Introducing Teach and Tell

Dear Parents and Guardians,

In the past, your child may have participated in Show and Tell. In third grade, I like to
do things a little differently.

On Wednesday, October 4, we will begin Teach and Tell. Teach and Tell is an
opportunity for your child to teach the class something new. It may be the rules and
history of a favorite game or sport. It could be a few words from another language. Your
child may want to share a talent with the class, such as singing and teach them the words
to a song. Perhaps drawing is a favorite activity. Can your child teach a short drawing
lesson with the class? How about teaching us something about your native culture?

Whatever the topic of the Teach and Tell is, the main criteria are that we learn something
new about your child and about the world in which we live. Researching the topics
history, etc., is a requirement. A scoring rubric for the presentation is attached.

Presentations will be timed. I will give each presenter 15 minutes to present and answer
questions from the audience. Please practice the presentation, so it can be completed in
the allotted time, including set up and tear down (if applicable).

Participation in Teach and Tell is mandatory and a part of your childs language arts
grade for the following standards:

Organization and Delivery of Oral Communication:

1.5. organize ideas chronologically or around major points of information

1.6. provide a beginning, middle, and end, including concrete details that develop
a central idea
1.7. use clear and specific vocabulary to communicate ideas and establish tone
1.8. clarify and enhance oral presentations through use of appropriate props
(e.g., objects, pictures, charts)

Please encourage your child to choose a very familiar topic. This will help ease nerves
and make Teach and Tell a fun and informative event.
