E-FOLIO ASSIGNMENT 2
eFolio - Essential IX
The American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) has developed nine essentials
of baccalaureate education for professional nursing practice. The essential that applied directly to
this course was Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology. As nurses
we use technology such as computer, phones, and monitors everyday to assess, record, and
gather pertinent patient information. With is data and technology we are able to critical think and
employ the proper nursing interventions. According to the AACN Knowledge and skills in
information and patient care technology are critical in preparing baccalaureate nursing graduates
to deliver quality patient care in a variety of healthcare settings (AACN, 2008, p. 18)

Information Management and Application of Patient Care Technology. This assignment allowed
me to complete an inclusive holistic assessment so I could identify the patient history and how it
impacts their current health status. I was able to employ my assessment skills to evaluate the
patient physical, emotional, cultural, nutritional, spiritual, and social needs. Gathering this
information about the patient allows the nurse to connect and have a better understanding about
how to care for that particular patient. This assignment offered guidance on how to reform and

completed the Comprehensive Health Assessment assignment. The assignments taught me how
effectively gather pertinent patient data so I could use evidence based practice to both care and
educate the patient. For example my patient chief complaint was shortness of breath. After
discussing her past medical and social history I was able to educate her about some possible
causes for the shortness of breath. Given her history of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,
obesity, and smoking she is high risk for developing shortness of breath. I was able to educate
her about smoking cessation and resources to help with her diet and pulmonary rehab.
