students reporting of past semester

CGPA/GPA and their expected GPA for the current semester. The grade point

average or GPA is now used by most of the tertiary institutions as a convenient

summary measure of the academic performance of their students. The GPA is a

better measurement because it provides a greater insight into the relative level of

performance of individuals and different group of students. Learn more in: Use of

Online Social Networking and Academic Performance of Students. Operationally

we use this term in our research as Dependent variables. Dependent variable is

the values that result from the independent variables.

Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS)

(http://www.sti.edu/studies, 2016) - The STI Electronic Learning Management

System (eLMS) is the new home for your learning needs outside of the

classroom. An interactive educational app, engaging social networking platform,

and personal organizer all in one the eLMS has your student life covered.

Operationally we use this term in our research as the independent variable. An

independent variable is the variable that is changed or controlled in a scientific

experiment to test the effects.

6
Software (http://www.businessdictionary.com, 2015) - Software consists

of carefully-organized instructions and code written by programmers in any of

various special computer languages. Software is divided commonly into two main

categories: (1) System software: controls the basic (and invisible to the user)

functions of a computer and comes usually preinstalled with the machine. See

also BIOS and Operating System. (2) Application software: handles multitudes of

common and specialized tasks a user wants to perform, such as accounting,

communicating, data processing, word processing. Operationally in our research

Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS) is a software that we are using.

We can get or you can get it by downloading the application or going to their

website on the internet.

Electronic gadget (http://www.yourdictionary.com, 2005) - A useful little

gadget. Licensed from iStockPhoto. noun. The definition of a gadget is a small,

unique-use mechanical or electronic device. An example of a gadget is a lime

squeezer. Operationally we use Electronic gadget as basis of what kind of

electronic gadgets does the students used in operating/manipulating the

Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS).

Senior High School Students (http://www.yourdictionary.com, 2015) -

Senior high school is a secondary school that students attend in the three or four

highest grades before college. A high school where someone is a freshman,

sophomore, junior and senior in 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades is an example of

a senior high school. Operationally we use Senior High School Students as our

respondents in our research.

7
Academic status (https://sha.cornell.edu, 2016) - Good Standing: a

registered full-time student, enrolled in 12 or more credit hours (not including

phys ed), whose semester and cumulative grade-point average (GPA) are 2.0 or

higher. Warning: issued when a student's semester and/or cumulative GPA fall

below 2.0. Operationally we use this term in our research to determine the

academic performance of the STI- College Tacurong Senior High School

students.

Implementation (http://searchcrm.techtarget.com, 2013) - is the carrying

out, execution, or practice of a plan, a method, or any design, idea, model,

specification, standard or policy for doing something. As such, implementation is

the action that must follow any preliminary thinking in order for something to

actually happen. Operationally Implementation is the thing day made to follow by

the student the Implementation of Electronic Learning Management System

(eLMS).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter contains about the related studies and review of related

literature of the study in titled The impact of the implementation of Electronic

Learning Management System (eLMS) to the STI-College Tacurong Senior High

School students.

Y-S, Wang (2003), Assessment of learner satisfaction with asynchronous

electronic learning systems. The electronic learning (e-learning) literature has not

addressed the measurement of learner satisfaction with asynchronous e-learning

systems. Current models for measuring user satisfaction (US) and students

evaluation of teaching effectiveness (SETE) are perceived as inapplicable as

they are targeted primarily towards either organizational information systems or

classroom education environment. My study developed a comprehensive model

and instrument for measuring learner satisfaction with asynchronous e-learning

systems. The procedures used in conceptualizing the survey, generating items,

collecting data, and validating the multiple-item scale are described. This study

carefully examined evidence of reliability, content validity, criterion-related

validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and nomological validity by

analyzing data from a sample of 116 adult respondents. The norms of the

instrument were then developed, and the potential applications for practitioners

and researchers explored. Finally, this paper discusses limitations of the work.

The empirically validated instrument should be useful to other researchers in

developing and testing their e-learning theories.

9
Their Studies wants to measure the effectiveness of e-learning in students

teaching. The relationship or similarities of their subject to us we also want to

measure the impact of Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS) but in

different aspects we want to achieve is to determine the adequate response of

students in the following purposes. First, to identify the electronic gadgets

commonly used by the students. Second, to know how often do students use

Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS). Third, to know what are the

benefits of using Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS) on the

academic performance of the students and lastly to know if there is a significant

difference among the responses of the impact of Electronic Learning

Management System to the academic performance of the student.

S, Lonn (2009). Saving time or innovating practice: Investigating

perceptions and uses of Learning Management System. Learning Management

Systems (LMS) are web-based systems that allow instructors and/or students to

share materials, submit and return assignments, and communicate online. In this

study, we explored the uses and perceived benefits of using a LMS to support

traditional classroom teaching as reported by instructors and students at a large

American Midwestern university. We examined two years of survey data focusing

on specific uses of the LMS that emphasized either efficient communication or

interactive teaching and learning practices. We matched aggregate user log data

with corresponding survey items to see if system use was consistent with

patterns seen in the survey results. Findings suggest that instructors and

students value tools and activities for efficient communication more than

10
interactive tools for innovating existing practices. However, survey item analysis

reveals that instructors and students also highly value the teaching and learning

tools within the LMS.

This study has a nearly similarities to our software which is the Electronic

Learning Management System (eLMS) the goal of this software has a similarities

to the concept of Learning Management System (LMS). Their study wants to

allow instructors and/or students to share materials, submit and return

assignments, and communicate online using the Learning Management Systems

(LMS) are web-based systems.

H, Selim (2007) Critical success factors for e-learning acceptance:

Confirmatory factor models. E-learning, one of the tools emerged from

information technology, has been integrated in many university programs. There

are several factors that need to be considered while developing or implementing

university curriculums that offer e-learning based courses. This paper is intended

to specify e-learning critical success factors (CSFs) as perceived by university

students. The published e-learning critical success factors were surveyed and

grouped into 4 categories namely, instructor, student, information technology,

and university support. Each category included several measures. The

categorization was tested by surveying 538 university students. The results

revealed 8 categories of e-learning CSFs, each included several critical e-

learning acceptance and success measures. The level of criticality of each

measure was represented by its validity coefficient. Confirmatory factor modeling

11
approach was used to assess the criticality of the measures included in each

CSF category.

This study wants to measure the critical success factors of e-learning we

all know that e-learning has also a benefits to us we us the researcher wants to

make a study to present to the other people on how e-learning is very beneficiary

to us, because the main goal and purpose of e-learning is to give access to

students online, even though they cant make to go to school there is another

way that they can also learn. They can communicate to their teacher by the use

of e-learning anytime anywhere.

C, Liu, K, Arnett (2000) Exploring the factors associated with Web site

success in the context of electronic commerce. Web sites are being widely

deployed commercially. As the widespread use and dependency on Web

technology increases, so does the need to assess factors associated with Web

site success. The objective is to explore these factors in the context of electronic

commerce (EC). The research framework was derived from information systems

and marketing literature. Webmasters from Fortune 1000 companies were used

as the target group for a survey. Four factors that are critical to Web site success

in EC were identified: (1) information and service quality, (2) system use, (3)

playfulness, and (4) system design quality. An analysis of the data provides

valuable managerial implications for Web site success in the context of electronic

commerce.

This article reviews literature from the past 33 years particular to the use

of electronic response system in college lecture halls. Electronic response

systems, primarily used in science courses. Have allowed students to provide

Immediate feedback to multiple choice questions. And inform the instructor of

student understanding. Research from the 1960s and 1970s indicates there is no

significant correlation between student academic achievements and a stimulus-

response method of using such systems. Recent studies have indicated there is

significant student increase of conceptual gains in physics when electronic

response systems are used to facilitate feedback in a constructivist-oriented

13
classroom. Students have always favored the use of electronic response system

and attribute such factors such as attentiveness and personal understanding to

using electronics response systems. Ultimately, this review of literature points to

the pedagogical practices of the instructor. Not the incorporation of the

technology as being key to student comprehension. Electronic response

systems are viewed as a tool that holds a promise of facilities earnest

discussion. Recommendations are made that professional development focus on

pedagogical practice for instructors considering the use of an electronic

response system.

The concept of their studies is using Electronic Response System to

provide immediate feedback to the multiple choice questions, the learning from

past and present of using Electronic Response System. And inform the instructor

of student understanding. The relationship between our studies is in our studies

Web-based Learning Management System (LMS) allow instructors and students

to share instructional materials, make class announcements, submit and return

course assignments, and communicate with each other online. Previous LMS-

related research has focused on how these systems deliver and manage

instructional content with little concern for how students constructivist learning

can be encouraged and facilitated. This study investigated how students use

LMS to interact, collaborate, and construct knowledge within the context of a

group project but without mediation by the instructor.

The setting for this case study was students' use in one upper-level biology

course of the local LMS within the context of a course-related group project, a

mock National Institutes of Health grant proposal. Twenty-one groups (82

students) voluntarily elected

to use the LMS, representing two-thirds of all students in the course. Students'

peer-topeer messages within the LMS, event logs, online surveys, focus group

interviews, and instructor interviews were used in order to answer the study's

overarching research

17
question. The results indicate that students successfully used the LMS to interact

and, to a significant extent, collaborate, but there was very little evidence of

knowledge construction using the LMS technology. It is possible that the ease

and availability of face-to-face meetings as well as problems and limitations with

the technology were factors that influenced whether students' online basic

interaction could be further distinguished as collaboration or knowledge

construction. Despite these limitations, students found several tools and

functions of the LMS useful for their online peer interaction and completion of

their course project. Additionally, LMS designers and implementers are urged to

consider previous literature on computer-supported collaborative learning

environments in order to better facilitate independent group projects within these

systems. Further research is needed to identify the best types of xii scaffolds and

overall technological improvements in order to provide support for online

collaboration and knowledge construction.

Learning Management System is very useful to use, that is why the STI

Implement the use of Electronic Learning Management System (eLMS) we as

the researcher we also encountered this implementation. For us it is good to use

because it is very helpful, but this also can affect the academic status of a

student. We dont know the financial stability of every student in STI-College

academic performance of the students base on their Personal status.

Summary

This study focuses on the impact of the implementation of Electronic

Learning Management System (eLMS) on the academic performance of the

Senior High School Students. The researcher used a descriptive form of

research design. This included the primary and secondary data. A survey
