INTRODUCTION

Wind turbines are devices that capture the kinetic energy of the wind and transform it into
electricity. They have been key machines in generating renewable energy, a sustainable practice
that has the potential in the future to reduce or eliminate the dependence on fossil fuels to
produce electricity. Wind turbines provide enough electricity to meet the needs of the countrys
electricity demand.

Land-based wind turbines have been developed and used to generate clean energy for several
decades. Compared with onshore wind turbines, offshore wind energy presents several
advantages such as higher wind speeds, lower turbulence intensity, decreased visual and noise
effects for humans and the possibility to transport larger turbines. Because of this, the
development of onshore wind has experienced a marked increase in the last two decades.

Offshore wind farm installations have been considerably grown in size and number over the last
decade and an even further world-wide increase is expected on a medium-term scale for the
future. For example, the Danish Energy Strategy calls for a substantial increase in renewable
energy in order to achieve complete independence of fossil fuels by 2050.

The main challenge for future offshore wind farm installations is to drive down the cost of energy.
The importance of cost optimized offshore wind turbine foundations is therefore strongly related
to the economic viability and further development of offshore wind energy. Furthermore, it is of
course very important as well to ensure safety and reliability in the designs of offshore wind
farms.

The trend towards larger water depths and turbine sizes in combinations with large variations of
site-specific soil conditions impose further challenges to the design, fabrication and installation
of foundations. These challenges are addressed by different types of foundation concepts to
maintain economic feasibility of the offshore wind turbines.

The turbines, although based on onshore designs, need to be designed with additional protection
against corrosion and the harsh marine environment. The foundation holds the whole assembly
together, maintains its stability, and prevents it from collapsing and overturning. It must be able
to resist all the different loads imposed on it. It transmits different types of loads exerted by the
wind turbine to the ground, provides stability to the structure, controls settlements, and prevents
overturning.
Objective & Need of Study
Along the years, the market of offshore wind farms has been growing with new engineering
challenges. Nowadays, with the expansion of the offshore wind projects and the modern offshore
wind turbines that offer competitive production prices, the global costs of offshore wind energy
can be reduced. Therefore, is possible to reach this goal by optimizing and identifying the critical
design parameters.

Support structure for offshore wind turbines are highly dynamic, having to cope with combined
wind and hydrodynamic loading and complex dynamic behavior from the wind turbine because
of irregular wave loads. It is vital to capture the integrated effect of the wind and wave loads and
the wind turbine control system, as this is a situation where the total loading is likely to be
significantly less than the sum of the constituent loads. This is because loads are not coincident,
and because the aerodynamic damping provided by the rotor significantly damps the motions
due to wave loading.

Structure to support wind turbines come in various shapes and sizes such as,

o Mono-pile have been chosen for most of the installed offshore wind farms to date.
o Concrete gravity base structures have been used on several projects.
o As wind turbines get larger, and are located in deeper water, jacket structure are
expected to become more suitable.

Study support structure for offshore wind turbine is necessary for proper selection of suitable
supportive system for various wind turbine according to surrounding environment conditions and
loads acting on it.
ABSTRACT
Wind power, especially offshore, is considered one of the most promising sources of clean
energy. Deployment of wind turbines in constantly increasing water depths has raised the issue
of the appropriate selection of the most suitable support structures options. This report presents
a methodology for the systematic assessment of the selection of the most preferable, among the
different support structures for offshore wind turbines, taking into consideration several
attributes through the widely used multi-criteria for appropriate selection of appropriate
offshore windmill supportive structure.

Supportive structure of offshore wind turbines is highly dynamic, having to cope with combined
wind and hydrodynamic loading and complex dynamic behavior from the wind turbine. It is vital
to capture the integrated effect of the wind and wave loads and the wind turbine control system,
as this is a situation where the total loading is likely to be significantly less than the sum of the
constituent loads.

Computer-aided approaches can significantly help in finding better and more economic solutions.
The main focus of this project work is on the analysis of various fixed bottom offshore wind
turbine supportive system
