using phonetic symbols. There are so many kinds of English subjects that

consist in English, such as grammar, conversation, listening, literature,

pronunciation and vocabulary. One of the important subject is Pronunciation

as the way in which a language or a particular word or sound is spoken. If one

is said to have "correct pronunciation", then it refers to both within a specific

3

groups, depending on many factors, such as: the area in which they grew up,

the area in which they now live, if they have a speech or voice disorder, their

ethnic group, their social class, or their education. That there are two main

steps to learning how to pronounce a language:

1. Receptive/list stage

In this stage, we learn to differentiate the significant sounds and

pattern by listening to the language.

CHAPTER II

THEORITICAL FRAMEWORK

A. The Language

a. The Defenition of Language

Language is the human capacity acquiring and using complex

system of communication. Human language is very unique because it

relies entirely on social convention and learning. Language is very

important doing activities in our life. Without language, every person

doesnt communicate with other people.

Language is tool to make communication in human being life,

imagine if there is no language in this world, without language someone

cant give expression about his feeling. It is systematic communication by

symbol.

Language is the way of people to talk with others. By language we

can recognize the ethnic of people. According to Mackey (1986 : 120),

language is a form and not matter of it is arbiter symbol system sound or

it is kind of system, a system of structure or a structure of system.

According to Lueas (2000: 3) language is system symbol are

organize and used systematically Language is systematic communication

by vocal symbol. It is universal characteristic of the human species. No

one know about its origin, although scientist have identified a gene that

clearly to contributes to the human ability to use language. Scientist

generally hold that is so long in using that the length of time the writing

the visible recording of language particular to the human species writing

8
9

enables that transmission of the idea over vast distances of time and space

of complex civilization.

Language is a system of communication by using of sounds of

conventional symbol. It is a code we all use to express ourselves and

communicate to others and system for communicating ideas, feelings

using sound. Gesture, sing or marks. According to Lyon (2002: 8) that

language are system of symbol designed for the purpose of

communication.

Providing two language understanding. The first nation of

language as stated means of communication system that use system that

uses symbol vocal (speech sound) which are arbitrary.

Meanwhile according tp Owen (2006 : 1), describe the language

definition can be defined as socially share those combinations of symbols

and rule governed, those combinations of symbols (language can be

defined as a socially acceptable code or conventional system for delivering

concepts through the use of symbols and combinations of the desired

symbols are governed by the provisions).

b. The Function of Language

Language is very important for all people because of the language,

people can share what they are thinking and feeling. Language has some

functions. According to sumiati Budiman (1987 : 1), the functions of

language are : (1) Practical functions, language is used as communication

and interaction between members of the public in daily life. (2) cultural

functions, language is as a tool to save, spread and develop culture. (3)

10

Artistic function, language is used as a tool to send sense of aesthetic

human by literary arts. (4) Educative functions, language is used as a tool

to send and develop science and technology, (5) Political functions,

language is used as a tool to integrate and do administration of

government.

Language is a means of communication, and almost always takes

place within some sort of social context. Everybody has realized that the

activity in social context cannot be done without language.

In the global marketplace, language is very important in science

and the development of technology. Without language, there is not

develop of technology and science. By language, we can explain about

something to other people, such as giving information about the

innovation, system, and any other information from the explanation above,

we know that language has big effect for our live.

Language has important meaning our live, has many function also

important role such as the personal feelings, information until fictions and

literature in this world.

c. Parts of Language

According to Wallance (2000 : 200), when describe as a system of

symbolic communication language is traditionally seen as consisting of

three parts, sign, meanings, and a code. Sign can be composed of sounds,

gestures, letters, os symbols, depending on whether the language is spoken

signed, or written, and they can be combined into complex signs, such as
11

words and phrases. Meaning is a relationship between two sorts of things :

signs and the kinds of things namely intend. Express or signify.

Meanwhile, a code is a role for converting a piece of information (for

example ; a letter, word, phrase, or gesture) into another usually shortened

or cover form or representation (one sign into another sign), not necessarily

of the same type. When used in communication, a sign is encoded and

transmitted by a sender through a channel to a receiver who decodes.

However, along with language development, the part of language

become developed as well. Based on wales (2013 : 200), there are fourth

main components of language along with language development namely :

a. Phonology

Phonology involves the rules about the structure and sequence of speech

sounds.

b. Semantic

Simantic consist of vocabulary and how concepts are expressed through

word.

c. Grammar

Grammar involves two part, the first, syntax, is the rule in which words

are arranged into sentence. The second, morphology, is the use of

grammatical markers ( Including tense, active or passive voice, etc).

d. Pragmatic

Pragmatics involves the roles for appropriate and effective

communication. Pragmatic involves three skill:

12

1. Using Language from greeting, demanding, etc

2. Changing language for talking differently depending on who it is

you are talking to.

3. Following rules such as turn taking, staying on topic.

B. The Sub skills In English

English is international language is used in most of the countries in the

world as a second language. As a second language in this world, people

should learn English, because if they cannot speak English they will get a

trouble in communication.

English is more popular in America and British because it is used as the

main language in there, besides that American and England are the icon of

English with their dialects, even though English spreads in all over the world

and becomes an international language with different styles.

More than hundred millions people use English as their main language

and more than those learning English as a second language. Nowadays,

English become the primary language for the speakers through the world. As

an international language English has an important function in the life of

society and nation, moreover, English affects many sector od human culture:

religion, political, and business.

English is one of many languages in the world. According to Webster

(1958 : 254), English is the language spoken by the people of England. Other

scientist also states that English is international language it is used Europe,

13

American, Australia, Asia almost 390 million of people in Asia used English,

(Richard,1985 : 1). English has become daily language they use English as

daily language especially in company. A big company can measure from the

language which use the employee in communication. And they feel, if they

use English in their communication they are more confident.

From the statement above, the researcher can take conclusion that

English is used originally by American and British as the trade mark of

English dialects even though it has been use by people in all over the world a

international language, which we have to master in learning English

language, such as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

The English subs kills also have several parts inside that we should

consider and recognize so we can try to learn or even master about that. They

are English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation sub skills. We would

discuss for further explanation about that in this following sub-chapters.

1. English Grammar Sub Skills

English grammar is one of the most important sub skill in

mastering English. Wood (2013: 8) it is important the outset to be clear

about the meaning about the ambiguous term grammar. Even though

grammar is one of the most confusing subject in English learning, but it

still has the important part.

2. English Vocabulary Sub Skills

Looks easy but actually it has a lot of rules that should be followed

when we want to make them to be one sentence. Vocabulary is very

14

simple to be learned if we memorize it one by one, but it will be quite

confusing when we want to make them to be one sentence because we

must follow the rules of grammar when we want to join them become

one sentence. According to Graver (2006: 2) say that vocabulary is

include become one of the most important English sub skill, because

without vocabularies, English is not a language that be spoken by

everyone.

3. English Pronunciation Sub Skill

Beside to fulfil the completeness of English, English pronunciation

sub skill also has the importance especially in speaking. Without good

pronunciation, it can make some misunderstandings in the English

speaking especially in the English conversation.

C. The definition Pronunciation

Pronunciation is he way in which a language or a particular sound is

pronounced , the way is in which a particular person pronounces the word Of

a language (Oxford Dictionary, 2000 : 15).

Pronunciation is one of the important aspects in English especially in oral

communication, every sound, stress pattern, and intonation may convey

meaning. Sometime we are a the non-active speaker who speaks English do

not realize or try to pay attention of what are we pronounce about as a result,

misunderstanding occurred on our conversation. So that, we have to be

careful in pronouncing some utterance.

15

Pronunciation is the use of sound system in the speaking and listening,

pronunciation is merely treated as the act that occurs in speaking and listening

pronunciation is he act of pronouncing of the words, utterance of speech. In

other word, it can also be said that is a way of speaking a word, especially a

way that is generally understood.

Pronunciation is very important in language ability, because when

someone not clear pronunciation, they cant understand what the mean,

because in language if wrong to pronunciation it same wrong meaning.

D. Part Of Pronunciation

1. Consonants

Some consonant are breathed, and others are voiced. On the way

out the air flow can be more or less obstructed, producing a consonants, or

is simply modified, giving a vowel. If we pronounce the first sound of the

word paper we can close the mouth completely and that is the utmost

obstruction, whereas if we pronounce the first sound of the word after the

mouth is more open than normal, that air flows as fleetly as it possibly can.

Consonant are often classified being giving so- call VPM label.

PVM stands fr voicing, place and manner.

a. Voicing mean that the vocal folds are used; if they are not, the sounds is

voiceless (Note that vowels always imply the use of vocal folds).

b. Place of articulation is the place where the air flow will be more or less

obstructed.
16

c. Manner is concerned with the nature of the obstruction.

According to Daniel (2000:25), consonants may be classified:

1. According to organs with articulate them, there are seven main classes :

a. Labial or lip sounds, which may subdivided into;.

b. Dental, namely sounds articulated by the tip of the tongue against the

upper teeth,.

c. Alveolar, namely sounds articulated by the tip or blade of the tongue

against the teeth ridge. Ex t (tip).

d. Plato Alveolar, namely sounds wich have alveolar articulation

together with a simultaneous raising of the main boy of the.

e. Palatal.namely sounds articulated by the front of the tongue against

the hard plate, ex : J (jes).

f. Velar, namely sounds articulated by the back of the tongue against

the soft plate ex : k (kot).

g. Glottal, namely sound articulated in the glottis, ex : h (hot).

2. According to the manner in which the organs which articulate, there

are eight main classes :

a. Affricate, resembling a plosive but with separation of articulating

organs performed less quickly by a result fricative sound is se

during the process of separation. Ex ts (cruch).

b. Plosive, formed by completely closing the air passage and suddenly

removing obstacle (or one of the obstacles) so that, the air escapes

making an explosive sound, ex : p, d.

17

c. Nasal, formed by completely closing the mouth at some point, the

soft plate remaining lowered so that air is free to past out through the

nose ex, m.

d. Lateral, formed by an obstacle place in the middle of the mouth, the

air are being free to escape at one both sides, ex l.

e. Rolled, formed by a rapid succession of taps of some elastic part of

the speech mechanism, example rolled r.

f. Fricative, formed by like narrowing of the air passage at some point

so that the air escaping makes kind of hissing sound , example f, z

and fricative r.

2. Vowels

According to Jones Daniel, (2000 ;12 ) if the tongue is held very

close to the roof of the mouth and a voice air stream of ordinary force is

emitted, a friction noise is heard in additional to the voice. The sound is

consonant. In the production of vowels the tongue is held is such a

distance from the roof of the mouth that there is no perceptible frictional

voice .

When the tongue takes up a vowel position, According to Ashaby

and Maidment (2005: 83) Vowel are produce when vocal told vibration

excites the personal of the vocal tract a resonance chamber is formed

which modified the quality of tone produced by the voice, and give rise to

district quality or timber which we called a vowels. The number of

18

possible vowels is very large, but the number actually used in any

particular language is small. For example , in Spanish, there are only five

essential vowels. In English there are more.

Talking about classification of vowels, the qualities of vowels depend

upon the position of the tongue and lips. It is convenient to classify them

according to the position the main part of tongue. The position of the tip

has no great effect on vowels quality.

In the production of most vowels the tongue is convex to the plate.

Vowels may there there for be conveniently arrange according to the

position of the highness point of the tongue. There are front vowels, in the

production of which the front of the tongue is raised in the direction in

the hardpalate, example i: in fi:d (feed). There are back vowels, in the

production of which the back or tongue is raised in the direction of the

soft palate, example u: in fu: d (food). Then, there are vowels intermediate

between front and back, we can called them central vowels. Example in

b:d (Bird).

Vowels quality is also largely depend on the position of the lips.

The lips may be held in a natural or natural position; they may be spread

out so as to leave a long narrow opening between them, or they may be

drawn together so that the opening between them more or less round.

Vowels produced with the lips in the letter position are called rounded

vowelsexample u:other are called Unrounded, example i; there are two

main type of rounding , called close lip- rounding and open lip rounding.
19

There are also intermediate degrees. If the spreading of the lips is very

marked, the vowels may be termed spread, lip spreading and natural

speeding.

Nasalized vowels are heard in the speech of those who have nasal

pronunciation. They are common variation form of English and notably in

London dialectical speech and American English.

3. Diphthong

When a sound is made by gliding from one vowel position to

another, it is called Diphthong (Daniel jones, 2000:22). Diphthong are

represented phonetically by sequences of two letter, the first is showing the

starting point and the second indicating the direction of movement closing

diphthong are ei,ou,ai,au and icatring diphthong , e,, ..

http://wikidiff.com/dipthong/monopthong

4. Monophthong

Monophthong is a vowels, the word of monophthong come from

the old greek language mono is mean one or single and phthong maens

sound, so monophthong is is mean show that vowels is spoken with

exactly one sound and one mounth position.

Monophthong have two kind, short monophthong and shot

monophthong, Long Monophthong is a long vowels.

1. Monophthong

Short Monophthong is a short vowels, in some vowels the position

of the tongue is relatively stable during articulation, in the other vowels

though, the position that the tongue occupies at the beginning of the

vowels differs significantly from what it occupies at the end of vowels, i,e.
21

2. Monophthong

5. Phonetics Symbol Based on IPA

Phonetic is the science that addresses how a sound or voice in

shape, if phonetic itself shows how the sound of the movement of the

tongue, teeth, lips, paring and lungs. So , phonetic is the science that shows

how the human body sounds.

In 1886, a group of French and English language teacher led by the

French linguist Paul Passy, formed what come to be known from 1897

onwards as the international phonetic association. They are based on the

original alphabet spelling reform for English known as the romic alphabet,

but in other languages, value, symbols were allowed to vary from language

to language.

E. Definition of Error Analysis

Error mean not in target and error is human beings, when doing
24

something error it mean not on target . Then can learn of error s by repeat

until on target. According to brown (2007 : 257)error is performance error

that is either is a random a slip tongue, in that it is failure utilized a known

system correctly. Based on browns statement above error can happen to

anybody, anywhere and anytime native or second language situation by a slip

a slip tongue.

Error analysis is means that focuses to analyzing error and what the error

caused, analyzing error not only to find out the error Couse but also to find

out the way to avoid the errors in order can distinguish the true and false way.

According to selingker (2008 : 102) stated that error analysis is a type of

linguistic analysis that focuses of the errors learners.

F. Paradigms
