In January 2005, more than 16 million subscribers

are using UMTS services at a speed of up to 384

kbps. This endless need for higher data rates and
lower latency drives Operators to optimize their

Thanks to its leadership in 1xEVDO - the HSDPA
like solution for CDMA 2000 - and more than 5
years of UMTS development, Nortel will empower
the UMTS Networks with a smooth and software
only migration path towards HSDPA.

Empowering UMTS Networks with HSDPA
Delivery of Multimedia content though Mobile Networks, as well as person to person IP-based
communications will generate additional revenue but will dramatically increase the need for
capacity and bandwidth.
HSDPA improves system capacity and increases user data rates in the downlink direction, with
high peak data rate up to 14.4 Mbps.

Nortels HSDPA Momentum and Achievements
First to enter the HSDPA reality with Wireless E2E HSDPA calls in October 2004, Nortel
is seen as a Leader in UMTS evolution and is committed to deliver an E2E HSDPA Live
Trial in Q2 2005, followed by Commercial HSDPA solution in Q4 2005.

HSDPA is real and Nortel is the first Infrastructure vendor to deliver a full open and 3GPP
compliant air interface. This will lead to Mobile broadband services including high-resolution
interactive gaming, multimedia music tracks, DVD-quality video, and push-to-watch services
at a speed three times faster than todays commercial third generation (3G) networks.

For example, a five-megabyte music file has been downloaded in less than 15 seconds, and
an e-mail with a three-megabyte attachment in 10 seconds, which is comparable to DSL or
ADSL speeds.

On January 13th of 2005, Nortel and Qualcomm completed the first handset based HSDPA
Drive Calls over a live air connection to a moving automobile at a speed of 70 km/h. Such an
achievement demonstrates the stability of the connection in a real-world environment.
Nortel is also the first to have completed in January 2005 HSDPA Drive Calls with Data cards
from Sierra Wireless.

2
Furthermore, Nortel has achieved a series of HSDPA Wireless calls with major Pan-European
Operators which are planning Nortels HSDPA trials and deployments in 2005.

IOT will drive HSDPA Successful launch

As it has been the case for R99 UMTS launch, Technology Suppliers and Device
Manufacturers Interoperability Testing (IOT) is key to ensure a successful deployment of
HSDPA.
With 23 IOT labs across the World, and thanks to an advanced IOT testing with major HSDPA
Device Manufacturers, Nortel is committed to ensure its customers a successful HSDPA
deployment.
Allowing a faster Time To Market launch, as well as a reduced upgrade cost, Nortel is
proposing its customers a faster return on investment and a clear competitive advantage in
todays complex wireless marketplace.

Nortel HSDPA IOT program benefits

Wireless Operator Benefits Third Party Supplier Benefits

Faster time-to-market Increased market opportunities
Reduced deployment costs Enhanced product value
Streamlined integration Proven product Interoperability
Expanded product offerings Faster, more confident product launches
Lower deployment risk A clear competitive advantage

De-risking commercial HSDPA deployment through early IOT, Nortel provides a mature
Infrastructure/Device solution. Such a strong commitment in this process is the only way to
offer Operators a large choice of terminals and End User applications, allowing a massive
HSDPA deployment.
Nortel is currently working with HSDPA Technology Leaders, including Qualcomm, Sierra
Wireless and Option. More key Terminal Vendors will follow, ensuring a lower risk for Wireless
operators.

Beyond HSDPA
HSDPA is just about to be launched that new technologies are promising ever more bandwidth
and new services like HSUPA (Enhanced DCH in 3GPP Release 6) and Turbo HSDPA
HSDPA enhanced with MIMO (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output) and OFDM (Orthogonal
Frequency Division Multiplexing) technologies - in 3GPP Release 7.

Going further to 3GPP Release 7 and to ensure competitiveness in an even longer time frame,
i.e. for the next 10 years and beyond, a long-term evolution of the 3GPP radio-access
technology is now under investigation in 3GPP RAN Working Group. Nortel demonstrated its
leadership in the studies which have led up to the December 2004 agreement of the 3GPP
Study Item on Evolved UTRA and UTRAN.
