y, por otra, para contrarrestar las demandas de autenticidad
de los indgenas y, an de manera ms radical, las demandas
de tierras y de soberana poltica.
El segundo punto que tiene que ser considerado est relacio-
nado con el lenguaje del discurso poscolonial, que es el lenguaje
del postestructuralismo del primer mundo, tal como los crticos
poscoloniales lo han aceptado ya, aunque no se detengan mucho
tiempo en sus implicaciones. La afirmacin de Prakash (que
cit ms arriba) de que todas las voces del Tercer mundo
identificadas en este ensayo hablan tanto dentro de discursos
que le son familiares a occidente como en dilogo con ellos
reconoce este problema pero oculta sus implicaciones en su
conclusin. Todo lo que esto prueba es que el mantenimiento
y la supervisin de las fronteras entre el este y el oeste nunca
ha podido detener los flujos que cruzan y se estrellan contra
esos lmites, como si los flujos que van en las dos direcciones
hubieran tenido la misma potencia. Esto es importante no slo
por las desigualdades disfrazadas de aseveraciones que circulan
alrededor de flujos, hibridez, etc. Creo que, an ms importante,
nos permite fijar temporalmente una poscolonialidad que de
otra manera puede extenderse a todo lo largo de la historia del
colonialismo. Aqu, una vez ms, puede ser aleccionadora una
comparacin con la China, esta vez sobre el tema del marxismo.
Los crticos poscoloniales insisten en que ellos son marxistas,
pero marxistas que rechazan la herencia del siglo XIX del
marxismo, con sus pretensiones universalistas que ignoraban
las diferencias histricas.35 Este es un problema que los revo-
lucionarios marxistas chinos enfrentaron y abordaron en la
dcada de 1930: cmo articular el marxismo a las condiciones
chinas (y viceversa). Su respuesta fue que el marxismo tiene
que traducirse al chino vernacular, no slo en el sentido de lo
nacional sino, especialmente, en un sentido local: a la lengua
del campesinado. El resultado fue lo que se llama comnmente
la sinoficacin del marxismo, plasmada en el tambin llamado
Pensamiento Mao.36 En la aproximacin de los crticos posco-
loniales a un problema similar, la traduccin adquiere la forma
no de traduccin a una lengua vernacular nacional (que se
rechaza) o local (que se afirma), sino que toma la forma de una
parfrasis del marxismo en la lengua del postestructuralismo,
en el que se deconstruye el marxismo y se le descentra, etc.
